Ben Shelton rises in ATP rankings for third week in a row
Shelton locked up the position by the middle of last week during the Mubadala Citi DC Open. Playing into the semifinal gives him a 185-point lead on Alex de Minaur, who won the Washington 500 and moved up five spots. Shelton is losing 190 points this week, but he should easily win them back playing in the Toronto Masters tournament this week.
Since the schedule is staggered from last year, the trick will be to make up the 190 points from the 2024 Washington 500, plus the 45 points from the Canada Masters. A return to the semifinals does the trick with 360 points; reaching the final would grant at least 600.
Shelton gets a bye in the first round of the Toronto 1000 and will play either Marcos Giron or Adrian Mannarino, who reached through the qualifiers. Assuming he makes it through to the Round of 32, another meeting with Brandon Nakashima appears likely. Shelton is 4-0 against Nakashima in head-to-head matchups.
With a 96-player draw, it's a bit difficult to predict further down the bracket, but potential matchups with Flavio Cobolli, Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe and Alexander Zverev exist. Stay tuned with Gators Wire for recaps throughout the week.

Popyrin pushed to limit to make Canada quarter-finals
Australia's Alexei Popyrin remains on track for back-to-back Canadian Open titles after fighting his way to a three-set win over fifth seed Holger Rune. For the second match in a row in Toronto, 18th-seeded Popyrin had to claw his way back after losing the first set, beating the talented Dane 4-6 6-2 6-3 on Saturday (local time). Popyrin has his sights set on back-to-back Canadian Open titles after thrashing Russia's Andrey Rublev 6-2 6-4 in last year's final. In the quarter-finals, Popyrin faces top-seeded Alexander Zverev, who advanced after the No.14 seed Francisco Cerundolo, of Argentina, was forced to retire with an abdominal injury with the German leading 6-4 1-0. Zverev, the 2017 Canadian Open champion who is ranked third in the world, ended up the top seed in Toronto after the world's top top-ranked players Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz skipped the event. Another Australian, ninth-seeded Alex de Minaur, plays his round-of-16 clash against American Frances Tiafoe on Sunday (Monday AEST). De Minaur came to Canada in impeccable form, having won last week's Washington Open, his 10th career title. The fleet-footed Aussie will be hoping to continue his dazzling recent form at the year's final major, the US Open, which starts in New York on August 24. De Minaur has twice reached the quarter-finals at the hard-court event at Flushing Meadows, firstly in 2021, then repeating that effort last year. Khachanov downs Ruud to book ATP Toronto clash with Michelsen
Karen Khachanov reached his second straight prestige quarter-final on Saturday, ambushing eighth seed Casper Ruud 6-4, 7-5 to continue his ATP hot streak at the Toronto Masters. Khachanov will bid for a quarter-final berth at the US Open tuneup against Alex Michelsen, who claimed his first Masters last-eight place with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over fellow American and good friend Learner Tien. Khachanov was playing his first tournament since reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals last month. The world number 16 reeled off 18 straight points on serve over the first and second sets and produced love games in his final two service games of the match. Norway's Ruud, playing his second event after skipping Wimbledon because of injury, was never able to gain control, although he rallied from 4-2 down in the second set to level at 4-4 before Khachanov got back on track. "I had nothing to complain about until this point," said Khachanov, who notched his first win of the season over a top-20 player. "I tried to control play and my game plan was working, especially with the first serves. "It became difficult, but I'm super-glad I was able to put everything together at the end and finish the match." Michelsen took full advantage of 42 unforced errors from Tien to close out their match in 81 minutes. "It feels really good," the 20-year-old winner said. "It's uncharted territory from now on. I'm super-happy to be in the quarters." Michelsen said that despite the raft of errors from Tien he had to take care with his own forehand to claim the victory. Taylor Fritz beats Canadian Gabriel Diallo in Toronto in 3rd round of National Bank Open
TORONTO (AP) — Second-seeded Taylor Fritz of the United States beat 6-foot-8 Canadian Gabriel Diallo 6-4, 6-2 on Friday night in the third round of the National Bank Open. Fritz set up a fourth-round match in the hard-court event with 19th-seeded Jiri Lehecka of Czechia. Lehecka beat 15th-seeded Arthur Fils of France 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The 27-year-old Fritz is No. 4 in the world. He has 10 career ATP Tour titles, winning this year on grass at Eastbourne and Stuttgart. In the afternoon, sixth-seeded Andrey Rublev of Russia beat Lorenzo Sonego of Italy 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. Rublev will face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain, a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Czech Jakub Mensik. 'In the second and third sets, I was able to play more aggressive, fewer mistakes,' Rublev said. 'Let's see what's happening next, I'm super excited and motivated.'
