South Africa: MTN suffers data breach exposing customer information
The MTN Group has said in a statement last week, 24 April, that it has experienced a cybersecurity incident that has resulted in unauthorised access to the personal information of some of its customers in certain markets.

"Our core network, billing systems and financial services infrastructure remain secure and fully operational.
"An unknown third party has claimed to have accessed data linked to parts of our systems. At this stage we do not have any information to suggest that customers' accounts and wallets have been directly compromised," it said.
MTN said it immediately activated its cybersecurity response processes including informing the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Hawks in South Africa.
"We also informed the relevant country authorities and will continue to update them on an ongoing basis while working closely with them and law enforcement agencies in supporting their investigations.
"We are in the process of notifying affected customers in compliance with local legal and regulatory obligations," the telecoms company said.
As a reminder, MTN provided the following security measures for its customers:
- To mitigate any fraudulent consequences, a fraud alert can be placed on an individual's credit report at any of the major credit bureaus.
- Keep MTN, MoMo and banking apps and devices updated.
- Use strong, unique passwords for accounts and change them regularly.
- Be cautious of unexpected messages and do not click on suspicious links.
- Do not disclose information such as passwords, PINs and OTP when asked to do so by phone, text message or email.
- Where multifactor authentication is available, it should be activated.

There is a suspected perpetrator and there are deceased victims,' Mr Mncwango said. Mr Mncwango called on the South African Police Service's management to act in haste and in an appropriate manner when these incidents occur. 'We do not want this crime to be mischaracterised and therefore compromise investigations. This is a criminal conduct, purely punishable bylaw,' Mr Mncwango said. The committee sends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased children and their friends at school. 'We are with the bereaved families during this very difficult time of grief and wish them all the strength. May the souls of these children rest in eternal peace,' said Mr Mncwango. Nigeria: Telecoms subscribers decline by 43mln in one year —Report
AT least 43 million lines were disconnected from network service providers for non-compliance with the National Identification Number (NIN) SIM linkage policy of the Federal Government, report has revealed. The number of telecom subscribers in the country fell by 43.7 million subscribers from 216,974,742 in April 2024 to 172,948,309. This effectively reduced teledensity from 100.09 per cent to 79.78 per cent. Teledensity is calculated based on Nigerian Population Commission's projected population figure of 216 million, according to the NCC. A breakdown showed that Airtel subscribers dropped from 62,933,351 in April 2024 to 58,586,914 in April 2025. Globacom witnessed a drop from 62,055,248 in April 2024 to 20,607,726 in April 2025. The number of customers lost by Globacom was 20,607,726, making it the biggest loser. 9Mobile subscribers dropped to 2,964,445 in April 2025 from 8,956,568 subscribers in April 2024. However, MTN Nigeria Communications was the only telecom company that survived the shock. MTN saw a rise in its subscribers from 82,716,236 in April 2025 to 90,508,170 in April 2025. Analysis showed that the 43.7 million subscribers' loss was a result of the disconnection of unregistered lines. 'The removal of Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) that are not linked to verifiable National Identification Numbers (NINs) and the rectification of a major discrepancy by a Mobile Network Operator explain the significant drop in Nigeria's telecoms subscriber base,' the regulator explained in the report. In 2022, the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy announced that the NIN-SIM linkage policy was for national security and accuracy of the national SIM ownership database. Subscribers whose lines were not associated with a verified NIN were advised to complete NIN verification to reactivate their lines. After multiple deadlines for compliance, the NCC set a final deadline of September 14, 2024, for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to complete the linkage process. Vodacom pursuing joint fibre ventures in Africa broadband push
Vodacom Group is pursuing partnerships for joint fibre ventures as Africa's second-largest mobile operator looks to accelerate the rollout of high-speed broadband coverage across its markets. With the voice market slowing in parts of the continent including South Africa, telecom companies such as Vodacom and rivals MTN and Airtel Africa have doubled down on high-speed internet, an area long dominated by fibre companies such as Maziv-owned Dark Fibre Africa and Vumatel in South Africa. Vodacom wants to merge with Maziv but the deal has been prohibited by South Africa's competition authorities. Asked what will happen if its appeal with the Competition Appeal Court fails, Vodacom Group CEO Shameel Joosub said on a call with journalists that since funding for the proposed deal is still in the bank, the operator has "opportunities" to look at where else it could invest the money. "We will pursue fibre joint ventures in all our markets," Joosub said, adding that Vodacom had already set up a new entity in Tanzania and was working on fibre in Mozambique. "We're looking at different opportunities and different share the same ambition of wanting to make sure that we can provide connectivity," he added. The ideal joint venture structure for Vodacom would be a 50-50 split with Vodacom not concerned about controlling any vehicle, Joosub said. Rolling out fibre organically is a slow and costly expansion option at a time when mobile operators need to make up ground on existing fibre networks. Homes and businesses connected by Vodacom reached 198,000 in the year ended 31 March, while its own fibre passed almost 166,000 homes and businesses. Vodacom, majority-owned by UK-based Vodafone, has 211.3 million mobile network customers across eight African countries. It is also partnering with satellite providers, including Amazon's Project Kuiper.
