TNA President Carlos Silva Reacts To Speculation About AJ Styles' Slammiversary Status
Earlier this week, TNA President Carlos Silva announced that the promotion was adding more seats at its Slammiversary pay-per-view on Long Island this weekend. Silva made the announcement on X/Twitter and said that fans should trust him when he says it will be a 'PHENOMENAL' night.
Fans immediately speculated that Silva was hinting at 'Phenomenal' AJ Styles being involved in the show. Styles has used that moniker for years, and he's arguably one of the most decorated pro wrestlers to ever work in TNA. WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard recently spoke with Silva to promote Slammiversary and asked about the Tweet in question. Was the phrasing intentional, and would he like to expand on his initial statement?

'Really nothing more than what's in the Tweet. It's going to be a phenomenal night, and yeah, there's someone, as you know, 'Phenomenal' is a big part of their walkout. We think it's going to be a phenomenal night and see how it goes, but it's exciting,' Silva said.
'[AJ Styles] has been such a foundational, historical wrestler that has made TNA what it is today. And now he's such a big Superstar in WWE. So, we opened up some seats, we're going to expand the floor a little bit. We're bumping up against what we could do,' he continued. 'I think we added something like 700 seats on the floor with a small change that the operational team made. So we just wanted to get that out there and let people know it's going to be a phenomenal night.'
TNA would like to return to the UBS Arena
Silva went on to praise the UBS Arena for their help in making sure Slammiversary is as big as possible. Tickets are selling well, and they have opened more seats. Silva was asked if TNA is looking at larger-scale arenas for bigger events like Bound For Glory. In response, he said Slammiversary will set the tone for how the promotion books venues into 2026.
'I think as we look at all of our pay-per-views and our big shows, we have to be thinking about how Slammiversary accelerates the presence and the venues that TNA goes into. We've already been in some great cities this year; LA was a great show, we just had a great show in Pittsburgh. New York is New York, it's the greatest city,' Silva said. 'The partnership with UBS Arena, John Ledecky, the owner of the Islanders has been great to work with.
'We'd love to keep going back to UBS Arena, but like anything, that's on TNA. That's on our staff and our athletes to perform great on Sunday night,' he added. 'I think if it comes off [well] and we have the biggest show we've ever had — which I think is going to happen. We really hope that we'll be coming back to UBS Arena and other arenas like it into the fall, and certainly into 2026 as we lay out that schedule.'

Lakers shockingly waive center amid roster reshuffling following Marcus Smart deal

The move follows an announcement that Los Angeles will sign center Christian Koloko and forward Chris Manon to two-way contracts. The front office opted to open up their third two-way spot by waiving Jemison III. The big man appeared in 22 games for the Lakers in 2024-25. He averaged 2.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, 0.3 assists, 0.1 steals and 0.4 blocks in 10.3 minutes per game while shooting 61.9% from the field. It is unclear how Los Angeles plans to use their third two-way contract, however, some believe they could opt to sign Cole Swider to a deal after his strong showing in the Summer League. In five games, he averaged 17.6 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 1.6 apg, 1.2 spg and 0.2 bpg while shooting 45.5% from the field and 40.9% from three-point range.

Bob Hammel, legendary Indiana sports writer and friend of Bob Knight, dies at 88
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Bob Hammel, who covered 23 NCAA Final Fours and 29 Indiana high school basketball tournament championships during a 52-year sports writing career that included a close friendship with late Hall of Fame coach Bob Knight, has died. He was 88. Hammel died Sunday at Bell Trace, a senior living community in Bloomington, according to an obituary in The Herald-Times, his longtime employer. No cause of death was given. The lifelong Indiana resident spent 40 years with the Bloomington Herald-Telephone and later Herald-Times, including 30 as sports editor. Hammel was a member of several halls of fame, including the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, Football Writers Association of America, Indiana Journalism and Indiana University Athletics. He served terms as president of the Basketball and Football Writers associations. He received the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Bert McGrane Award from the Football Writers Association. Hammel won the Indiana Sportswriter of the Year award 21 times. He authored or co-authored 14 books, including the 2002 autobiography of Knight, the fiery IU basketball coach who died in 2023. They also teamed in 2012 for a book titled 'The Power of Negative Thinking.' Upon retiring as Big Ten Conference commissioner in 2020, Jim Delany said, "Bob Hammel is simply the most important Big Ten writer in the last 50 years.' Hammel, a native of Huntington, Indiana, attended Indiana University for a year. He took a summer job as sports editor of his hometown paper and instead of returning to school that fall, he stayed on at the paper for eight years. He worked at papers in Peru, Fort Wayne, Kokomo and Indianapolis before being hired as sports editor of the Herald-Telephone in 1966. His career included covering five Olympics before he retired from sports writing in 1996. Judge reduces bail for Memphis guard Sincere Parker in domestic assault case
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Memphis guard Sincere Parker's bail was cut nearly in half Monday, two days after he was charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend. Shelby County General Sessions Criminal Court Judge Greg Gilbert reduced Parker's bail from $120,000 to $75,000. Parker's attorney, Arthur Horne, told reporters that the bond had been posted. Parker is due back in court on July 29. He must remain at least 100 feet from his ex-girlfriend. She told police that the attack occurred on May 27 at the Memphis apartment the couple shared. She reported that Parker pushed her, slapped her in the face and choked her, leaving her bruised and bloodied, according to a police report. The woman also told police that Parker, 23, broke her cellphone because he didn't want her to have the digital key to the apartment. Horne told reporters that the incident was captured on a video call between Parker and his mother, 'which is fortunate for us and fortunate for our defense.' 'We plan on fighting this,' Horne said. 'This has been a long, ongoing saga between him and the ex-girlfriend. I just hope the public will give us time to sort through it so the whole story does come out because there are two sides to this. Right now, it looks like my client, Mr. Parker, is a woman-abuser, and that's not the case.' Horne said he believed the Memphis athletic department is waiting to see how the case unfolds before deciding whether to take action. Parker transferred to Memphis after averaging 12.2 points last season for McNeese, helping the Cowboys and coach Will Wade reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
