Man United make opening bid for Benjamin Sesko

Manchester United have submitted an offer for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, according to German outlet BILD. United have tabled a bid worth €75 million plus an additional €10m in potential add-ons. They reportedly held informal talks with the Bundesliga club earlier in the summer transfer window. The 22-year-old has also attracted interest from Arsenal and Newcastle United. However, the Gunners have moved on after signing Viktor Gyokeres, leaving only Newcastle and Man United as active contenders. Newcastle's improved offer puts pressure on Man United Newcastle initially submitted a €75m bid including €5m in add-ons for Sesko, but Leipzig swiftly rejected it. That prompted them to return with an improved package of at least €80m. United have now stepped up their efforts with a bid of their own. Sesko had an impressive season in Germany last term, bagging 21 goals and six assists across all competitions. His growing reputation has made him one of the most sought-after young strikers this summer. The Slovenian international stands out for his size, speed, and sharp finishing. He often gets behind defences with smart runs and is a real threat in the final third. He is capable of holding up play, acting as a target man and involving his teammates in attacking moves. While he is a strong figure inside the box and a natural goal threat, his passing and link-up play are still developing. However, his blend of physical power and technique makes him an ideal fit for English football.

Florian Wirtz Reveals how Arne Slot has Already Helped his Game at Liverpool

Florian Wirtz's Liverpool Arrival Signals New Era of Creative Freedom Liverpool's record-breaking summer signing Florian Wirtz has spoken about the freedom he has been given by Arne Slot, as the club gears up for their Premier League title defence. In comments to The Times, Wirtz made it clear that while the fee could rise to a British record £116m, his focus is purely on delivering performances that justify the faith shown in him. 'I think I am a player who needs freedom on the pitch, and the manager gives it to me,' he explained. 'Of course, I have to respect the position and the players around me, but I try to give my best on the pitch and find the right places. I have the freedom for this.' Ready for Premier League Physicality Wirtz, who arrived from Bayer Leverkusen alongside compatriot Jeremie Frimpong, is under no illusions about the demands of English football. 'They tell me it's more intense and more physical, every player is really strong, really fast. That is what everybody is telling me, and I'm aware of that.' Photo: IMAGO His passing statistics from last season's Champions League underline his composure in high-pressure moments. Only Phil Foden completed passes at a higher rate when under intense opposition pressing, with Wirtz achieving an impressive 88.8% from 340 attempts. That level of precision could prove invaluable against aggressive Premier League midfields. Slot's Tactical Trust In Monday's friendly double-header against Athletic Bilbao, Wirtz featured in Slot's stronger XI and showed versatility, drifting between forward and midfield roles while also pressing into the box when Liverpool were out of possession. Such flexibility appears central to Slot's plans, especially with Trent Alexander-Arnold now at Real Madrid and Liverpool seeking new patterns of attacking play. 'I came [to Liverpool] because I thought I could fit in this team [straight away] and I am enjoying playing with these players. Every time it is getting a little bit better so I am happy with how it is going,' said Wirtz, who also praised Hugo Ekitike's early impact following his move from Eintracht Frankfurt. Title Defence Mindset Having experienced a Bundesliga title win with Leverkusen and the difficulty of retaining it, Wirtz knows the challenge ahead. 'The big challenge is to take the title again and it is the most difficult thing, so I try just to create chances and also work against the ball because I can also run a lot and I will try to bring this to the team.' Liverpool's season opens with the Community Shield against Crystal Palace, offering an early glimpse of how quickly Wirtz can translate his Bundesliga brilliance to the Premier League stage. As one rival manager put it, Wirtz is 'sensational', and his arrival could be the key to Liverpool evolving while retaining their ruthless edge. Our View – Anfield Index Analysis As Liverpool supporters, reading this report will have many of us feeling a surge of excitement. Slot has already shown he can deliver silverware in his debut season, and now he has added one of Europe's most intelligent and technically gifted young players to his squad. Wirtz's composure under pressure is the sort of quality that wins games at the very highest level, and the fact he is already linking up well with Salah, Szoboszlai and Ekitike is a huge boost before the competitive action starts.

Why the SEC can't take much pleasure from preseason US LBM Coaches Poll rankings

Nine SEC teams are ranked in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll. Think the College Football Playoff committee will care about that? They didn't last year. The SEC buried the Big Ten in the US LBM Coaches Poll. Nine SEC teams are ranked, including No. 1 Texas, compared to six ranked teams from the Big Ten. Fire up the preseason chants of superiority, but that will mean squat come College Football Playoff selection time. In fact, the SEC's poll takeover could be a sign of a playoff path filled with landmines, while Big Ten front-runners Ohio State, Penn State, Oregon and Illinois enjoy cleaner routes to the postseason. On this edition of "SEC Football Unfiltered," a podcast from the USA TODAY Network, hosts Blake Toppmeyer and John Adams react to the SEC's poll blitz and explain why this should be viewed cautiously for the conference's playoff contenders. They also point to two overrated SEC teams, plus an unranked team that they'd place in the Top 25. Should the SEC feel good about having nine ranked teams? Toppmeyer: Well, it means the SEC is at no shortage of playoff hopefuls. In addition to the SEC's nine ranked teams, the top two vote-getters outside the Top 25 also hail from the SEC. That's 11 teams within the top 27. And yet, the SEC also had nine teams ranked in last year's preseason poll, but only three made the playoff, while the Big Ten led all conferences with four qualifiers and produced the national champion for the second consecutive season. The Big Ten's cream is as sweet as the SEC's, and that's what matters most come playoff selection time. Who's got the best teams at the top? Consider the schedule for No. 17 Florida. I'm sure the Gators enjoy being ranked. It's a credit to how they finished last season playing well, and they return quarterback DJ Lagway. But, the Gators will play seven teams ranked in the preseason poll. A few SEC teams drew favorable schedules, but others like Florida might wish for more weak links within the conference. Ultimately, I don't think the SEC having more ranked teams in the preseason gives the conference any better chance of producing more playoff qualifiers than the Big Ten. Adams: It's easier to make the playoff from the Big Ten than the SEC. Just ask Indiana. This preseason poll reflects the difficulty most SEC teams can expect to encounter throughout the conference schedule. And if the committee doesn't change its tune on three-loss teams (none were selected last season), I'm not sure that it's any great advantage to have nine ranked teams from one conference. The SEC's addition of Texas and Oklahoma and elimination of divisions seems like a great formula for producing an abundance of 9-3 and 8-4 teams. That's not a great formula for the 12-team playoff.
