Dubai Secures BCL Asia 2025 as Top Basketball Event Returns for Second Year
Dubai will once again host the continent's premier basketball tournament as FIBA Regional Office-Asia confirms the city as the venue for the Basketball Champions League Asia (BCL Asia) 2025.
Following the success of last year's inaugural edition, this marks the second consecutive year Dubai will stage the prestigious event. The tournament will run from June 7 to 13, attracting top club teams from across Asia.
The Group Phase will be held at the Sheikh Saeed Bin Maktoum Sports Hall, the same venue that hosted the 2024 games. The Final Phase will move to the Coca-Cola Arena, offering a larger and more advanced stage for the region's elite basketball showdown.
Organizers expect the tournament to build on last year's momentum, with growing fan interest and increasing regional visibility. Hosting BCL Asia 2025 further reinforces Dubai's position as a hub for international sporting events.
Details on participating clubs and ticketing are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Al Hammadi noted that this achievement is rooted in the visionary leadership of the UAE, a clearly defined roadmap, and a firm commitment to the highest standards of safety and transparency, underpinned by strong international cooperation. In statements to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Al Hammadi added that the UAE has been a pioneer in international cooperation and coordination within the nuclear energy sector. He pointed to the country's significant efforts in this vital field, which culminated during the COP28 with over 30 nations pledging to triple global nuclear energy capacity by 2050 as part of the drive toward climate neutrality. Additionally, nearly 120 companies and banks worldwide committed to supporting this ambitious goal. Cooperation with the Republic of Korea has served as the cornerstone for the successful development of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant. Over time, this partnership has expanded to include new investment opportunities in international ventures, including the deployment of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). On the regulatory front, the UAE's Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) maintains agreements with its Korean counterpart covering joint inspections and capacity building. These ties are further strengthened through regular meetings to monitor technological advancements and regulatory developments. With the United States, the UAE has signed a series of strategic agreements aimed at advancing nuclear innovation and sustainability. These include a Memorandum of Understanding with the U.S. Department of Energy's Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to develop solutions for producing hydrogen, water, and steam at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant. The UAE has also partnered with TerraPower to support the development of advanced reactors, and signed an MoU with General Atomics (GA), a leading US advanced technology solutions company, to collaborate on using advanced technologies and materials for nuclear energy supply. Most recently, a partnership was announced with GE Vernova to jointly evaluate the deployment of the BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology internationally. As part of its efforts to expand its network of strategic partnerships, the UAE is actively exploring avenues of cooperation with China in the development and operation of nuclear power plants, both domestically and in third countries. Areas of collaboration include the operation and maintenance of nuclear facilities, the development of high-temperature gas-cooled reactors, nuclear fuel supply chains, and investment opportunities. In parallel, FANR has strengthened its ties with counterpart agencies through agreements that enhance cooperation in nuclear safety, security, non-proliferation, and capacity building, further reinforcing the UAE's commitment to global nuclear governance. In a move that underscores the expanding international footprint of the UAE's nuclear programme, ENEC has signed a cooperation agreement with Romania. As part of the agreement, the UAE will support the development of a Small Modular Reactor (SMR) project in Romania, backed by an investment of $275 million. Checkmate: Dubai inmates rank fifth in Asian chess tournament
A team of inmates from Dubai Police Central Jail took fifth place at the first online edition of the Asian Inmate Chess Championship. The tournament, held under the supervision of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), featured 23 teams from eight countries across Asia. Dubai Police picked a team of eight inmates from Dubai Central Jail after a tournament held in April this year inside the jail with the participation of 40 inmates organised in collaboration with Dubai Chess and Culture Club. Dubai Police said on Saturday that, despite the tough competition, the team ranked fifth in the last rounds where teams were divided into 15 teams of men, four teams of women and four teams of juveniles. Lt Col Mohammed Al Obaidli, director of inmate education and training department at Dubai Police expressed his pride of the honourable participation in the tournament. 'We are keen to participate in chess tournaments and other sporting activities. It aims to develop discipline, focus and skills among inmates as part of our rehabilitation programmes,' Lt Col Al Obaidli said. 'We are proud of the result and the performance of our time in first-of-its kind championship. 'We are looking to build self-confidence and develop positive behaviour as well as boost the mental and sporting skills of inmates. We want to highlight the potentials especially as it's a mental sport based on discipline and patience.' According to FIDE, the online chess championship for prisoners marked a significant milestone in the effort to bring chess into correctional institutions worldwide. 'As part of the Chess for Freedom initiative, this expansion provides incarcerated individuals with new opportunities for intellectual engagement, rehabilitation, and reintegration into society,' FIDE said on their website. The tournament was played on using a 10-minute + 5-second increment time control. Dubai Police is preparing to participate in the fifth Intercontinental Chess Cup for Prisoners, scheduled for October this year, where Dubai Police will return as the previous edition's title-holder. The inmates' team beat 115 other chess squads from 51 countries at the international chess tournament organised by the Cook County Office in Chicago, and held online for three days last year. 'We are looking to defend our title and will keep working to represent UAE and Dubai Police,' Lt Col Al Obaidli said.
