JuJu Watkins' injury sent USC's championship odds diving and gave UConn a massive boost
Breaking: USC phenom JuJu Watkins has suffered a torn ACL in her right knee, sources tell ESPN. She will undergo surgery. pic.twitter.com/2qMvpXTGwI — Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) March 25, 2025
Even as the No. 1 seed in their region of the 2025 women's March Madness bracket, the USC Trojans weren't viewed as the favorites to make it to the Final Four. That distinction belonged to the 2-seed UConn Huskies, whose +275 national title odds entering the tournament only trailed South Carolina (+270) as the overall favorite at BetMGM. With Wooden Award favorite JuJu Watkins leading the way, though, USC was going to be a huge obstacle for UConn to hurdle -- a tough out for any team in the tournament.
On Monday, that hurdle just got a lot shorter.
Watkins left USC's second-round win over Mississippi State with a knee injury that's being reported as torn ACL by ESPN's Shams Charania. Her tournament run is over. Oddsmakers think USC's will end soon too.
At BetMGM, USC plummeted from +550 national title odds entering the tournament (+700 entering the second round) to +2500 ahead of their Sweet 16 game against 5-seed Kansas State on Saturday.
UConn, meanwhile, improved from +225 to +175 over the last round, leapfrogging South Carolina (+200) as the championship favorite. UCLA (+650), Texas (+750) and Notre Dame (+1000) make up the next three, distant favorites. USC's odds rank as sixth-best among the remaining 16 teams. The odds imply that even if USC gets past Kansas State (+8000) as expected, the team's run will end with UConn in the Elite Eight.
'Many of the top seeds have advanced, which will set us up for great matchups later in the women's NCAA Tournament," BetMGM trader Hannah Luther said in an email. "UConn has an easier path to the Final Four following JuJu Watkins' injury and are now the favorites. South Carolina, UCLA and Texas are contenders drawing strong interest from bettors.'

Suns grab Florida basketball star Walter Clayton Jr. in latest CBS Sports mock draft

Suns grab Florida basketball star Walter Clayton Jr. in latest CBS Sports mock draft Former Florida basketball guard Walter Clayton Jr. is projected to be drafted by the Phoenix Suns with the 29th overall pick in CBS Sports' latest NBA mock draft. Clayton is coming off one of the most decorated seasons in program history. The 6-foot-2-inch guard set a single-season school record with 713 points, captured Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors and shot 38.6% from three-point range while leading Florida to a national championship. CBS Sports' Gary Parrish praised Clayton's "unique shot-making profile," noting that the former Iona transfer averaged 22.3 points and hit 43.5 percent from beyond the arc over six NCAA Tournament games. Phoenix could view Clayton as a potential instant-offense option off the bench, thanks to his deep range and proven clutch gene. His winning polished game and winning pedigree also make him an attractive selection during the late first-round window. Here is everything Parrish said about Clayton and why he thinks the Suns will draft him in the 2025 NBA draft. What CBS Sports said about Clayton "Clayton was the star of Florida's national title run while averaging 22.3 points on 43.5% shooting from beyond the arc in those six NCAA Tournament games. There are concerns about his decision-making and approach to defense, but the Most Outstanding Player of the 2025 Final Four is such a skilled and unique shotmaker that he's worthy of a serious look this deep in the first round by a Phoenix franchise that probably needs to hit the reset button." Ranking every SEC basketball stadium by seating capacity

Ranking every SEC basketball stadium by seating capacity The Georgia Bulldogs are not known for having the best basketball program in the SEC, but the Dawgs were part of the best conference in men's basketball during the 2024-2025 season when a record-breaking 14 (of 16) SEC teams made March Madness. The Florida Gators ended up as the national champions to cap the SEC's elite season. That means 87.5% of SEC basketball fan bases had a team that made the 2024-2025 NCAA Tournament. The Georgia Bulldogs were one of those teams to make March Madness. They went 20-13 in the 2024-25 season, good enough to earn a No. 9 seed in March Madness. The Bulldogs can welcome up to 10,253 fans in Stegeman Coliseum and in 2024-2025 those fans were treated to a Georgia team that reached new heights not seen in years. Stegeman Coliseum ranks just 13th in maximum seat capacity among all SEC basketball stadiums. Despite that, Georgia was still able to beat Kentucky and Florida in Stegeman Coliseum in 2024-2025, showing that UGA still has a strong home-court advantage.
