Shoppers race to get their hands on popular Christmas chocolate spotted on shelves at a major supermarket

Scottish Sun6 days ago
A POPULAR Christmas chocolate has been spotted at a major supermarket, despite the big day being five months away.
Eagle-eyed shoppers have spotted pouches of Quality Street chocolates on the shelves in Asda.
1
Shoppers have raced to get their hands on Quality Street Favourites pouches
The pouches of Quality Street Favourites cost £3.50 for a 334g bag.
Every pouch contains just a few flavours of Quality Street chocolate, helping to avoid leaving unwanted sweets at the bottom of your tin.
Among the flavours on offer are Mixed Cremes and a Golden Selection.
Shoppers have taken to social media to voice their excitement at spotting the popular treats.
One person took to Facebook to share the news and said: 'Things are getting festive at Asda.'
A second person commented and said: 'I love christmas so it's perfect, just waiting for the Christmas decorations in The Range.'
While a third added: 'Might try and get some of these for our pick n mix table xx.'
But not everyone was excited about spotting Christmas treats in stores so early in the year.
One disgruntled person said: 'In July??'
While another added: 'Oh crikey.'
It's not the only Quality Street treat on offer in Asda.
The supermarket also brought back the Green Triangle-inspired sharing bar after two years.
It costs £3.50 for an 84g bar and it has the flavours of the iconic Green Triangle, which is usually found in Quality Street tins.
The bars landed on shelves in 2023 but were axed just a year later.
Why are products axed or recipes changed?
ANALYSIS by chief consumer reporter James Flanders.
Food and drinks makers have been known to tweak their recipes or axe items altogether.
They often say that this is down to the changing tastes of customers.
There are several reasons why this could be done.
For example, government regulation, like the "sugar tax," forces firms to change their recipes.
Some manufacturers might choose to tweak ingredients to cut costs.
They may opt for a cheaper alternative, especially when costs are rising to keep prices stable.
For example, Tango Cherry disappeared from shelves in 2018.
It has recently returned after six years away but as a sugar-free version.
Fanta removed sweetener from its sugar-free alternative earlier this year.
Suntory tweaked the flavour of its flagship Lucozade Original and Orange energy drinks.
While the amount of sugar in every bottle remains unchanged, the supplier swapped out the sweetener aspartame for sucralose.
Meanwhile, Asda is also selling festive Dairy Milk Winter Wonderland chocolate bars.
The milk and white chocolate bar contains Christmas tree-shaped pieces and is described as 'perfect for a stocking filler or a little treat at Christmas time' by Cadbury.
It costs £1.64 for a 100g bar.
The supermarket is also selling Terry's Chocolate Orange Segsations, which contain five delicious flavours.
The bags weigh 360g and cost £3.50.
More chocolate news
The Quality Street bar isn't the only popular treat to return to supermarkets.
Mars recently brought back its White Chocolate Maltesers after 11 years off shelves.
Plus more chocolates are launching in supermarkets.
Cadbury has released a new Dairy Milk Iced Latte flavour in the UK.
The bar combines classic Dairy Milk chocolate with a creamy coffee filling and crunchy biscuit pieces.
Cadbury also recently brought out a White Dipped Twirl that is a mix of milk and white chocolate.

I tried instant coffee from Asda, Tesco, Aldi, Lidl and more - £2.30 one was just as good as Nescafé

From Asda and Tesco to Waitrose and M&S, our coffee lover tried to find a supermarket brand that matched up to Nescafé and Kenco - here is how they ranked against the leading names As someone who's never tried supermarket instant coffees, I was intrigued to see how they'd stack up against big names like Nescafé and Kenco. There's something special about a fresh brew made with rich, aromatic coffee beans and a good dollop of milk. ‌ But shelling out for three or four Costa coffees a week is starting to make a noticeable dent in my finances. In an effort to cut costs, I've decided to explore the world of instant coffee, taking in both leading brands and supermarket own labels. ‌ To keep things fair, I chose similar types of instant coffees - all promising rich and smooth flavours - and added the same amount of coffee and milk as I usually do. ‌ If I were to go for an instant coffee, it would typically be Nescafé, and I've rarely strayed from that. As the kettle started to boil, I was keen to get this taste test underway, reports the Express. 1. Asda The Asda coffee didn't exactly get us off to a flying start. The aroma upon opening the pack left a lot to be desired, but the sight of large chunks of freeze-dried coffee gave me hope that less might deliver more in terms of strength. ‌ Sadly, I was wrong. While it provides a reasonably smooth sip, if you're looking for a hearty kick of strong coffee, Asda's Just Essential Instant Coffee, priced at £1.08, doesn't quite deliver. Rating: 4.5/10 ‌ 2. Morrisons Morrisons ' own-brand Savers Instant Coffee, coming in at a mere £1.15, is not one I'd readily recommend. On first whiff, it was practically odourless, and the faint smell it did release was oddly chemical. Rating: 3/10 3. Tesco Tesco's own £1.15 coffee didn't fare much better, emitting an aroma that seemed to confuse chemicals with coffee – hardly the best start. ‌ The scent all but disappeared once hot water hit the cup, and the granules dissolved at breakneck speed, faster than most I've sampled. The taste was on the bitter side, but it wasn't entirely terrible. Rating: 4/10 4. Lidl Lidl's Bellarom Rich Roast instant coffee, priced at £1.79, is marketed as a "full flavoured instant coffee" with a four out of five strength rating – a statement I found quite optimistic. ‌ Opening the jar revealed little to no aroma, and the coffee it produced was notably weak. It was a relief not to encounter any bitterness, but the coffee flavour was so subtle it was more like a lukewarm, milky drink. Even after mixing two level teaspoons with hot water and adding milk, the flavour failed to make an impression. Rating: 4.5/10 ‌ 5. Aldi Aldi's Alcafe Rich Roast coffee, which costs £1.99, caught me off guard with its unexpectedly sweet smell, which didn't quite match up with its description. The flavour was mild and smooth, not quite hitting the mark of a top-notch coffee, but it was still somewhat pleasant. Rating: 6/10 ‌ 6. Sainsbury's This £2.30 coffee from Sainsbury's was delightfully fragrant from the get-go, a characteristic not many others could claim. The coffee took its time to dissolve in water, but delivered a smooth blend with a pleasing coffee hit. You could easily mistake it for Nescafé just by the taste. Score: 8.5/10 ‌ 7. M&S Upon brewing a cup of M&S ' Rich and Smooth coffee, I noticed it was free of stray granules, much like Aldi's offering, and had a gentle, smooth profile. However, it didn't quite deliver the caffeine kick I was after-- but at a modest £1.20, I can't grumble too much. Score: 6/10 ‌ 8. Waitrose This Waitrose blend boasted a chocolatey aroma with a bitter end note, while undissolved granules lingered at the bottom of my mug. Despite its sweet scent, this £1.65 coffee left a harsh, bitter aftertaste. Score: 3/10 9. Kenco Expecting this coffee to be a top contender, given the brand's popularity and its £7.75 price tag, I was surprised when it failed to impress me. The coffee was smooth but had a very subtle aroma and flavour. ‌ Score: 6.5/10 10. Nescafé The Nescafé original instant coffee is a familiar favourite. It was pleasant and smooth and - in simple terms - you get what you pay for: a decent brew. However, in the current climate, £7.25 a jar is not something that many can justify on a stretched budget. ‌ Rating: 8/10 Verdict When it comes to flavour, both Sainsbury's and Nescafé hit the mark, but Sainsbury's had a slight advantage for me, considering its cost. The coffee boasted a truly smooth texture and was generally quite pleasing to the palate. I wouldn't think twice about grabbing another jar on my next shop.

Duck & Dagger opening helped by lettings firm Legat Owen

The Duck and Dagger opened earlier this month in the Steam Mill, in Steam Mill Street, and is another pub from the team behind the popular Coach House Inn, also in Chester. The pub's owners explained that they chose the name to reflect the city's Roman heritage and also some of their near neighbours as they opened on July 18. They said: 'We chose the name The Duck and Dagger to reflect the character of the area. 'The duck represents the many feathered locals you'll find just outside on the canal. 'And the dagger is a nod to Chester's rich Roman heritage. 'It's a name with a bit of charm and a story behind it – just like the city itself. 'We hope you'll pop in soon and see what we've done with the place.' Read more The pub is offering a menu including Sunday roast dinners, and you can find everything on its Facebook page by searching Duck & Dagger. Meanwhile, city lettings agents Legat Owen has revealed its delight in the role it has played in securing the new pub's premises. A spokesman said: 'We're delighted to announce that Legat Owen has successfully secured a new letting at The Steam Mill, Chester, on behalf of our client. 'The ground floor, formerly home to Artichoke, has welcomed The Duck & Dagger – a brand-new venture from the team behind the much-loved Coach House Inn. 'Expect hand-pulled ales, hearty food, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. 'This exciting addition is set to enhance Chester's vibrant food and drink scene and reflects the continued strength of the city's independent hospitality sector. 'Legat Owen is proud to support local businesses and play a part in shaping Chester's dynamic high street. 'The Duck & Dagger is sure to be a hit – and we can't wait to see what summer 2025 brings for them! 'Cheers to new beginnings!'

8 ways to save £725 in time for Christmas with minimal effort

MoneyMagpie Editor and financial expert Vicky Parry warns of Christmas debt already looming – and how to avoid it Christmas is five months away and you probably aren't even thinking about it yet. You've got the school holidays or your annual vacation to worry about first! ‌ However, putting a plan in place right now means you won't be panicking come December – or worse, getting into debt. The average UK household spent an average of £713 extra in December 2024 on top of their usual monthly outgoings. If you plan now, you can save £700 in time for Christmas, so you're not reaching for the credit card to cover it. ‌ Try these things to save money between now and Christmas. When you save using something like a discount code, pay yourself the difference between the discounted and full price to top up your Christmas fund faster, too. ‌ Get the best deals and tips from Mirror Money WHATSAPP GROUP: Get money news and top deals straight to your phone by joining our Money WhatsApp group here. If you're curious, you can read our Privacy Notice. Switch your bank account Banks love to tempt new customers, which is why many offer financial incentives to switch your main current account to them. At the time of writing, you could earn up to £180 free cash simply for switching. Make sure you switch using the Current Account Switch Service when you apply. This not only makes you eligible for the cash but also protects against any problems such as payments going to or from your old account. The best current account switch deals right now are: ‌ Each has eligibility requirements, so read the small print before you apply. Christmas fund top-up: £175+ ‌ Get a balance transfer credit card If you're paying a lot in interest each month on your credit card, and it feels like you're constantly only paying interest and not your balance, it's time for a rethink. A balance transfer credit card allows you to shift your existing balance to it, with a 0% interest period. This is often a year (sometimes more), to give you some breathing space, so your monthly repayments go on reducing your actual balance instead of spiralling interest. Make sure you pay off the balance before the end of the 0% period to avoid high interest fees. Balance transfer cards also have high rates for purchases, so keep it only for shifting your existing balance rather than spending. ‌ Christmas fund top-up: £50+ Shop around on insurance If you have insurance policies coming up for renewal in the next few months, make a note ahead of the date it renews. Turn off auto-renew, too. A couple of weeks before your policy ends, shop around and compare prices on a site like GoCompare or MoneySupermarket for a like-for-like quote. If you like your current provider, go back to them to ask them to match the quote – or, go with the new provider instead. ‌ Christmas top-up fund: £50+ Set a cashback site as your homepage When you're shopping for your insurance, or your mobile phone contract, or even your everyday spending, a cashback website will build you a nice pot of money for your Christmas savings. Sign up to a few, as some have exclusive deals with retailers. Set your favourite as your browser homepage, to remind yourself to check on the cashback site if there is a deal to be had as soon as you start shopping for something online. Reputable cashback sites include TopCashback, Swagbucks, and Quidco. ‌ Search for discount cards and schemes While discount cards used to only be for students, these days there are lots of schemes that mean you could be eligible for discounts on your everyday spending. The TOTUM card, formerly the NUS student card, has expanded its remit to include a wide range of people, not just students. If you're a member of a professional organisation or undertaking some professional development study, you're eligible. ‌ Key workers can apply for schemes such as those run by Network, who also offer a discount scheme for carers (including unpaid carers, unlike many similar schemes). Christmas fund top-up: £50+ Switch to a water meter As water prices continue to rise, so does the need to switch to a water meter. If you're single or living in a couple, or have more bedrooms than people in your home, it's likely that a meter could save you hundreds of pounds a year. ‌ Water meters mean you pay for the water you use rather than a property estimate. Make sure it's the right choice for you though, as once a property goes on a meter it can't be reversed. Tenants with a rental contract longer than six months can apply for a meter too – their landlord can only refuse permission if it would cause unreasonable cost to install (such as digging up a garden to get to the pipe). Christmas fund top-up: £150+ Use supermarket loyalty cards If you like to shop at a supermarket with a loyalty card, make the most of it! These days, many run 'loyalty only' prices which can save a significant chunk of change on your weekly shop. ‌ More than that, you can earn points to put towards money off your Christmas shop. Some also offer deals to exchange points for days out or products, such as Tesco Clubcard and Sainsbury's Nectar, which could save you a ton of cash on buying Christmas gifts. If you are looking for a new credit card or want to be particularly savvy (and a loyal customer), using a card such as one from Tesco Bank or Sainsbury's can help you earn even more points on your everyday spending, too. Just make sure you pay in full each month. Christmas fund top-up: £100+ ‌ Sweep £25 on payday Set up a standing order between your current account and a Christmas savings pot, so that you sweep £25 on payday. That'll save you at least £100 between now and Christmas, without you noticing! Paying yourself first is a great habit to get into to build a savings pot or emergency fund. Work out your monthly budget and if you can afford more than £25, set the standing order for that amount. If it sweeps across the day you're paid, it's much easier to ignore the cash compared to when it's sitting in your current account. Christmas fund top-up: £100+ There you have it: if you follow all of these tips, you could save at least £725 in time for Christmas.
