Energy bill warning as expert urges households to make £200 check this month

Daily Mirror17-05-2025

Households still feeling the financial wrath of soaring energy bills and council tax are being urged to complete one simple check that could result in an average refund of £200
Households could claw £100s back on their energy bills this month by making one simple check. While Brits across the nation are still feeling the financial wrath of ' Awful April ' - which saw council tax, energy bills, and even the TV Licence soar - energy firms are holding onto an estimated £3.28 billion in customer credit balances.
Research by money-saving experts over at Nous.co found that 57 per cent of households think their supplier owes them money, but 47 per cent weren't sure exactly what the balance on their account was. Across 2024, the average household credit balance was a staggering £215.

But, with a mild winter, it is even more likely that Brits will have built up credit - as their bills will be based on estimates driven by previous years' usage. If you've been paying by Direct Debit, May is the perfect month to see whether you've built up credit, as you'll likely start using less energy as the weather continues to improve.

"No one should have a big credit balance built up in their energy account right now," Greg Marsh of Nous.co said in a statement sent to the Mirror. "Most suppliers won't automatically refund you if you've paid too much, and could be unfairly holding on to money that you're owed.
"If you've got a traditional meter and haven't submitted a reading in a while, you'll be paying bills based on estimates that could be significantly out after an unusually mild winter. Energy companies know how hard it is to stay on top of this stuff, and hope that we just put up with paying more than we need to."

As previously reported, energy firms must follow 'reasonable steps' to make sure that your Direct Debit levels are fair and justifiable. If you're in lots of credit, call your supplier up for an explanation.

Energy rules strictly state that suppliers must provide a refund - or explain 'clearly' why they won't - if a customer requests a refund. If they don't, you can make a formal complaint, and if it rejects it, escalate it to the Energy Ombudsman for free, which can adjudicate," Martin Lewis ' MSE states.
Each energy firm has slightly different policies when it comes to issuing a refund. For example, EDF Energy requires customers to provide an up-to-date meter reading first, while British Gas says you can ask for a credit refund at any time. You can check your energy firm's policy here.
Will my energy bill start to fall?
Following years of spiralling energy costs, the government has finally confirmed its ambitious plans to cut annual costs by £300 by 2030. Through its Great British Energy scheme, Labour has vowed to 'harness clean energy' and have 'less reliance on volatile international energy markets'.
It has also pledged more funding for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which offers grants to support the transition from fossil fuel heating systems to heat pumps or biomass boilers. As previously reported, this would allow households to receive £7,500 towards an air source heat pump, £7,500 towards a ground source heat pump, or £5,000 towards a biomass boiler - which could knock £100 off annual energy bills.

Dog owner claims 89p-a-day natural food 'improved condition 100%' after vet's dire warning

The Pure Pet Food subscription box has a range of different flavours and vet-approved recipes packed with all-natural, unprocessed ingredients - and it's currently on offer Dog owners are turning to a natural food delivery service to help their pets get fit for summer, with some even claiming it's saved their dogs' lives. While recipe boxes like Hello Fresh and Gousto have long been popular among humans wanting to eat healthily, the new service from Pure Pet Food allows four-legged friends to receive their own customised menus delivered straight to their door. Customers who've already tried the service have hailed it as a 'game changer' for their pups. And the brand is currently offering a 40% off introductory deal for those thinking about trying it. The Pure Pet Food subscription box offers a variety of flavours and vet-approved recipes filled with all-natural, unprocessed ingredients, making it ideal for dogs suffering from food intolerances. Owners simply add water and stir to rehydrate the food, with some customers even using a bit of warm water to serve their furry friend a hot meal. The plan is delivered free of charge and starts from just 89p a day for a fully personalised menu based on the pet's age, weight and any health conditions. Currently, shoppers can save 40% on their first box and 15% off the next two. The ingredients are so natural that when the brand appeared on Dragon's Den, one of the company's owners impressed two of the Dragons by eating one of the recipes himself, reports the Mirror. Elsewhere, Marleybones is offering new customers 30% off their trial selection boxes, with Butternut Box dishing out 25% off owners' first two boxes in similar subscription services. Thousands of pet owners have already made the switch to this brand, with many reporting a significant improvement in their dogs' overall health and wellbeing. The food has been credited with helping to alleviate a range of issues, from skin conditions to digestive problems. With an impressive 4.6 out of 5-star rating on Trustpilot based on over 11,000 customer reviews, it's clear that this brand is making a real difference in the lives of dogs and their owners. Some customers have even gone so far as to say that the food has saved their dog's life. One reviewer shared a remarkable story of how the food helped to turn her 15 year old dog's health around. Despite being told by vets that her dog likely had cancer and that the prognosis was bleak, she started feeding him this brand and saw a dramatic improvement in his condition. She believes that the food has helped to manage her dog's gastrointestinal issues and has given him a new lease on life. She explained: "We have been on a roller coaster with Muttley since January this year, and at 15 years, I thought we were losing him. Scans, bloods, more scans and finally told that he must have cancer, but the vets didn't know where. I was advised to keep him comfortable and expect the worst soon. In fact, they would have happily put him to sleep at this time, as they said he looked worse. "Started him on Pure and have not looked back. I feel it's IBS or some similar gastrointestinal issue, not cancer at all, and when he's poorly, it's a flare-up. The vet wouldn't listen to me regarding this at all. Overall, his condition has improved 100%. "He still has occasional flare-ups, but nothing we can't manage. Many people have remarked on how well 'and younger' he looks. He plays with his toys again and goes for walks, all of which have pretty much stopped. This food is a life changer. I tell everyone I meet how it saved my boy and gave him his quality of life back." Another satisfied customer shared their positive experience, saying: "I honestly can't recommend Pure Pet Food enough. I love the way you can measure the correct amount your doggie needs, which helps with their weight. Lulu, my miniature dachshund, was overweight and had patchy skin with hair loss. We tried everything, after two months on this food, she is like a different dog, Her coat is glossy and she looks young again, I only wish they did this for humans!". Many customers have lauded the brand for its convenience and cost-effectiveness compared to raw food while still offering similar benefits. One customer detailed their experience: "Switching to Pure Pet Food has been a game-changer for feeding my two dogs. Previously, I fed them a raw diet, which led to numerous inconveniences. It required an extra freezer to store the meals, and I always had to remember to thaw it overnight, which became quite a hassle. Besides the logistical challenges, it was also rather costly. "Now I purchase just four bags each month, and I mix it with specialised kibble tailored for my German Shepherd and Dalmatian. The results speak for themselves! Their coats have never looked shinier, and their digestion has improved markedly. Overall, I couldn't be happier with this switch. Pure Pet Food has simplified our feeding routine and ensures my dogs are thriving without the hassle of a raw diet." However, not all pets were immediately taken with the natural cuisine – a discerning canine was reported to turn up its nose after an initial taste. "I have to say that the person on customer service was so polite and nice, which was so refreshing. However, my dog, who is fusy, did not like the chicken dog food. He ate it on the first two days with reluctance, and by the third day, he literally walked away from the bowl and didn't come back. I introduced the food slowly as instructed, but after a few days, my dog's stomach was churning, and I don't think it suited him." One contented customer gave four stars in their review, noting: "Pure provides an efficient service and the product is usually delivered on time. It's an excellent food product. My dog has had serious digestive issues in the past, including pancreatitis and inflammatory bowel syndrome. Since being on Pure, the health issues have stopped completely, and he is thriving. He loves the food too. I can thoroughly recommend the product. In addition, the team at Pure are always available and helpful."

Martin Lewis MSE names 5 major banks offering Brits free £175 bonus

Martin Lewis' MSE website has revealed how cash-strapped Brits can earn up to £200 for simply opening a new bank account, as five major lenders continue to offer lucrative incentives Brits are being urged to make the most of lucrative bank bonuses worth up to £200 - and they aren't just for new customers. If you're still feeling the financial wrath of 'Awful April', which saw a slew of household bills spiral, moving banks could help alleviate some of the pressure. It might sound too good to be true, but many high-street lenders actually offer huge incentives for new (and sometimes even existing) customers to lure them in. ‌ Often, this includes free cash bonuses, often referred to as legal bank 'bribes', or perks such as access to cashback deals, 0 per cent overdrafts, and high interest rate savings accounts. However, there will always be a slew of criteria customers need to meet in order to be eligible for the rewards. ‌ READ MORE: Tesco introduces huge Clubcard perk in car parks but there's a catch Martin Lewis ' MSE website states there are currently five banks offering switch bonuses this month, with one particular lender offering a hefty £200 free bonus. "Switching's usually quick and easy," MSE states. "In Martin's recent social media poll, 90 per cent of the 5,500 who'd switched said it was easy and hassle-free." First Direct - free £175 As previously reported, First Direct is currently offering newbies £175 if they open up an account using the Current Account Switch Service. Within 45 days of opening the account, you'll need to transfer at least two Direct Debits or standing orders, deposit £1,000, make five or more debit card payments, and log on to digital banking. First Direct is also offering a £250 interest-free overdraft (subject to status) and access to its 7.00 per cent AER/gross Regular Saver account. However, this offer is only available to new customers - and excludes those who have previously held a First Direct product or those who have opened an HSBC current account on or after January 1, 2018. Co-op Bank - free £100 The Co-operative Bank is still offering £100 for new customers, as long you deposit £1,000, have two or more Direct Debits, you register for online/mobile banking, and make at least 10 debit card transactions within the first 30 days of switching. Co-op warns that deposits or transactions made prior to the switch completion will not count towards the £100 criteria. You can also get £25 for three months (worth £75) by continuing to actively use your current account. This requires customers to deposit £1,000 or more, make ten or more card or digital wallet transactions, and have two active Direct Debits. If you do not meet the eligibility criteria for one of the months, you can still meet it in one of the following months. ‌ TSB - free £100 TSB is another bank offering newbies a £100 welcome bonus for completing a full switch to their Spend and Save account. You'll need to log into the TSB Mobile Banking App and make at least five payments on your debit card before July 19, 2025, to earn the bonus (which will be paid between August 2-16, 2025). Similar to the other banks, you'll need to have at least two Direct Debits and pay in £1,500 within 60 days of submitting your initial switch request. The generous offer isn't available for anyone who has held a current account with Santander on January 1, 2025, or if you've previously made use of a Santander switcher incentive. However, there is a big catch with this account, as you will have to pay in £3 per month to maintain it, and need to pay in £500 into your account each month. Still, with one per cent cashback on energy bills, council tax, broadband, TV, mobile and water bills (maxed at £10 per month) it could still be worth paying for the account. ‌ According to MSE, Santander is also offering one per cent cashback on supermarket, fuel and train spending. This is capped at £10 per month and is only valid until September 9, 2025. Nationwide - free £200 Arguably saving the best until last, Nationwide is offering a whopping £200 for those opening a Nationwide FlexDirect account. Impressive 425-miles UK train line with 11 stops branded 'Eurostar of Scotland'

Brits will soon be able to hop on board and travel more than 400 miles from London to the historic city of Stirling, thanks to a new railway expansion slated to launch in 2026 A huge railway expansion touted as the 'Eurostar of Scotland' is slated to launch next year - spanning a whopping 425 miles from London. Rail operator Lumo recently announced it had successfully secured five Class 222 six-car trains to link London Euston directly to Stirling - a historic city in central Scotland. The new route, which aims to be up and running as early as Spring 2026, will also stop at Milton Keynes, Nuneaton, Crewe, Preston, Carlisle, Lockerbie, Motherwell, Whifflet (serving Coatbridge), Greenfaulds (serving Cumbernauld) and Larbert. ‌ Lumo says the move will 'enhance travel choice and connectivity' for passengers along the central belt of Scotland, and that its new route will run five times a day each way. This particular route is already shared by Avanti West Coast, LNER and TransPennine Express - but Lumo will reportedly be the first provider not subsidised by the government. ‌ Zoe Adjey, senior lecturer at the Institute of Tourism and Hospitality at the University of East London, told the Metro that this will likely make tickets must 'cheaper'. "The service enhancement will significantly improve the passenger experience, especially compared to air travel," she added. "Air travel requires an initial transit to one of London's airports, followed by a two-hour wait for the flight, then a two-hour flight time. In contrast, rail travel involves just a quick journey to Euston station, followed by a five-hour train journey with WiFi, refreshments, and enhanced onboard services." At the time of writing, direct trains from London to Stirling cost as much as £206.80 for an 'Anytime Single' ticket. However, they can be bought for as little as £81.80 if you're flexible with dates. Purchasing a railcard can also help lower the cost of train fares. However, these tend to only offer discounts on Off-Peak times, weekends, and bank holidays - which doesn't help out commuters reliant on the network. ‌ In an online statement, Martijn Gilbert of Lumo said: "Today's announcement underscores Lumo's commitment to growing Scotland's rail network, providing passengers with more affordable, fast, and convenient travel options. Our new service between Stirling and London has the potential to unlock significant economic opportunities for communities along the route, and we're proud to deliver this direct rail connectivity to towns previously overlooked by traditional rail services." Sue Webber MSP, a Conservative Transport spokesperson, also hailed the announcement - arguing it will bring a staggering £740m in economic benefits by 2032. "Crucially, this is being delivered not by government mandate, but through private sector innovation and open access investment," she added. "That's why I believe this model is one we should be championing. Lumo is not replacing existing services – it's adding capacity, increasing choice, and growing the market for everyone." *Prices based on LNER listings for Tuesday, July 1.
