White House launches official TikTok account
Trump has a soft spot for the popular app, crediting it with helping him gain support among young voters when he defeated Democrat Kamala Harris in the November 2024 presidential election.
Lawmakers in Washington worry, however, that its US user data could fall into the hands of China's government. Trump has been working on a deal for US investors to buy the app from TikTok's Chinese parent, ByteDance.
Past intelligence assessments have said the app's owners are beholden to the Chinese government and that it could be used to influence Americans.
The new account, @whitehouse, went live on Tuesday evening with an initial video showing footage of Trump as he declares: "I am your voice." "America we are BACK! What's up TikTok?" the caption read.
The TikTok account Trump used for his presidential campaign last year, @realdonaldtrump, has more than 15 million followers.
The Republican president also relies heavily on his Truth Social account to deliver his message and posts occasionally on his X account.
"The Trump administration is committed to communicating the historic successes President Trump has delivered to the American people with as many audiences and platforms as possible," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
"President Trump's message dominated TikTok during his presidential campaign, and we're excited to build upon those successes and communicate in a way no other administration has before," she said.
A 2024 law required TikTok to stop operating by Jan. 19 of this year unless ByteDance had completed divesting the app's US assets or demonstrated significant progress toward a sale.
Trump opted not to enforce the law after he began his second term as president on Jan. 20. He first extended the deadline to early April, then to June 19 and then again to Sept. 17.
Extensions to the deadline have drawn criticism from some lawmakers, who argue the Trump administration is flouting the law and ignoring national security concerns related to Chinese control over TikTok.

Israel says it has taken first steps of military operation in Gaza City
TEL AVIV/JERUSALEM/CAIRO (Reuters) -- Israel's military announced the first steps of an operation to take over Gaza City on Wednesday and called up tens of thousands of reservists while the government considered a new ceasefire proposal to pause nearly two years of war. "We have begun the preliminary operations and the first stages of the attack on Gaza City, and already now IDF forces are holding the outskirts of Gaza City," Brigadier Gen. Effie Defrin, Israel's military spokesperson, told reporters. A military official briefing reporters earlier on Wednesday said reserve soldiers would not report for duty until September, an interval that gives mediators some time to bridge gaps between Hamas and Israel over truce terms. But after Israeli troops clashed with Hamas fighters in the Palestinian enclave on Wednesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said the Israeli leader sped up the timeline for taking control of Hamas strongholds and defeating the militant group that triggered the conflict with an attack on Israel in October 2023. The Israeli statements signaled Israel was pressing ahead with its plan to seize Gaza's biggest urban center despite international criticism of an operation likely to force the displacement of many more Palestinians. Defrin said troops were already operating on the outskirts of Gaza City, and Hamas was now a "battered and bruised" guerrilla force. "We will deepen the attack on Hamas in Gaza City, a stronghold of governmental and military terror for the terrorist organization," the spokesman said. Israel's military called up tens of thousands of reservists on Wednesday in preparation for the expected assault on Gaza City, as the Israeli government considered a new truce proposal. Hamas, in a statement on Telegram, accused Netanyahu of obstructing the ceasefire deal in favor of continuing a "brutal war against innocent civilians in Gaza City." "Netanyahu's disregard for the mediators' proposal ... proves that he is the real obstructionist of any agreement." Israel's security cabinet, chaired by Netanyahu, approved a plan this month to expand the campaign in Gaza with the aim of taking Gaza City, where Israeli forces waged fierce urban warfare with Hamas in the early stages of the war. Israel currently holds about 75 percent of the Gaza Strip. Many of Israel's closest allies have urged the government to reconsider, but Netanyahu is under pressure from some far-right members of his coalition to reject a temporary ceasefire, continue the war and pursue the annexation of the territory. One far-right member, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, announced final approval on Wednesday of a widely condemned Israeli plan for a settlement project in the occupied West Bank that he said would erase any prospect of a Palestinian state. The war in Gaza began on Oct. 7, 2023, when gunmen led by Hamas attacked southern Israeli communities near the border, killing some 1,200 people, mainly civilians, and taking 251 hostages including children into Gaza, according to Israeli figures. Over 62,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's air and ground war in Gaza since then, according to Gaza health officials, who do not say how many were militants but have said most of those killed have been women and children. Hamas has accepted a proposal put forward by Arab mediators for a 60-day ceasefire that would involve releasing some of the remaining hostages and freeing Palestinian prisoners in Israel. The Israeli government, which has said all the 50 remaining hostages must be released at once, is studying the proposal. Israeli authorities believe that 20 hostages are still alive. Many Gazans and foreign leaders fear a storming of Gaza City would cause significant casualties. Israel says it will help civilians leave battle zones before any assault begins. Israeli troops clashed on Wednesday with more than 15 Hamas militants who emerged from tunnel shafts and attacked with gunfire and anti-tank missiles near Khan Younis, south of Gaza City, severely wounding one soldier and lightly wounding two others, an Israeli military official said. In a statement, Hamas' Al-Qassam Brigades confirmed carrying out a raid on Israeli troops southeast of Khan Younis and engaging Israeli troops at point-blank range. It said one fighter blew himself up among the soldiers, causing casualties, during an attack that lasted several hours. Israel's military campaign has caused widespread devastation across the Gaza Strip, which before the war was home to about 2.3 million Palestinians. Many buildings including homes, schools and mosques have been destroyed, while the military has accused Hamas of operating from within civilian infrastructure, which Hamas denies. Israeli officials have said evacuation orders would be issued to Gaza City residents before any force moves in. The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, which oversees Gaza's only Catholic Church, located in Gaza City, said it received reports that neighborhoods near the small parish had started to receive evacuation notices. Hamas, an Islamist movement that has ruled Gaza for almost two decades, has been severely weakened by the war. Hamas has said it would release all remaining hostages in exchange for an end to war. Israel says it will not end the war before Hamas disarms. Opinion polls show strong Israeli public support for ending the war if it ensures the release of the hostages, and a rally in Tel Aviv urging the government to pursue such a deal drew a huge crowd on Saturday. A new Reuters/Ipsos poll of Americans showed a 58 percent majority believe that every country in the United Nations should recognise Palestine as a nation.

US senator says Congress to review shipbuilding reforms after Lee-Trump summit
A US senator said Wednesday that Congress will review what legislative reforms may be needed to facilitate shipbuilding cooperation with South Korea, based on the outcome of next week's summit between President Lee Jae Myung and US President Donald Trump. Sen. Andy Kim (D-NJ) made the remarks during a press availability in Seoul, days before Lee and Trump are set to hold their first summit in Washington on Monday (US time), following a recent tariff agreement between the two countries. "There might be some reforms that can make it more efficient, speed the process, and we'll look at that appropriately," Kim said when asked about US shipbuilding regulations prohibiting foreign involvement. "I cannot move forward until I have a sense of what comes out from the summit next week. So we'll see how that's structured and how the investment is laid out, and then we'll move with the appropriate level of urgency," he said. With the tariff deal, South Korea has proposed large-scale shipbuilding cooperation projects, dubbed "Make American Shipbuilding Great Again (MASGA)," to held restore the sluggish US shipbuilding industry, including building new shipyards in the United States and partnerships on maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) projects. However, concerns have been raised about how quickly the shipbuilding projects can move forward, as US laws, such as the Jones Act and the Byrnes-Tollefson Amendment, remain as a legal barrier restricting foreign operations in commercial shipping and military shipbuilding. "If there are proposals needed for reforms that make sense to both of our countries, I think it could move fast," Kim said. Kim also addressed the need for the US to be clear about its goals in shipbuilding cooperation with South Korea, such as the number and type of ships it needs to build, saying that any legislative support would start from there. As a New Jersey resident who lives about 15 minutes away from the Philly Shipyard, run by South Korea's Hanwha Ocean, Kim described South Korea as the "best partner" in boosting American shipbuilding capabilities. "We are supportive of President Trump's efforts to continue to increase shipbuilding capabilities, and we're prepared to provide whatever type of legislation as well as resources behind it to be able to make that successful," he said. Regarding the Trump administration's push for "modernizing the alliance," which potentially calls for reorienting the role of US troops in Korea to deter China, Kim said related bilateral discussions should take place in a way that ensures US commitment to deterring North Korean threats, as well as addressing shared regional challenges. "I want to make sure that ... in the Indo-Pacific, (we) are able to address the array of different challenges and threats that we face. We can do that in a way that still protects extended deterrence, protects our interests here on the Korean Peninsula," Kim said. "Any changes that we would see in significant ways to troop presence, we would want to make sure that Congress has a role in oversight," he added. Kim, the first Korean American elected to the Senate, visited South Korea this week with Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Il) for meetings with government officials and business leaders.
