My girlfriend says she's in Witness Protection due to a bombshell past

Metro26-07-2025
When does a traumatic past stop sounding tragic and start to sound made up?
That's what this week's reader is trying to figure out. His girlfriend has told him stories of abuse, cancer, living under a fake name, and even claimed to be homeless at one point.
It seems like every week there's a new drama. His friends are urging him to face the fact that her tales might not be true. But he's clinging onto the hope that she's an honest person.
Read the advice below, but before you go, make sure to read last week's dilemma, where a reader found out her husband is cheating – despite her doing everything for him.
For the last 16 months I've been 'seeing' a gorgeous girl I'm really keen on, who lives the other end of the country. We met when she was in my town on business and immediately hit it off.
We message and facetime frequently, but our relationship is mostly on-line. This has been complicated by the fact that she has regular cancer treatment, so is often not available to talk to me or see me, as her treatment is tiring and debilitating.
Bit by bit she has told me her backstory, which is horrific – if it's true. She told me she was abused by a paedophile ring as a child, with the full cooperation of her mother. She has since testified against the perpetrators and as a result of that, she's in the Witness Protection Programme, which means she can only tell me her 'new' name, not her real birth name.
She also told me she has a young son but he's had to go into care, because she ended up living in her car when a previous boyfriend kicked her out (he was cheating) and that her son has been abused in the care home. She also told me that his best friend had died by suicide. I could go on.

It feels like every time I talk to her there's another drama. She has stressed multiple times that everything she tells me is confidential, but I've confided in a few friends who think it's all fantasy nonsense.
So far, she hasn't asked me for any money, and I really want to believe that she's a truthful and honest person. It's just the regularity of the bad news that has me asking questions.
I've had to edit your email as it was so long and full of your girlfriend's breathtaking stories, it would have taken up at least three of my columns in its full form.
I hate to be cynical, but the sheer volume of terrible things that have befallen this woman leave me in no doubt that your friends are right with their description of 'fantasy nonsense'.
Let's just examine a couple of things she's told you, beginning with the fact that she's supposedly in the Witness Protection Programme – and yet has willingly shared this highly confidential information. Does that ring true to you? By the way, in this country it's referred to as the UK Protected Persons Service (UKPPS), so I wonder whether she's just been watching too many American detective films.
Then there's the story about her living in her car, while she supposedly has cancer. There is so much support for cancer sufferers in this country, I find this tale impossible to believe. Anyway, where were her UKPPS support workers in her hour of need?
Fantasists like this are rare and you've been unlucky, but you've been gullible too. Maybe you are so desperate for commitment that you've slightly lost sight of common sense.
You say she hasn't asked you for money, but she might eventually; on the other hand, it may just be about power, and the 'fun' of manipulating your emotions. More Trending
My advice is to end things with her and look for a real relationship with someone who lives closer.
Adopt a more sceptical approach next time you hear wild stories, and listen to your friends. They have your best interests at heart.

Big Brother star sobs in court after buying petrol for Molotov cocktail

A Big Brother star, who appeared on the show in 2017, appeared in court along with two others over an incident that occurred at the Peggy Junes pub in Redcar earlier this year Former Big Brother contestant Simone Reed purchased petrol for a Molotov cocktail that was thrown at a person's head outside a bar earlier this year. The 36-year-old, who was a contestant on the hit show in 2017, drove with Carl Wild to a garage after threatening to firebomb the Peggy Junes pub in Redcar following a row. Reed watched as Wild, 34, launched the Molotov cocktail at reveller David Brotton. The petrol bomb hit Brotton on the head. A CCTV video showed Brotton rolling around on the ground attempting to put out the flames that engulfed his head, with a passerby rushing to help put it out. Wild was also seen walking into the pub, smashing up furniture, hitting out at patrons and ransacking the till. Three people were taken to hospital on February 15 with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Reed, who once auditioned for X Factor but did not make it through to the live shows, cried in court as she pleaded guilty to encouraging or assisting the commission of an offence - the offence being arson with recklessness as to whether life would be endangered. In her basis of plea, Reed said: "I had no idea that Carl was going to take it as far as he did... I did not expect at any point that anyone would suffer physical injury." The Big Brother star was given bail and a home curfew between 7pm and 5am. Wild admitted to causing grievous bodily harm with intent and aggravated burglary. Co-accused Lee Wild, 37, admitted causing fear of violence. Judge Laird KC had told the defendants: "Mr Wild and Ms Reed, along with your co-accused, I will sentence you on October 9. I haven't made my mind up about you Ms Reed but Mr Wild (Lee) you are likely to get a short sentence of imprisonment. "As your counsel has pointed out, you have served as long as a court could possibly sentence you to already. I don't want to sentence you in advance of the others. "I will amend your bail so it will now be on condition you don't go to the premises and you do not contact any prosecution witnesses by any means. "The others [including a curfew tag] can be removed so your life to a large extent can return back to what it was." Carl Wild remains in custody while Lee Wild and Reed were given conditional bail. The three's sentencing will take place on October 9.

Rapper shocks with admission he 'doesn't eat and just drinks a bunch of water'

Machine Gun Kelly has worried fans with his confession that he barely eats anything and just has 'a bunch of water' instead, a diet which could be 'dangerous' according to medical experts. Apparently, the Bad Things rapper – who recently welcomed a little girl with ex-partner Megan Fox – lives off bone broth, kimchi, and water. While promoting his new album Lost Americana, MGK appeared in a food-eating interview with Ladbible, but this has sparked a resurgence in concern about his diet. In a resurfaced clip, originally posted last month on Instagram account HipHop-N-More, the 35-year-old star revealed: 'I don't really eat. I just do water a bunch.' The men surrounding him were slightly confused, asking if he meant he followed a fasting diet, to which he nodded. 'Like, I ate that burger 'cause we're streaming,' MGK explained and praised his friend's cooking skills, but another man asked if they weren't filming, what would he have eaten. 'Probably water,' came the new father's shocking reply, prompting concerned questions about if he feels 'lightheaded' at all. 'Yeah, sometimes. I'll eat, like, a couple times a week,' the Home rapper confessed, stating his meals mainly consist of 'bone broth with kimchi and sauerkraut.' He added he will have celery juice and coconut water 'sometimes', with his diet rounded out by cigarettes and coffee. 'Because it has probiotics, you know?' MGK continued. 'So, like, when you do those water fasts, the only thing that's crazy is it kills all the good bacteria in you, too, so you gotta put the pro[biotics].' His friends declared he was 'healthy as hell' before one quoted a supposed study claiming that 'one seven-day fast removes like 80% of cancer-causing cells from your body'. Metro was unable to verify the existence of this study. The NHS explains on their website: 'Cancer is a condition where cells in the body grow in an uncontrolled way.' Cancer occurs when a cell undergoes a genetic mutation, causing it to divide and grow uncontrollably, so all cells in the body are potentially cancer-causing. MacMillan's website debunks claims that fasting can stop you getting cancer, adding: 'There is no good evidence that fasting reduces overall cancer risk. The cancer charity noted that you can 'help to reduce your risk by keeping a healthy weight and eating a balanced diet' but there is 'no one diet that can prevent cancer.' If you or someone you care about has been diagnosed with cancer, Macmillan can offer support and information. You can contact their helpline on 0808 808 00 00 (7 days a week from 8am to 8pm), use their webchat service, or visit their site for more information. As for MGK's water fasting diet, there are some studies that suggest short periods of time may improve health, but fasting for long periods is detrimental. Heathline acknowledged that 'water fasting may also promote autophagy, a process in which your body breaks down and recycles old, potentially dangerous parts of your cells.' However, 'water fasting has many risks and can be very dangerous if followed for too long.' The outlet added you should not fast for longer than 24-72 hours 'without medical supervision because of health risks.' MGK has previously shared his workout routine with Men's Health, consisting of five sessions per week to keep in shape for his energetic performances. 'When you physically feel good, mentally feel good,' he said, adding: 'I'm not Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, but people should look at me and think, If this guy can get into the gym, I can, too.' More Trending He's also said in the past how ex-partner Megan 'eats super healthy' compared to his menu of 'cheeseburgers'. While on 104.3 The Shark in 2020, MGK said: 'It would be cooler if there was just a soup place that was open all night. I would just order soup all night…isn't soup fire?! 'Soup goes super hard. I was not into the soup game for some years and now I totally get it. It's almost like the adult cereal.' Meanwhile, in 2022, Megan shared she followed a 'super strict' diet – which didn't include gluten, most carbs, alcohol or cigarettes. Got a story? Elizabeth Hurley reveals bond with Billy Ray Cyrus' daughters after summer break

Elizabeth Hurley has opened up about her budding relationship with Billy Ray Cyrus and spending time with his daughters, months after their romance was confirmed. The news that the couple were dating first came to light in April after a photo of them kissing was shared on social media over Easter weekend. Since then, Elizabeth, 60, and Billy Ray, 63, have looked increasingly loved-up, with the former revealing she's 'in love' as she celebrated her milestone birthday. Last night, they both attended the premiere of Channel 4's upcoming gameshow The Inheritance, where Metro had the chance to speak to the Gossip Girl star. 'I was thrilled that he could come here with me,' Elizabeth told us after posing with Billy Ray for photographers. The actress, who plays 'The Deceased' in The Inheritance, shared that she's recently spent quality time with her partner's daughters Miley Cyrus and Noah Cyrus, as they were both performing in London. 'We've had most of the summer off. We've seen both his daughters play in London, ironically, which is great, and we spent a lot of time with my son,' she said, referring to her son Damian Hurley. 'But this is actually the first business thing he's come to with me, and it's been great to have him here. Really nice.' At last night's premiere for The Inheritance, Elizabeth struck a contrast with Billy Ray on the red carpet, opting for a crimson dress while he wore an all-black ensemble. A week ago, she shared a post on Instagram comparing two tortoises that they found while hanging out in Tennessee and Herefordshire, as they travel between the US and the UK during their relationship. In May this year, Elizabeth told E! News how 'unexpected' their romance had been, stating: 'But we're very happy together. And hopefully we'll have a great life.' They originally met on the set of the 2022 film Christmas in Paradise, which also starred Kelsey Grammer, Nathalie Cox and Naomi Ferderick. 'We did very few scenes together but the couple times we were in the same scene there was a chemistry there,' Billy Ray told The Ty Bentli Show on Apple Music in April. 'We just laughed, and it was at a time I wasn't laughing a lot.' The country music star added that while he acknowledged how 'different' they were, they also found that they 'had way more in common than we had different'. In June, Elizabeth posted a picture on Instagram of her son Damian, 23, and Billy Ray's daughter Miley, 32, at the London premiere of the latter's film Something Beautiful, writing in her caption: 'The babies are all grown up ❤️.' Earlier that month, Billy Ray described Elizabeth as 'the love of my love' when he posted on Instagram in honour of her 60th birthday. More Trending Elizabeth has one child, Damian, who she shares with businessman Steve Bing. She was married to businessman Arun Nayar from 2007 until 2010, and previously had high-profile relationships with Hugh Grant and the late Shane Warne. Billy Ray has six children, including Christopher Cyrus, who he shares with Kristin Luckey. The musician and Tish Finley (now Cyrus-Purcell) share daughters Miley and Noah together, as well as a son called Braison. Billy Ray also adopted Tish's children from a previous relationship, Brandi Cyrus and Trace Cyrus. Got a story?
