Life in the fast lane: Middle East's first all-women supercar club smashes petrolhead stereotypes

Washington Post04-05-2025

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — They socialized, shared stories and laughed together. Some are engineers, some are entrepreneurs, others are housewives. But these women all share a common passion: their love of supercars.
Dozens of women gathered over the weekend in Dubai to take part in a car rally across the United Arab Emirates.
The event was organized by the region's first ever all-female supercar owners club, the Arabian Gazelles, and saw 30 women living in the UAE and abroad take part in a four-day tour of the country.
Arabian Gazelles was created eight years ago by Hanan Mazouzi Sobati as a way to give women a seat at the table in the automotive scene
'It's really a product of sheer frustration … because women were overlooked in this automotive scene, and I thought someone has to do something about it and to bring in more women and to drive the change,' Mazouzi Sobati said as she drove her Lamborghini on the road to Fujairah.
Her passion for cars goes back as far as she can remember. While kids her age were watching cartoons, she says she was watching Formula 1. And the passion for supercars has now become the driving force for something even bigger: changing people's mentalities and perception over women and supercars.
Mazouzi Sobati saw how it was mainly men who were invited to car experiences and automotive events. When she set up Arabian Gazelles she says she was the only woman at these events, and even then, she went instead of her husband who was the one getting the invites, despite him not being a supercar enthusiast.
She said brands wouldn't support an all-woman car club at the start
'We want people to stop thinking there's always a man because they see a woman in a supercar; either a husband, a partner, a sugar daddy,' she said.
They have come a long way however, and Mazouzi Sobati is slowly seeing perceptions change.
As part of the Arabian Gazelle rally, the women were invited by BMW to test out cars on the race tracks.
'We do not need permission to drive, or to choose what kind of cars to drive. We do not need permission to have this passion,' she said. 'We do not wait for a seat at the table, if the seat is not available, we create the table and we all sit.'

Report: Most 2026 BMW Models Will Receive a Price Hike on July 1

BMW will raise prices on many of its 2026 models starting on July 1, according to a report from CarsDirect. The increase will amount to about 2 percent of the existing MSRP, with the price hike ranging from $1100 to $2500. Several models will escape the price bump, including the 2026 iX SUV and 2026 M2 coupe. The vast majority of BMW models will likely get more expensive starting next month. As reported by CarsDirect, a bulletin was sent to BMW dealerships last week stating that the MSRP of most 2026 BMW models will go up by 1.9 percent beginning on July 1, 2025. The price increases will reportedly not affect 2025 BMW inventory. BMW has so far released pricing for many, but not all, of its 2026 model year lineup, with pricing for models such as the 7-series, X1, and 2-series not yet available. The nearly 2 percent price increase also won't affect every model in BMW's lineup. The main exceptions are its 2026-model-year EVs, the i5 and the iX. (Pricing for the 2026 i4 and i7 has not been published.) The Alpina XB7, 2026 2-series Gran Coupe, and 2026 M2 are also reportedly unaffected. BMW On the top end, the price hikes amount to $2500 for models such as the X5 M, which rises from $127,200 to $129,700, according to CarsDirect. The lowest increases are for the 4-series Coupe and Z4 roadster, which each see a bump of $1100. These figures exclude the destination fee, which Car and Driver reports as part of the price, and it's unclear if the freight charge will change for any BMW models when the calendar turns to July. CarsDirect says the bulletin doesn't blame the import tariffs implemented by the U.S. government for the price hikes, instead stating that the rises are "in line with past pricing communications, and account for inflation and enhancements to standard equipment where applicable." Slight increases in the MSRP are common for new model years, but we wouldn't be surprised if the tariffs are also playing a factor. A previous report from Automotive News stated that BMW wouldn't raise prices on imported models until the end of June. We've reached out to BMW for comment regarding these reported price increases and will update the story if we hear back. Popular tire company makes harsh cost-cutting decision amid declines

Popular tire company makes harsh cost-cutting decision amid declines originally appeared on TheStreet. When thinking about Formula 1, the world's most prestigious motor racing competition, only a few tire brands come to mind. This is because the motorsport uses a single tire supplier to ensure an even playing field for all teams, and the selected manufacturer must be exceptionally reliable and capable of meeting the sport's demanding performance standards. This popular tire company rose to stardom as Formula 1's tire supplier from 1997 to 2010, providing tires for top teams like Ferrari for many years. 💵💰 💵💰 Ultimately, the company chose to end its long-standing partnership with Formula 1 in 2010 to refocus its resources and prioritize its business, as the returns on investment no longer met even the world's largest tire and rubber company is not immune to today's economic challenges or devastating shutdowns to make ends meet. The multinational tire and rubber company Bridgestone Corp. has faced various business challenges over the last few months, including a decline in tire demand in the North American market, partly due to increased imports of low-priced tires. These bumps in the road have only grown due to U.S. tariff implementations and the uncertain economy. To mitigate the effects of these challenges, the company developed a Mid-Term Business Plan that would be enacted from 2024 to 2026. This multi-year strategy consisted of significant cost reductions and various restructurings to strengthen the company in the first quarter of fiscal 2025, once positive numbers have now flipped, total revenues declined by 1% compared to last year, and the Americas went down 3%. The company predicts more negative revenues for the rest of 2025, predicting a 2% decline compared to the year prior. Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations, the U.S. subsidiary of Bridgestone Corp. () , filed a WARN notice with the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development (TDLWD) on May 30 to inform the state that it will be permanently closing its Bridgestone facility in La Vergne, Tenn., on July 31, impacting 658 hourly and staffed workers. The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, or WARN, requires companies to give employees 60 days' notice before planned closures or mass layoffs. This filing comes months after the company made the initial announcement of the closure in January, but no filing had yet been made. More Retail News:"This decision is part of the company's strategic initiatives to optimize its business footprint, strengthen its competitiveness and enhance the quality of the company's U.S. operations," stated the company in the initial announcement. The closure reduces costs in strategic areas, allowing Bridgestone Americas to operate more efficiently and focus on value creation, which is the second part of its Mid-Term Business Plan that will take place from 2024 to 2025. Since the day the WARN notice was filed, Bridgestone Corp.'s stock has declined by over 6% as of June 4.
