'Display Licenses': Supreme Court Directs Hotels Along Kanwar Yatra Route
The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed all hotel owners along the Kanwar Yatra route in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand to display their licences and registration certificates in accordance with statutory requirements.
A bench of Justices M M Sundresh and N Kotiswar Singh said it was not going into the other issues of displaying the name of the hotel or dhaba owner and the QR code as Tuesday is the last day of the Kanwar Yatra.
"We are told that today is the last day of the yatra. In any case it is likely to come to an end in the near future. Therefore, at this stage we would only pass an order that all the respective hotel owners shall comply with the mandate of displaying the licence and the registration certificate as per the statutory requirements," the bench said.
The top court was hearing a plea filed by academician Apoorvanand Jha and others.
Last year, the Supreme Court stayed similar directives issued by Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh governments, asking eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display the names of their owners, staff and other details.
Referring to a press release issued by the Uttar Pradesh government on June 25, Jha, said, "The new measures mandate the display of QR codes on all eateries along the kanwar route which reveal the names and identities of the owners, thereby achieving the same discriminatory profiling that was previously stayed by this court." The petition said the state government's directive asking stall owners to reveal religious and caste identities under "lawful license requirements" breaches the right to privacy of the shop, dhaba and restaurant owners.
A large number of devotees travel from various places with 'kanwars' carrying holy water from the Ganga to perform 'jalabhishek' of Shivling during the Hindu calendar month of 'Shravan'.
Many believers shun the consumption of meat during the month. Many do not even consume meals containing onion and garlic.

Forum seeks court-monitored probe into Dharmasthala ‘mass burials'
A group of social activists has set up an organisation named 'Forum for Justice to Women in Kozhikode' against the backdrop of the alleged 'murders and mass burials' at Dharmasthala in Belthangady taluk of coastal Karnataka. They have sought an investigation into the allegations monitored either by the Supreme Court or the High Court of Karnataka. V.P. Zuhra and C.V. Kumaran, functionaries of the Forum, told the media on Wednesday that the Kerala government should take interest in the issue in view of the claims that even Malayali women were among those allegedly murdered there. The issue came to the limelight recently after a former sanitation worker, associated with the Manjunatha Swamy Temple in Dharmasthala between 1995 and 2014, claimed that he had buried a large number of bodies, including those of many women and minors who had been raped and murdered. The Karnataka government subsequently formed a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the allegations, and the inquiry is on. Ms. Zuhra and Mr. Kumaran, however, said that the investigation should be monitored by the court as there was a possibility of the political executive in Karnataka exerting its influence on the SIT. The crimes had reportedly been committed on the premises of a temple whose administration was closely linked with those in power at the Centre, they pointed out. Ms. Zuhra and Mr. Kumaran said that the authorities should ensure the safety of the whistle-blower, who raised the allegations. Statements of all the people associated with the temple should be recorded. The possibility of a joint probe involving the Kerala Police should be explored to see if women from Kerala too were among those reportedly buried. They also said that the Union and State governments should announce compensation for the relatives of the victims. A convention would be held in Kozhikode on August 15 to highlight the issue, where human rights activists from Karnataka would participate. The forum has sent memorandums raising their demands to the government, National Human Rights Commission, and the National Commission for Women.

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to contest general election, says party leader
Khaleda Zia, the chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and former premier, will contest the upcoming general election, her party leader said on Wednesday. BNP Vice Chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo said the 79-year-old party chief is doing well and she will contest the election, the Daily Star newspaper reported. 'She will be elected from Feni because she is now in good health,' Mintoo told reporters after a views-exchange meeting organised by the Feni district administration. On his discussions with Zia's son and acting BNP chairman Tarique Rahman, who is in London, Mintoo said that they believe the election will be held in the first week of February. 'I think, considering the current situation of the country, the election may be held even before February. Because there is a pending case in the Supreme Court regarding the caretaker government. If a caretaker government is introduced, the election must be held within 90 days,' he was quoted as saying by the paper. Zia returned to Dhaka from London in May after four months of medical treatment. She went to London in January for advanced medical care and was admitted to The London Clinic. Zia has long suffered from liver cirrhosis, kidney disease, heart problems, diabetes, and arthritis. The BNP chairperson was lodged in the Old Dhaka Central Jail on February 8, 2018, after the Dhaka court sentenced her in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case. During the COVID-19 outbreak, the then Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government temporarily released Zia from jail after 776 days through an executive order, suspending her sentence on March 25, 2020, with conditions that she would stay in her house and not leave the country. On August 6 last year, after the ouster of the Hasina regime, Zia was freed by an order of President Mohammed Shahabuddin. In March, Bangladesh's Supreme Court upheld a High Court ruling that acquitted Zia in a corruption case in which she was sentenced to seven years in jail by a lower court. Zia now stands acquitted in both the Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust cases, in which she had previously been convicted and sentenced. She served as the prime minister of Bangladesh from March 1991 to March 1996, and again from June 2001 to October 2006.

'Priyanka, Don't Control Me': Jaya Bachchan Snaps At Shiv Sena MP During Op Sindoor Debate
Jaya Bachchan sparked a row by questioning the name of Operation Sindoor. As she responded angrily to other MPs, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi tried to calm her down. Samajwadi Party MP and actor Jaya Bachchan sparked a row in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday when she questioned the name of Operation Sindoor and said the 'sindoor" of several women was 'wiped off" during the Pahalgam terror attack, drawing a sharp response from the BJP. Speaking in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, Bachchan started by paying her condolences to the families of the people who were killed in the Pahalgam attack on April 22. 'It looks like fiction to me… the way they (terrorists) came and killed so many people, and no action was taken. It was unreal," she added. 'I must congratulate you (the ruling party) on appointing such writers who give such grand names. Why did you name it 'Sindoor'? The sindoor has been wiped off the foreheads of women whose husbands were killed," she further said, sparking strong reactions from other leaders in the House. Jaya Bachchan was visibly irked as BJP MPs in the Rajya Sabha started interrupting her speech. BJP MP Surendra Singh Nagar, who was presiding over the House, said, 'Jaya ji, you address the Chair. Whatever you say will go on record." 'Either you speak or I will speak. I will not allow this. When you speak, I never interrupt. When a woman speaks, I never interrupt. So please, mind your tongue," said Bachchan. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, who was sitting beside Bachchan, attempted to calm her down. However, this attempt backfired as the veteran actor snapped back by saying, 'Priyanka, don't control me." Chaturvedi responded with an embarrassed laugh. The Samajwadi Party MP also lashed out at the government for an intelligence failure and for not keeping people safe. 'You have destroyed the faith and trust of the people you made promises to," she said in the Rajya Sabha Bachchan's remarks on Operation Sindoor's name have now drawn the BJP's ire. 'Just see their mindset. Jaya Bachchan ji, the terrorists destroyed sindoor, but sindoor is not just for embellishment; it is also a symbol of strength and capability," BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla was quoted as saying by NDTV. 'The name Operation Sindoor was chosen to send a message: you wipe off sindoor, we will destroy you. This was achieved," he added. Operation Sindoor, a reference to the vermilion used by Hindu women as a display of the sanctity of their marriage, was chosen as the name of the operation as a symbol of the women who lost their husbands at the hands of terrorists in cold blood.
