Burton scores career-high 30, Valkyries hit franchise-record 15 3s in 88-83 win over Mystics
The expansion Valkyries set franchise records for 3-pointers (15) and 3-point percentage (46.7%).
Burton, who made 10 of 13 from the field, finished with seven rebounds and seven assists. Tiffany Hayes scored 14 points and Janelle Salaün added 11 for Golden State (17-15), which has won all three meetings with Washington.
Sonia Citron scored 13 points for the Mystics during a 29-9 fourth-quarter run that trimmed their deficit to 86-83. Citron converted a three-point play and hit a 3-pointer before she found Sug Sutton for a 3 that capped the spurt with 53.8 seconds to play.
Hayes made two free throws with 15.4 seconds left.
Sutton had 15 points and seven assists and Citron also finished with 15 points. Kiki Iriafen added 14 points and 10 rebounds — the rookie's 10th double-double this season. Emily Engstler hit three 3s and scored 13 points on 5-of-5 shooting, and Jade Melbourne scored 10 points.
Washington (14-18), which beat Dallas 91-78 behind a career-high 23 points by Iriafen on Sunday, has lost five of six.
Zandalasini hit a 3-pointer just over a minute into the game that made it 5-2 and the Valkyries led the rest of the way. Golden State made 9 of 11 from the field in the first quarter to take a 30-12 lead.

This week, with Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh edging closer to a 60-plus home run season, we look back at a vintage baseball card of a player who achieved the milestone. The 1961 Topps Baseball set contains 587 cards and features three different Roger Maris cards, with his #2 base card being the most notable among collectors. Maris ultimately beat out Mantle and broke the long-standing record with 61 dingers. During the same season, Maris captured his second consecutive American League MVP award and his first World Series title. It was the peak of his baseball stardom and the defining moment of his career. In 2001, Billy Crystal produced and directed an HBO movie titled '61*,' which chronicles the 1961 baseball season and the home run race between Maris and Mantle. Despite Maris still not yet enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame, his 1961 Topps #2 remains highly sought-after because of the season it represents. The fact that he broke the home run record while playing for an iconic team like the Yankees further adds to its enduring collectibility. Of the nearly 6,000 Roger Maris 1961 Topps #2 graded by PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator), only one has achieved a Gem-Mint PSA 10 grade and has no recorded sales. The most common grade is PSA 4 (1,125 copies), which typically sells on eBay for around $80, depending on its visual appeal. Near-Mint-to-Mint examples graded a PSA 8 typically command prices exceeding $1,000. The record sale for a PSA 9 came in 2021, when one sold at auction for $12,148, but the next two highest sales came earlier this year at exactly $10,370 each in auctions three months apart. The PSA 9 population is just 24. The card's popularity compared to other Roger Maris cards is reflected in the number of PSA graded examples (total population of 5,985). The only Maris card that's been graded more by PSA is his 1958 Topps rookie card (total population of 7,171), according to GemRate, which tracks graded card populations. Efton Chism, Drake Maye and other Patriots risers and fallers after preseason win
Even after a pair of intense joint practices in Minnesota with the Vikings, New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel still wanted to see his starters iron out some issues. So even though Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell told Vrabel on Saturday morning that Minnesota would hold out all of its starters — the Vikings sat more than 30 players in total — Vrabel had his starters play. Advertisement The result, a 20-12 win, wasn't as important as the individual performances in the second of three exhibition games. So with the preseason finale against the New York Giants up next on Thursday, and with roster cutdown day just 10 days away, here's a look at who helped and hurt his case in Saturday's victory. The undrafted rookie was so good that it's hard to pick his most impressive play from Saturday, even though he played less than half the game. Was it the strength shown in fighting for his 12-yard touchdown reception? Or his 33-yard catch and run? Or the impressive third-and-5 conversion he picked up after fighting through multiple would-be tacklers? Any hope of quietly sneaking him onto the practice squad is probably gone. Chism III caught all six targets and turned those catches into 71 yards and a touchdown. DeMario Douglas is still the team's starting slot receiver, but Chism looks like a more-than-capable backup who can step in if the Pats need him. His speed is lacking, but his strength with the ball in his hands is so impressive as he routinely breaks out of arm tackles. On the TV broadcast, Eliot Wolf, the Patriots' executive vice president of player personnel, said Chism's consistency has stood out from the beginning. He noted that Chism does 5 a.m. film studies with wide receivers coach Todd Downing and shouted out his ability to 'set up a defender at the top of his route.' With roster cutdown day approaching, Chism looks to be safely on the team. 'He's certainly made the most of his opportunities,' Vrabel said during his halftime interview on the TV broadcast. Advertisement With Rhamondre Stevenson already hurt, the Patriots didn't use Henderson a ton. But even in a limited role, he shone again. He might already be the Patriots' most reliable offensive player. The rookie running back has such an impressive mix of speed, toughness and pass-catching skills. He frequently turns nothing into something, including a third-and-10 conversion on one carry and his 8-yard touchdown on another. It's telling, too, that when the Patriots tried to hit him on a wheel route on an early third down, the Vikings defense (after facing the Pats for two straight practices) put a safety over the top of Henderson, which helped break up the play. Still, Henderson finished with four carries for 20 yards and a touchdown. Each week of camp, he seems to earn more and more touches. So far, it hasn't seemed like Jennings fits what the Patriots want to do defensively, even after recent years of thriving as an edge setter in Bill Belichick's scheme. That he was still playing in the fourth quarter of a preseason game doesn't speak highly of Jennings' standing on the depth chart or his chances of making the 53-man roster. But his performance Saturday might give coaches some pause and perhaps earn Jennings more playing time this week. Jenning had 2.5 sacks against the Vikings, and at one point, he was in on sacks on back-to-back plays. Oh, and pass rushing isn't even the strength of his game. Things have pointed toward Jennings getting cut, but maybe this jump-starts a late surge up the depth chart. 33 gets there! @anferneejenning | #NEPats 📺: WBZ — New England Patriots (@Patriots) August 16, 2025 His interception wasn't the most impressive part of his game, since Sam Howell threw one up for grabs, but it was a nice afternoon for Austin nonetheless. What was especially impressive was Austin's versatility. He started the game on the outside. Then, when Marcus Jones exited, Austin moved into the slot. At 6-foot-1, Austin is five inches taller than Jones and is playing well enough that perhaps the Pats would consider using him as their nickel corner when matched up against bigger receivers. Advertisement This isn't really cause for concern considering the small sample size and the (lack of) meaning of this game, but Maye didn't have his best stuff Saturday. He missed high on a pair of throws, one of which landed right in the hands of a Vikings defender (though it was dropped), and at one point didn't get the offense in position quickly enough, resulting in a delay-of-game penalty. Maye finished 4-of-7 for 46 yards against the Vikings' second- and third-string defenders. It's not anything to worry about in the big picture, but it wasn't a great day for the 22-year-old. With Chism showing coaches why they shouldn't leave him off this roster, Baker didn't take advantage of the opportunity the same way. On Saturday, Baker was … fine. He made some mistakes, including a false start in the red zone, and couldn't come down with the catch on an out route on the next play. In the fourth quarter, he made a nice reception on the sideline. Still, with Chism basically writing his name on the 53-man roster in pen Saturday, Baker needs to convince the team to keep seven wide receivers for him to make it. It feels like a tall task for a guy who caught one of seven targets for 13 yards against the Vikings. A Vikings rookie fifth-round pick stiff-armed Bradbury several yards into the backfield in the first quarter, showing the veteran center's issues against strong, bullying defensive linemen. The Patriots don't really have a better option while Ben Brown, Cole Strange and Jared Wilson all focus on guard. But Bradbury could let up quite a few interior pressures this season, even though he moves well in the run game. It's not that Dugger made any horrendous plays on Saturday, but the team's seventh-highest-paid player (based on annual average value) was out there with mostly third-stringers in the final minutes of a preseason game. He made an interception on the last play when the Vikings threw it up for the tie, but then failed to get down right away. If it had been a regular-season game, the refs may have overturned the call and determined he fumbled. Just the fact that he was in for the final drive is awfully telling — and damning — about what the Patriots coaches think of Dugger right now. Spot the pattern. Miami Dolphins take down Detroit Lions 24-17 in preseason battle
Backup quarterback Zach Wilson had a strong first half for the Dolphins and third-stringer Quinn Ewers threw for two second-half touchdowns as Miami beat the Detroit Lions 24-17 in the preseason on Saturday. The teams had a pair of joint practices earlier in the week. Both teams' starters participated in those workouts, but Saturday's game was all about the reserves who are trying to earn roster spots. Wilson, the Dolphins' No. 2 QB behind Tua Tagovailoa, completed 15 of 23 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown. Ewers went 11 of 17 for 116 yards. The Lions also took a long look at their second- and third-string quarterbacks with Jared Goff on the sideline. Kyle Allen impressed in the first half, going 14 for 17 with 124 yards and two scores. Hendon Hooker struggled in the final two quarters, completing 6 of 13 throws for 61 yards and an interception. Ollie Gordon II had 50 yards rushing for the Lions on 10 carries. Jacob Saylor had 13 carries for 39 yards. The Dolphins took a 7-0 lead on Wilson's 11-yard pass to Dee Eskridge late in the first quarter. Detroit tied the game midway through the second on Allen's 11-yard pass to Jackson Meeks. Miami drove to the Detroit 9 in the final two minutes of the first half, but Isaac Ukwu sacked Wilson on fourth-and-4. Isaac TeSlaa caught an 18-yard pass from Allen with 30 seconds left to give the Lions a 14-7 halftime lead. Ewers threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Theo Wease Jr. on his first drive to tie the game, but a fumbled punt led to a 33-yard field goal by Jake Bates and a 17-14 Lions lead. Ewers hit Wease for an 8-yard score to make it 21-17 with 12:22 to play, and Jason Sanders kicked a 21-yard field goal to make it a seven-point game with 1:53 left. The Lions drove to the Miami 13 in the last 30 seconds, but Ethan Robinson intercepted Hooker's pass with 22 seconds left. Dolphins: Finish the preseason next Saturday, when they host Indianapolis. Lions: Host Houston next Saturday in their preseason finale.
