
Arrowtown's feast finds its feet
The Arrowtown Long Table is officially back on the calendar.
Formerly managed by the Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association, You Gather Events' Laura and Campbell Ross last year took ownership of the long-standing event, first held in 2010.
Given the challenges the event faced due to rising costs associated with consents and infrastructure, the couple, who also run the Arrowtown Gin Festival, cancelled last year's event.
But Campbell tells Mountain Scene it's "all go" this year, and making its rebranded comeback on December 5.
While they've lost some restaurants — Provisions, The Fork and Tap and Bendix Stables — they've added Swiftsure, Little Aosta and Royalburn in association with Queenstown Catering, while Smoke and Pickle will also be operating from the Athenaeum Hall, "just so we can cater for everyone's budgets as well".
Campbell says they're looking at capacity of between 600 and 700, once again spread down the length of Buckingham St, but this year without some of the fencing which was required to pen guests in during the 2023 event, instead increasing security.
"We've had our meetings with the council, which has been great and successful and they're on the same page, thankfully."
Campbell says they took onboard feedback from the last event and have been given the green light to use "proper glass" this year, instead of plastic wine glasses.
And, in more good news, the ticket prices will drop.
"It used to be $80 and we've dropped it down to about $67.
"That certainly helps the budget, and hopefully makes more people come along.
"We've got some awesome new partners involved in terms of alcohol [Peroni Nasto Assuro, Aperol Spritz and wine partner Kinross], and some good entertainment lined up for the main street, too."
He expects the full restaurant lineup will be released around early-August, via arrowtownlongtable.co.nz, with tickets going on sale at the end of next month.

Dippie steps down as chairman of tourism giant

Prominent Otago businessman Martin Dippie's stepping down after three years at the helm — the company owns Queenstown's iconic steamship TSS Earnslaw, Walter Peak Farm, Cardrona and Treble Cone skifields and Milford and Doubtful Sound coaches and cruises, among other attractions. "Three years is a good period for me," he says, having last year also stood down as chair of the Mitre 10 retail cooperative and from the Otago University Council. "I really enjoyed being part of the team, but I'm a busy guy — [it's] amazing how three years went past in a jiffy." Dippie says he's looking forward to having more time for himself — "and we're doing a lot of endurance rallying and our kids are overseas". In 2022, Dippie along with main investor Milford Asset Management, Queenstown's Rod Drury, Jonty Edgar and Brendan Lindsay poured tens of millions of dollars into RealNZ to shore up its balance sheet and allow investment in technology, innovation and sustainability. However the Hutchins family, who founded the company 71 years ago, remained the majority shareholder. Dippie pays special credit to the Hutchins family — "there's not many businesses, particularly family businesses, that can get to that age". He says "the business is in great heart". "I can't speak highly enough about the business and the people — it's a business with a real warm heart." Rebuild steering group put together

PHOTO: ODT FILES Four community members will join a councillor and a community board member on the steering committee to rebuild the Roxburgh Entertainment Centre, which was destroyed in a spectacular blaze on Waitangi Day. At Thursday's Teviot Valley Community Board meeting in Roxburgh, chairman Norman Dalley said 11 people had put themselves forward for four external stakeholder places on the steering group. The board had discussed the options before the meeting and were happy with the four selected. "We believe they have the skill set that will benefit the community," Mr Dalley said. The four were businesswoman Sally Smith, teacher Sarah More, musician Alistair Monteath, and businessman and volunteer firefighter David Weatherall. The Central Otago District Council has nominated councillor Martin McPherson as the council representative on the steering group, and Teviot Valley board member Curtis Pannett would represent the board. Council property officer Tara Bates presented a report to the meeting on the rebuild. While there was no budget for the rebuild, the insurance payout was expected to fund the construction of a new entertainment centre, the report said. Any additional budget would require council approval, Ms Bates said. Council property and facilities manager Garreth Robinson said the steering group would be the conduit of information to the community. The biggest stakeholders in the entertainment centre would be engaged in the design process, Mr Robinson said. Council community experience manager David Scoones said, for example, the Roxburgh entertainment centre improvement and promotions group, which operated the cinema in the building, would be directly involved with the steering group and design team to put across everything they would want in the new building. Other groups would have focused workshops and sessions, with all information going to the steering group to understand how it would all work together. Mr Robinson said he recommended community drop-in sessions once concept designs were available. That had worked well in Cromwell, with the designer of its new hall using virtual reality to allow people to "walk through" the planned spaces. Mr Dalley said it was important the steering group was able to make decisions on behalf of the community using the feedback they received.

Award-winning holiday park sold to overseas investor for unknown amount
Wānaka's Top 10 Holiday Park. PHOTO: ODT FILES Wānaka's award-winning Top 10 Holiday Park has been sold to an overseas-based joint venture, which intends to maintain its current use. Overseas Investment Act decisions released yesterday show Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand has granted consent to Tasman Tourism New Zealand Ltd to acquire a freehold interest in about 3ha of land in Studholme Rd. The applicant is a joint venture between an Australian private equity firm with experience in the holiday park industry and an investment company based in the United Arab Emirates. It owns and operates holiday parks in New Zealand, including Te Anau, under the Tasman Holiday Parks brand. The Wānaka park, which won the supreme award at the Top 10 national awards in 2022, was sold by Andrew and Andrea Kendrick and the purchase price was withheld. ■ A forestry investment company has been granted consent to acquire freehold interests in 641.1ha of land in Cameron Rd, Waipahi, and a further 3182.03ha in Otago and Southland for undisclosed sums. Anzlaff NZ Ltd was established and is managed by New Forests Asset Management Pty Ltd for investing in plantation forestry in New Zealand and specific parts of Australia. It is owned by 14 overseas institutional investor entities. Companies managed by New Forests Asset Management Pty Ltd have previously made several forestry investments around New Zealand. The Waipahi property, which was owned by JEB Farming, comprises about 641ha of freehold land. The total productive area is about 548ha of majority Pinus radiata and a small amount of Cupressus macrocarpa and eucalyptus. The applicant plans to continue using the land for production forestry with harvesting planned for 2053. The larger swathe of land totals about 3200ha of freehold land comprising nine forestry estates, which will also continue to be used for production forestry. The total productive area of the property is about 2651ha of mostly Pinus radiata and a small amount of Douglas fir. The land was marketed together in a joint sale commissioned by the vendors — NZP Forestry Ltd Partnership, All In Forestry Ltd, Harbour View Forest Ltd Partnership, Katea Ltd Partnership, Longview Farm (Otago) Ltd, NZ Timber No 1 Ltd Partnership and Treebilly Holdings Ltd — which share some common investors and engage the same forest manager.
