Readers of North Wales Live have been actively debating the recent shift in police policy around the acceptance of dashcam footage. A digital portal permits public contributions of evidence concerning traffic violations.
Operation Snap – spearheaded by road safety unit GoSafe – has established a digital platform that encourages the submission of video recordings showing traffic offences. Amongst the most reported misdeeds are reckless driving and perilously close overtakes of cyclists, together with incidents of jumping red lights.
The initiative has been hailed as a "valuable tool" for clamping down on motorists. As more individuals employ dashcams and helmet-cams, submissions to the portal have risen sharply.
From 2021 to 2023, there was a twofold increase in submitted footage, this spike has prompted GoSafe to announce an immediate change to the handling of submissions while a comprehensive review is underway.
This adjustment will not impact the processing of "serious" incidents flagged by the public. However, there will be a new approach when minor infractions are reported to the police.
Until now, these minor concerns resulted in warning letters sent out to offenders. This procedure will stop until the review establishes a long-term strategy.
MickHookem states: "Why not just drive safely and lawfully? Unless you've got something to hide, of course."
TheGreyMullet writes: "Shame. Surely it's better to be proactive in modifying behaviour to avoid serious accidents rather than just being reactive after they happen. Lives already likely ruined at that point."
Ofcourseitis adds: "There are an element of people who deliberately go out of their way to cause and entrap unsuspecting motorists with their vigilante operations, its good to see the police taking a sensible stance and only dealing with the most serious of cases."
Msdt believes: "Another excuse for the police to stay in their offices instead of being out there!"
Cooperman1927 says: "I have a dash cam and could make it a full time job sending evidence of bad driving but I would rather have a better hobby."
Tdhprestatyn comments: "A country where citizens spy and report each other. What an awful practice and place. So glad I left 11 years ago. Looking from outside in, Wales is descending into a socialist state. I don't even stay in Wales now to visit family, just stay across the border and drive (very slowly) in."
Vaux08hall writes: "If the police are overwhelmed with the number being sent in then it only proves how bad the standard of driving is in Wales, it also coincides with the 20mph being introduced."
Ofcourseitis replies: "The police are overwhelmed because the speed laws in Wales are unfit for purpose so most people ignore them and the vigilante busy bodies get to work with their secret filming and snitching."
Thesheaperd questions: "So let me get this straight - the Police are saying they are going to ignore people breaking the law if they think it is not important enough, who decides if it is important enough? This is why we have laws to begin with, the state of the UK is going down the drain."
Statistix answers: "It may just be a case of those who love to complain, but only if they can remain anonymous, have been given free reign and a pat on the back up until now."
AlbertKelly adds: "You could always try driving safely so you don't have anything to worry about."

Couple's 'great idea' for dog exercise facility wins unanimous support

A "great idea" by a young Llangernyw couple to turn a farm field into a private dog exercise facility has won unanimous council support. Dewi and Iola Roberts had applied to Conwy planners for a change of use of a small agricultural field northeast of their property, Plas yn Trofarth. The enterprise would see grazing land turned into a secure dog exercise field, complete with a small shelter, dedicated parking area, and landscaping works. Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox. The facility would operate daily between 6am and 10pm, closing at 8pm, on Sundays and bank holidays, and would be accessible by pre-booked sessions. Each 50-minute slot would allow use by up to two dog owners at a time, with access managed by a weekly code-lock system. The plans also included parking space for up to three vehicles, new boundary fencing around the site, and a 2.4m timber shelter for users. Fencing would also surround the proposed parking and turning area, where there would be a new access gate for patrons, and another access gate for a tractor. Planners had felt the development was "not expected to be detrimental to the visual amenity" of the locality and a report noted the scheme "satisfactorily integrates into the landscape". Planning officers had felt the site was 'well screened' by existing trees and shrubbery, with the nearest dwelling over 100m away, and most others more than a kilometre. While situated within the Elwy and Aled Valley Special Landscape Area, the site was also considered "too small for viable agriculture". Due to the applicants' relationship with a serving councillor, the proposal has been brought before the planning committee for transparency. Public speaker planning consultant Jack Lally said the scheme was "a modest farm diversification," seeking to make use of a small parcel of agricultural grazing land. "There is a clear local demand for this facility which would serve both local residents and visitors of nearby tourism businesses," he said. "This scheme will help to sustain viability and secure a sustainable future of a rural enterprise at Plas yn Trofarth." Planning officer Ceri Thomas told the meeting that the site plan had been amended. This had come after officers had noted the presence of a nearby watercourse and a potential flood risk. It came after NRW had requested that a fence be relocated out of a flood zone, and away from the watercourse. This had been demonstrated in a newly submitted drawing, which saw no further objection. Planning officers had recommended that members be "minded to grant" conditional approval, and to authorise the development and building control manager to determine the application under delegation. Cllr Jo Nuttall proposed accepting the proposal, saying it was "much needed" and a "great idea by a young couple," and it was seconded by Cllr Gwennol Ellis. The plan was unanimously approved. More info A huge pile of waste has been dumped in a layby beside the A494. Natural Resources Wales [NRW] is investigating after the pile, which contains plastics, wood and metal, was spotted alongside the road today [Thursday, August 14]. NRW said the waste was "trommel fines" which are the small, fine particles that pass through the rotating cylindrical screen known as a trommel. A trommel screen is used to separate larger materials from smaller ones during the waste sorting and recycling process. The agency said the "large illegal waste deposit" was spotted today in Llanferres, Denbighshire. A spokesperson said: "Our initial checks suggest this happened b etween 10pm yesterday (Wed 13 Aug) and 6am today, likely involving a lorry.
