'Breaking Glass' (1980) Blu-Ray Review - Underrated Music Drama Embraces The Punk Spirit

Video Quality
Breaking Glass comes to Blu-Ray courtesy of Fun City Editions with a digital AVC encoded 1080p transfer in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio that is derived from a new 4K restoration of archival elements. This release is the longer UK cut of the film that has not previously been available domestically. The U.S. cut of the film was previously released on Blu-Ray in 2011 with an older master from Olive Films, but we have never seen that release to compare. The presentation retains the natural textured film grain free of ugly DNR or other digital nuisances. Everything appears to be authentic to its intended appearance yet refined to avoid any clumpy grain frozen in the background.
Image stability and clarity are exceptional with textures of the clothing, the show makeup, and dingy production design showcasing resolutely. Most instances of print damage such as nicks and scratches have been eradicated, but there are a few sections where the footage exclusive to the UK cut has some lingering damage due to the condition of the source. This is not a major distraction, and the effort to present the film uncut is a blessing for fans. Skin tones are natural and consistent across the ensemble with distinct features such as pores and stubble easily observable in close-up. The colors are faithfully saturated with deep, natural hues coming through with ideal accuracy. There is a fair amount of bright costumes and flourishes in the production design and lighting to make this a visually daring experience. Black levels hold up favorably with no moments of crush or banding spotted. Highlights never struggle with blooming. Fun City Editions has put forth impeccable work here.
Audio Quality
The Blu-Ray comes with a DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio track that handily satisfies every sonic requirement of this music-driven narrative. Dialogue holds up well with this with every exchange coming through clearly in all environmental circumstances. There are some thick accents at play, so some may need to engage the subtitles to get some of the vocal nuances. The star of this show is the music, and this release conjures every enthralling tune with the utmost strength as it fills the room. We did not experience any sonic shortcomings or signs of age-related wear such as hissing, sibilance, or distortion. This track delivers a pleasant experience on all fronts for this rocking feature. Final Thoughts
Breaking Glass tackles a familiar artistic trope of a renegade musician who breaks through and has to struggle with the realities of fame. This is perfectly fine, as it is what writer-director Brian Gibson and star Hazel O'Connor do with the story that makes it special. There is a clear personal element to the narrative that grounds the audience, and the sociopolitical backdrop brings some effective thematic commentary to add some gravitas. The music at the center of everything is very catchy and exciting, and the ensemble that brings everything to life on and off the stage keeps things quite compelling. Fun City Editions has delivered a Blu-Ray featuring a rewarding A/V presentation and a valuable assortment of special features. We could not ask for more. Recommended

'Careless Whisper' Appears on Several Charts 'Careless Whisper' appears on only two song rankings in the U.K. at the moment, and it's a top 40 win on both of them. The song jumps up the Official Physical Singles Sales chart, which ranks the bestselling tracks on formats like CD, vinyl, and cassette. Last week, it sat at No. 62, but now it rises to No. 36. Coincidentally, it hits that mark in its thirty-sixth frame on this roster. 'Careless Whisper' Reappears Inside the Top 40 At the same time that 'Careless Whisper' bolts back into the top 40 on the Official Physical Singles Sales chart, it reenters the Official Vinyl Singles chart. Michael's cut didn't appear on the list of the bestselling individual tunes on wax in the U.K. just days ago, but now it's back at No. 38. George Michael and Wham! 'Careless Whisper' was originally released on Wham!'s sophomore album Make It Big, but the tune is credited solely to Michael in the U.K. The track dropped in the summer of 1984, but it didn't become a hit on either the Official Physical Singles Sales chart or the Official Vinyl Singles chart until October 2024. Since then, the tune has departed the vinyl ranking several times, while it has never disappeared entirely from the Official Physical Singles Sales tally. 'Careless Whisper' Reached No. 1 All Around the World 'Careless Whisper' was a quick No. 1 hit in a number of countries all around the world in the mid-80s. The tune easily topped the main list of the most consumed songs in the U.K. and also brought Wham! to the summit on the Hot 100 in America. The track was credited to both the group and Michael as a soloist in the U.S. and still stands as one of his and the duo's most popular compositions to this day.

Everything To Know About Black Sabbath & Ozzy Osbourne's Final Show

More Walter/WireImage) Back to the Beginning – Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath's final farewell concert – is kicking off in less than 24 hours. On Saturday July 5th, the one day festival set in the band's hometown of Birmingham, England, will showcase performances from just about every iconic heavy metal band and musician under the sun, including Metallica, Guns N' Roses, Slayer, Alice In Chains, TOOL, Gojira and so many more. Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne will cap off the evening with their final performances, though the length of their sets might be shorter than what concertgoers are expecting. How Many Songs Will Black Sabbath And Ozzy Osbourne Perform? In an interview with rock icon Sammy Hagar, Ozzy Osbourne stated that he'd be performing 'little bits and pieces" at Back to the Beginning. According to Hagar, Osbourne is planning to perform five songs from his solo material with one of those songs being his epic, 'No More Tears.' Hagar apparently will be performing Osbourne's hit 'Flying High Again' as well. While there's nothing that's been made public with regards to set times, given the state of Osbourne's health, him performing at least five songs with Black Sabbath and his solo material seems reasonable. However, that's not to say that there will only be five Sabbath and five Ozzy songs performed. With the sheer number of guest musicians appearing at Back to the Beginning, there's likely to be a plethora of Sabbath and Ozzy songs performed by several iconic rock and metal musicians, possibly even with members of Black Sabbath and former members of Ozzy Osbourne's solo career. Zakk Wylde and former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Jake E. Lee will be making an appearance, so fans will most definitely be treated to multiple eras of Ozzy Osbourne's solo material. It's also likely that many of the bands performing will cover Sabbath or Ozzy material, particularly Metallica, Guns N' Roses, and Pantera who have a history of covering Black Sabbath. How Long Will Each Act Play For? Including Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath there at least 13 full bands slated to perform at Back to the Beginning. This isn't including the several dozens of guest musicians that are also on the bill. With that in mind, the show will kick off at 12pm BST and it's expected to go into the late evening. It's difficult to measure the exact length each band will play, but it'd be a safe bet to say there will be between 30 and 50 minute set times, with the latter given to the bigger acts like Metallica and Guns N' Roses. It's also said there will be a rotating stage, where essentially one half of the stage will be utilized for setting up the next act, while the other half will be used for whomever is currently performing. This will make changeover times way more efficient and possibly give acts more time to perform than what fans are expecting. There are apparently bands that are booked for Back to the Beginning that haven't yet been revealed. According to festival promoter Andy Coping, 'there's a couple of acts that have confirmed but not been announced yet.' If this is the case, then it's even more difficult to gauge what set times will actually look like, furthermore who these unannounced acts could be. Seeing that three out of four of thrash metal's Big Four is booked (Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax), it's entirely possible Megadeth could be one of the unannounced acts. Regardless of the Big Four, they're one of the only bands missing that seems odd given their significance to the metal genre, especially in the '80s and '90s. Where to Watch Back To The Beginning Initially when it was announced, Back to the Beginning was only going to be a live in-person event. However, given the huge demand for the concert, the entire one-day festival will be live streamed via Mercury Studios and Kiswe. The livestream will be delayed by 2-hours from the in-arena start time and will be starting at 3pm BST. Tickets for the livestream are priced at $29.99 and can be purchased here.

BBC Admits Bob Vylan Were Deemed 'High Risk' Before Glastonbury & Apologizes To The Jewish Community
The BBC has admitted that controversial punk duo Bob Vylan were deemed 'high risk' before Glastonbury took place over the weekend, while the board has thrown its weight behind Director General Tim Davie and the 'swift actions' he took on the day. BBC Chair Samir Shah and Davie also apologized to 'viewers, listeners and particularly the Jewish community' over the debacle. 'Prior to Glastonbury, a decision was taken that compliance risks could be mitigated in real time on the live stream – through the use of language or content warnings – without the need for a delay,' said the BBC. 'This was clearly not the case.' Going forwards, any performance deemed high risk will now not be broadcast live or streamed live, the BBC said, while editorial policy support will always be available on site at major music festivals and events. Deadline understands that senior staff involved in the output have stepped back from their roles temporarily, with The Times reporting that Lorna Clarke, the BBC's director of music, is among those stood down. 'Given the failings that have been acknowledged we are taking actions to ensure proper accountability for those found to be responsible for those failings in the live broadcast,' added the BBC. 'We will not comment further on those processes at this time.' The BBC again expressed regret for not cutting the live stream of Bob Vylan, while saying that 'warnings appeared on the stream on two occasions and the editorial team took the decision not to cut the feed.' It added that the team on the day had prioritized 'stopping the performance from featuring on demand.' The duo chanted 'death to the IDF' and complained about working for a 'f***ing Zionist' during their set. They are now being investigated by the police, have been dropped by UTA and had U.S. visas revoked. Today's acknowledgement that Bob Vylan had already been flagged as 'high risk' will likely only lead to more questions for Davie and his team. Since Glastonbury, it has emerged that Davie was present on the day of Bob Vylan and controversial Irish hip-hop trio Kneecap's performance, and it was Davie who took the decision to remove Bob Vylan's performance from iPlayer. Shah backs Davie Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said the BBC has a 'problem of leadership' in the wake of Glastonbury but today Shah and the board communicated their full support for Davie. Shah said the board had met on Tuesday to hear what actions were being taken and the 'executive have agreed to put in place a set of strengthened editorial practices and policies for live music programming.' 'The Board fully supports the Director-General and the swift actions taken by him and his team to identify these errors and address them,' said Shah. He apologized to 'all our viewers and listeners and particularly the Jewish community for allowing the 'artist' Bob Vylan to express unconscionable antisemitic views live on the BBC.' Davie this week offered to meet with Jewish staff, many of whom have expressed fury at the debacle. Meanwhile, he is awaiting the report into the controversial Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone documentary, as pressure mounts. In his note to staff, he also apologized for 'offensive and deplorable behaviour appearing on the BBC.' 'I want to say sorry – to our audience and to all of you, but in particular to Jewish colleagues and the Jewish community,' said Davie. 'We are unequivocal that there can be no place for antisemitism at the BBC. I and everyone need to ensure that the BBC is a role model for inclusivity and tolerance and we all have a part to play.
