Abhishek Nayar reveals Rohit wanted him to work with KL Rahul to bring best out of him

India Gazette12 hours ago

New Delhi [India], June 28 (ANI): Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar revealed that ODI captain Rohit Sharma wanted him to work with KL Rahul and bring out a more 'aggressive' outlook as well as the best out of him.
Rahul has flummoxed everyone with his technical prowess and impressive artillery. The most recent reminder that Rahul delivered was in the second innings of the opening Test against England at Headingley. Rahul dazzled on the crease with a composed 137 from 247 deliveries, a knock that was a sight for sore eyes.
Nayar, who was named in head coach Gautam Gambhir's initial regime, reminisced about the time when former Test captain Rohit asked him to work with Rahul, as the 'Hitman' had a strong belief in the 33-year-old's capability to play a significant role in India.
'When I first picked up that role, I remember I had a conversation with Rohit, and he said that one of the things he was really keen on me doing was working with KL and bringing out a more aggressive outlook to how KL played the game, and bringing the best out of him. Because he believed strongly that KL would play a major role in the Champions Trophy, World Cup and everything going forward, including the BGT [Border-Gavaskar Trophy] and the Tests in England,' Nayar, who was removed from the position after a BCCI review following the 3-1 series loss in Australia, told ESPNcricinfo.
Before the BGT series, India squared off against New Zealand in a three-match Test series on home soil. In the series opener, Rahul got out while tickling the delivery that went towards the leg side. In the second, he got out on a peach of a delivery and then witnessed Rishabh Pant and Sarfaraz Khan boss the Kiwis with their flamboyant approach. Eventually, India collapsed and lost the opening Test. Rahul didn't play in the next two Tests as India fell to a historic 3-0 series whitewash.
'I think that was sort of the inception [of our relationship]. Australia was going to be critical for him because it was almost like, what if you didn't get runs there, then where is his career going? Because he was out of the T20 [squad]. Then this could also very well have been his last series,' Nayar said.
'I told him, listen, we've got 15 days to prepare before we go to Australia, and take those ten days there, we have got almost month to prepare - what do you want to do? How do you want to approach this? What is your mindset?' he continued.
'He spoke about what he's been doing and what worked for him in the past. And then I had a certain thought process, which was very different from his. Over hours and hours of conversation and trying to make him understand where I came from, eventually, I got him to a place where he sort of trusted me to do certain things with him in regards to how he practises, in regards to trusting certain changes in his tactics, in regards to his stance, where he stands in the crease, what guard he takes,' Nayar added.
Nayar didn't give out the secret sauce and the tweaks he made that allowed Rahul to thrive but gave a sneak peek into the approach that he adopted and said, 'All I can tell you is, the way I've always tried to handle things is to first try and address the skill, and then use skill as a medium to address the mind. That's as much as I can tell you in terms of details.'
'It's about using practice to give his mind reassurance with the plan that we have, and what he needs to do to execute it. And then adding a lot of tactical nuances to that so that it gives him a slight edge when he's batting. So his focus is totally on following and executing those tactical adjustments and nuances rather than focusing on the result of it,' Nayar added. (ANI)

Jaiswal receives ex-India fielding coach's backing despite dropped catches at Headingley: 'He's had just two bad games'

Yashasvi Jaiswal has come under a barrage of criticism after spilling as many as four catches in the first Test against England at Headingley, especially poor fielding along with batting collapses and some ordinary bowling resulted in a five-wicket defeat for India. read more Yashasvi Jaiswal drops a catch at deep square leg off Mohammed Siraj's bowling to give Ben Duckett a lifeline on 98 on Day 5 of the first Test against England in Leeds. Reuters Former India fielding coach R Sridhar has come to Yashasvi Jaiswal's defence with the young opener facing a barrage of criticism for his poor fielding in the first Test against England in Leeds. Opening batter Jaiswal began his maiden tour of England with a bang, bringing up a century along with captain Shubman Gill on the very first day to help the visitors reach a dominant 359/3 at stumps. Things, however, started going downhill for Jaiswal from thereon at Headingley, with the 23-year-old not only getting dismissed early in the second innings but also dropping as many as four catches in the next four days. That included a lifeline to Ben Duckett off Mohammed Siraj's bowling at a crucial stage of England's chase of the 371-run target . STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Poor fielding ended up costing Team India the series opener along with batting collapses and some ordinary bowling from those other than star pacer Jasprit Bumrah as England went 1-0 up in the five-match series with a five-wicket victory. Sridhar comes to Jaiswal's defence after Headingley loss However, Sridhar, who was the fielding coach of the Indian team from 2014 to 2021, came to Jaiswal's defence by stating that the tough weather conditions in Leeds made it difficult for him to hold on to catches. 'He's actually an excellent gully fielder. Make no mistake. He's had just two bad games - one in Melbourne, one here in Leeds. Otherwise, he's been exceptional. The catches he took against Bangladesh in Kanpur were outstanding. It's easy to sit in the commentary box and criticise, but these are challenging conditions, and for many of them, it's their first experience of this environment,' Sridhar told Sportstar. While the spotlight was firmly on Jaiswal as far as fielding at Headingley was concerned, he wasn't the only one putting down chances, with a gun fielder like Ravindra Jadeja spilling a catch at backward point on Day 2 and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant missing an opportunity later in the game. The Englishmen were also guilty of putting down chances, with Duckett and Harry Brook dropping Sai Sudharsan and centurion KL Rahul respectively during India's second innings. Sridhar, however, wasn't happy with India's ground fielding at Headingley, which he feels is something that is in a player's control unlike catching. 'The standard of ground fielding which is exhibited is not acceptable. Unlike catching, ground fielding is something which is totally in your control. You should know which ball to put your body behind, which ball to attack, which ball to play safe,' Sridhar added. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The second Test between India and England gets underway on 2 July at Edgbaston, Birmingham, where the Shubman Gill-led side will be eyeing a series-leveling win.

Paul Pogba Is Back! Signs Two-Year Deal With Ligue 1's AS Monaco

Last Updated: Paul Pogba has signed a two-year contract with Monaco, returning to football after nearly two years away due to injuries, a doping ban, and an extortion case. Paul Pogba has signed a two-year contract with Ligue 1 club Monaco, marking his return to football after nearly two years away, the club announced on Saturday. The Ligue 1 side took to social media to announce the signing of Pogba. The 2018 World Cup winner has only made 12 appearances over the past three seasons due to injuries, an 18-month doping ban, and an extortion case in which he was the victim. Pogba failed a drugs test in August 2023 following a match for Juventus and has been eligible to return to football since March, although his contract with the Italian club was terminated last year. In February 2024, Pogba received a four-year doping ban after testing positive for DHEA, which increases testosterone levels. The suspension was reduced to 18 months after a successful appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Juventus announced in November that they had mutually agreed to terminate his contract, which was originally set to expire in June 2026. The midfielder will now play club football in Ligue 1 for the first time in his professional career. 'I am determined to get back on the pitch, mentally ready, physically ready, it's just a matter of time," the 32-year-old told French television last weekend. Pogba started in the Le Havre youth team before joining Manchester United in 2009. He made only a few first-team appearances for the three-time European champions before signing with Juventus in 2012. Pogba won four consecutive Serie A titles in Turin before rejoining Manchester United for a then-world record 105 million euros ($123 million). He returned to Juventus three years ago but struggled with various injuries. In 2024, his brother Mathias was sentenced to three years in prison, with two years suspended, for his role in an attempt to extort 13 million euros from Pogba in 2022. Pogba has scored 11 goals in 91 appearances for the France national team, playing a key role and scoring in their World Cup final victory over Croatia seven years ago. He last played for France in 2022 but missed the World Cup in Qatar due to knee surgery. His new club Monaco, will participate in the Champions League next season after finishing third behind Ligue 1 champions Paris St Germain and Olympique de Marseille last season.
