Guardians ace Shane Bieber scratches 2nd rehab start due to soreness
NEW YORK (AP) — Guardians ace Shane Bieber had a setback in a bullpen session and will not make his second rehab start, Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt said Thursday.
Bieber underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in April 2024. He was scheduled to make a rehab start with Double-A Akron on Friday, but experienced soreness during a bullpen session on Tuesday.
'That's all we know right now, that he's not going to throw tomorrow,' Vogt said before Cleveland face the New York Yankees in the teams' series finale.
Bieber is scheduled to meet with team doctors and consult with specialist Dr. Keith Meister. Vogt said he would have a further update before Friday's game against Houston.
Bieber began his rehab Saturday by throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings in an Arizona Complex League game on his 30th birthday. The 2020 American League Cy Young Award winner faced nine batters, allowed one hit and struck out five.
Bieber pitched 12 scoreless innings in two starts last season, was limited to 21 starts in 2023 due to elbow issues and 16 starts in 2021 because of a shoulder strain. He agreed to a one-year, $14 million contract last fall with a $16 million player option for 2026.
Bieber is 62-32 with a 3.22 ERA in 136 appearances since debuting with the Guardians in 2018, when he was 11-5 with a 4.55 ERA.

Lambourn wins English Derby to give trainer Aidan O'Brien his 11th victory at the classic
EPSOM, England (AP) — Lambourn raced away from the pack to win the English Derby on Saturday, giving Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien his 11th win at the classic race. Lambourn set the pace early and then pulled away down the final stretch to win by about 3 1/2 lenghts. The 3-year-old colt, ridden by Wayne Lordan, entered the race at 13-2 after losing to 2-1 favorite Delacroix at Leopardstown in March. But Delacroix never looked like challenging this time and finished ninth. Lazy Griff (50-1) was second and Tennessee Stud came third. It was O'Brien's third consecutive win at the showpiece race. 'Wayne gave him him an incredible ride,' O'Brien said. 'Everybody knew what he was going to do, he's very straightforward, Wayne knew he'd stay so he went forward.' Lambourn was sired by 2014 Derby winner Australia, who in turn was sired by 2001 victor Galileo. 'It's incredible for everyone that we trained Australia to win the Derby and his sire as well, Galileo. I'm just a small part of it, everybody puts in so much, I can't tell you what a privelege it is,' O'Brien said. Cristiano Ronaldo is almost certain he won't play at the Club World Cup
MUNICH (AP) — Cristiano Ronaldo says he's almost certain he will not be playing at the Club World Cup, dealing a blow to FIFA president Gianni Infantino's hopes of having one of soccer's biggest attractions at the tournament. The Portugal star confirmed Saturday that he received 'quite a few' offers from participating clubs to play for them at the tournament starting June 14, but had decided against accepting any of them. 'Some things make sense to talk about, other things don't, and, as a person says, you can't take part in everything,' Ronaldo said. 'You have to think about the short, medium and long term. It's a decision practically made on my part not to go to the Club World Cup, but I've had quite a few invitations to go.' Ronaldo was speaking in Munich a day before Portugal's Nations League final against Spain. 'This is irrelevant right now,' Ronaldo said when first asked about the Club World Cup.
