Pedersen wins Giro stage 13 as Del Toro extends lead
MADS PEDERSON WON the 13th stage of the Giro d'Italia on Friday as Isaac Del Toro maintained his lead in the battle for the overall title.
Lidl-Trek rider Pedersen burst to victory in the final few hundred metres, holding off Wout van Aert in a thrilling end to a punchy 180 kilometres of riding from Rovigo to Vicenza.
Ireland's Sam Bennett was just over 16 minutes off Pederson's pace and remains remains 145th overall.
'I went a bit earlier than I really wanted to but on such a hard uphill final like this sometimes it's okay to go early because everyone has burning legs the last 100 meters,' said Pedersen.

Pedersen claimed his fourth stage of this year's Giro while wearing the sprint jersey, closing in on the six wins Tadej Pogacar racked up on his way to triumph at last year's edition of the Italian Grand Tour.
'I'm just happy with this one and adding another 50 points to the 'ciclomino' (sprint) jersey so let's see how it goes,' added Pederson.
'It's still far to Rome but now I'm just overwhelmed about winning again.'
Del Toro came in third and leads his UAE teammate Juan Ayuso by 38 seconds in the general classification, extending the gap over his title rivals.
Christian Scaroni was the last of the breakaway riders to be eventually caught with 10km left, on the second of two laps to Vicenza, setting up an engaging finale with a tough climb at the finish.
Romain Bardet made a bold attack with 9km to go, pulling fifteen seconds away alongside Pedersen's teammate Mathias Vacek.
Both were caught in the final kilometre by the peloton, and Pedersen rocketed away from the pack on a tough final climb to the line.
Saturday's 14th stage is another largely flat run from nearby Treviso, 195km to Nova Gorica across Italy's border with Slovenia.

Simon Yates secures his first Giro d'Italia triumph
SIMON YATES WON the Giro d'Italia on Sunday after cruising to overall victory in the final procession stage, won by his teammate Olav Kooij, around Rome. Briton Yates effectively secured his second Grand Tour triumph on Saturday when he took the leader's pink jersey with an epic effort in the Italian Alps. Advertisement The 32-year-old, who rides for Visma-Lease a bike, is the first man to win the Giro without taking a single stage since Alberto Contador 10 years ago. Kooij won the bunch sprint which has become a feature of the finales in Rome, pipping Kaden Groves, Matteo Moschetti and Mads Pedersen to claim his second win of this year's hugely entertaining three-week race around Italy. It was a perfect day for Visma-Lease a bike with Yates and Kooij both victorious in the Eternal City. Yates started the day stood alongside Pope Leo XIV who blessed the peloton in a short stop in Vatican City before the race proper started. The riders dismounted in front of the pontiff and Yates shook his hand before standing alongside points jersey winner Pederson, king of the mountains Lorenzo Fortunato and Isaac del Toro for a pre-race blessing. Simon Yates wraps up Giro d'Italia triumph in Rome
Britain's Simon Yates sealed victory in the Giro d'Italia following the final stage from the Vatican City to Rome. Yates took a lead of almost four minutes into stage 21 and finished safely in the peloton as Visma-Lease a Bike team-mate Olav Kooij came out on top in a sprint finish. Yates effectively sealed victory on Saturday's penultimate stage when he exorcised his personal demons on the Colle delle Finestre with a stunning solo attack to claim the race leader's pink jersey. On the mountain where his dreams of victory were shattered by Chris Froome's famous solo breakaway in 2018, Yates turned the tables with a masterclass of his own as his rivals were left to question their own tactics. The 32-year-old Lancastrian rode away from leader Isaac del Toro and Richard Carapaz on the brutal gradients and the gravel to turn an 81-second deficit and third place into a three minute, 56-second lead over Del Toro. With the final stage a largely-ceremonial affair, which started with the leading riders meeting Pope Leo XIV, only a serious crash would have denied Yates a second Grand Tour victory following his success in the 2018 Vuelta a Espana. He is the third British rider to win the Giro after Froome in 2018 and Tao Geohegan Hart in 2020. Co Tyrone's Darren Rafferty (EF Education-Easypost) finished 19th in the white jersey classification (best young rider).
