Uttar Pradesh faces fertiliser supply shortage amid rising demand

Even as Uttar Pradesh has a fertiliser inventory of nearly 1.5 million tonnes (MT) for the current kharif season, the supply is falling short in several administrative divisions.
The total stock comprises 918,000 tonnes of urea and 558,000 tonnes of phosphatic soil nutrients such as Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) and Nitrogen Phosphorus Potash (NPK).
However, 11 of the total 18 administrative divisions in UP are still facing a shortfall. Seven divisions, including Kanpur, Lucknow, Prayagraj, Aligarh, Agra, Varanasi and Bareilly have maximum availability of fertilisers.

Nepal to export additional 200 MW electricity to India
Agency: Kathmandu, Aug 13 (PTI) Nepal will export nearly 200 MW electricity to India in addition to the existing 940 MW, officials said, a development that will earn little more than NRs 80 billion for the Himalayan nation. This is part of the long-term agreement that Nepal signed for the export of 10,000 MW power to India over the next 10 years, most of it during the rainy season between June to November. 'The Central Electricity Authority of India on Tuesday approved the import of additional 199.70 MW electricity from Nepal to Haryana," Nepal Electricity Authority spokesperson Rajan Dhakal told PTI. The news about additional export prompted Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli to post on his social media that Nepal will earn over NRs 80.27 billion from exporting hydro-electricity to India. Earlier, India had agreed to import 941 MW electricity from Nepal and with Wednesday's approval, Nepal will now export 1,140.70 MW electricity. Nepal is currently selling its surplus electricity to Indian states of Bihar and Haryana during monsoon. 'Till now Haryana was importing 235.5 MW electricity from Nepal. With the new agreement in place, Haryana will import 435.5 MW electricity from Nepal," Dhakal added. The export will start as soon as there is a power surplus, the officials said. Nepal and India had in January 2024 signed a long-term agreement for the export of 10,000 MW power to India, from 450 MW till 2023, in the next 10 years during the 7th meeting of the Nepal-India Joint Commission here coinciding with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's visit to the Himalayan nation. Fertiliser shortage fear sparks panic buying in NTR and Krishna
VIJAYAWADA: Fearing no further supply and an alleged shortage of fertilisers in the erstwhile Krishna District, farmers are queuing up at the Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) and private shops to purchase Urea and diammonium phosphate (DAP), resorting to panic buying. Although the government is supplying urea and DAP, the panic buying has triggered tensions in villages and at PACS outlets. Long queues have been witnessed, with many farmers waiting for hours. Some arrived at PACS early in the morning to secure a bag of urea. 'I have been in the queue for the past four hours to get one bag of urea, but our Konkepudi PACS just received only 220 bags, while there are 300 members in the line. I request the government to enhance the urea supply to PACS to help farmers,' K Raghuramayya, a farmer of Pedana mandal, said. Urea, priced at Rs 266 for a 45 kg bag, contains over 46% nitrogen, which boosts paddy plant growth and yields. DAP, priced at Rs 1,350 for a 50 kg bag, is valued for promoting healthy root development and overall plant growth. Farmers are increasingly using both fertilisers, leading to a rapid rise in demand and occasional shortages at local outlets. To meet demand, district administrations in NTR and Krishna have submitted indents to the government for various fertilisers. Krishna Agriculture Joint Director Manohara Rao said supply is being made as per demand. 'Farmers are overusing urea, so shortages are likely in some areas. There is still plenty of fertiliser available,' he said.

'These townships will be developed under the UP Township Policy 2023 to provide affordable housing to the people in various districts,' a senior official said.
