Amazon settles State Farm lawsuit alleging it stole elder care technology

June 5 (Reuters) - Amazon (AMZN.O), opens new tab has settled a lawsuit by insurance company State Farm accusing the e-commerce giant of copying its patented technology to develop elder care services for Amazon's virtual assistant Alexa, according to a filing in Delaware federal court. The companies asked the court, opens new tab on Wednesday to dismiss the case with prejudice, which means it cannot be refiled. State Farm said in a statement on Thursday that the case had been settled under confidential terms. Spokespersons and attorneys for Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Thursday. Bloomington, Illinois-based State Farm sued Amazon in 2022, in what the insurance company said was its first-ever patent infringement lawsuit. According to the complaint, State Farm met with Amazon in 2019 and 2020 about incorporating its Sundial senior-care assistance technology into Alexa-enabled devices. The lawsuit had accused Amazon of copying patented Sundial features, including its "circle of friends" for coordinating caregiver responsibilities, a chatbot for seniors to interact with the platform, and check-in and monitoring services. Amazon had denied the allegations and argued that the patents were invalid. The case is State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. v. Inc, U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, No. 1:22-cv-01447. Shoppers save 39% on 50-inch LG TV with 'fantastic picture quality'

Many of us enjoy snuggling down at night to get in a few episodes of our latest binge watch before heading to bed. While laptops, tablets and phones do provide an adequate experience for catching up on any episodes you have missed, nothing beats sitting in front of the telly and soaking in the bigger screen. One of the most frustrating moments, however, is when your TV eventually gives up the ghost and you now need to splurge on a new TV. Thankfully, for those looking for a new TV or are upgrading an older model, Amazon has dropped the price of a high quality smart TV. The LG 50-inch 4K UHD Smart TV usually retails for £399.99, however shoppers can now snap it up for £242. Saving customers £158 on their purchase, shoppers will be able to access all their favourite channels and streaming services with a touch of a button. For those who want to elevate their viewing experience, this LG TV comes with 4K Ultra HD and an AI sound experience to provide users with a vibrant picture quality and enhanced sound to create an immersive experience for every show. Including LG's webOS smart platform, shoppers will be able access all their favourite apps such as Now, Netflix, Disney+, Twitch and Prime Video. The system also has a quick card feature which makes it easier for someone to find something to watch based on their interests. Along with being powered by the latest 5 AI Processors, shoppers can choose to watch their favourite films and TV shows in Filmmaker mode, which applies settings to the screen that will allow users to watch their shows the way the director intended. Another smart TV reduced on Amazon is the TCL 50-inch 4K Ultra HD. Normally retailing for £326, shoppers can snap up this popular TV for £249. This device comes with Fire TV built-in, which lets shoppers access all their favourite streaming and catch up apps in one place. With Alexa included, this TV also features Dolby Vision and Atmos. Alternatively, Argo is selling the Bush 65 Inch 4K UHD HDR LED TiVo Freely TV for their 'lowest price ever'. Retailing for £319, this TV is said to provide an immersive experience with enhanced picture quality and cinematic sound, courtesy of Dolby Vision-Atmos and DTS HD. Back to the 50-inch LG TV, Amazon shoppers have given this TV a 4.3 star rating, with over 300 shoppers buying the device in the last month. As one of the retailer's top choices, shoppers may need to be quick to buy this device as it is unknown when the price will shoot back up. One happy shopper said: "We purchased this TV to be installed in a small meeting room and we are fully satisfied of the results. Tested in 4K absolutely brilliant. Really great value for money!" Another five-star reviewer added: "Looks good, picture clear colours true, sounds good easy to set up which for me was a relief as I'm not that tech savvy for price great value." However, one shopper wasn't happy with the sound quality of the TV, writing: "The only quibble is that the speakers on this are really harsh and loud, despite changing the sound settings. The treble bites and carries around the house. "I am considering going to the additional expense of buying a sound bar to get a more acceptable sound quality. Sky TV remote will not control the volume of the TV, you have to use the remote for the TV." Another shopper added: "Bought this to mount on our bedroom wall. Power lead way too short and no way of swapping it for a longer one. Sent back for a refund. Why not just use a normal power lead like others do so you can just buy a longer one if needed." On the flip side, a customer praised: "Fantastic value. Came extremely well packaged. Fantastic quality picture for the money. Ignore the negative reviews regarding damaged screens on arrival etc.... recommend this item 100 percent. Set-up dead easy." A fourth delighted shopper commented: "The size is great and the picture quality is excellent! It was really easy to set up as well and easy to use. Sound is good. Great value for money as I really think LG is exceptional in terms of quality, longevity, and good functionality." To buy the LG 50-inch 4K UHD Smart TV, click HERE.

Fire TV Stick users urged to check device as popular streaming app gets removed today

Some Fire TV Stick users may be inclined to upgrade their device as Netflix becomes blocked on certain devices. Fire TV Sticks are an affordable way for people to have access to all their favourite streaming apps on their TV without having to splurge on a Smart TV. Including Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV, as well as your catch up apps, this nifty device allows users to enjoy their latest binge watch with ease. However, some Fire TV Stick users may want to upgrade their devices as one of the most popular streaming services is set to disappear today (June 3). It was rumoured last month that Netflix would no longer be accessible on certain devices, but the news is now official. Amazon confirmed the block in a statement, saying: "Netflix will be discontinuing support for some first-generation Fire TV devices, which were introduced more than 10 years ago." The vast majority of Fire Stick users won't need to worry about this update as it is only the Amazon Fire TV Stick (2014), Amazon Fire TV Stick with Alexa voice remote (2014) or Amazon Fire TV (2014) that are affected by the change on June 3. However, for those who do use this device to stream the latest Netflix films and psychological thrillers, you may want to invest in a newer model. It is not entirely clear why the block has been put in place, but it seems to have something to do with a technology called AV1 codec, reports the Express. This technology allows streaming services such as Netflix to offer higher quality resolution which is not supported on the older Fire TV Sticks. However, this better quality does mean shoppers need to spend more on their monthly subscription. This means that users of older devices who pay for the premium service would be paying more for a service they can't access. As such, Netflix may have felt it was an easier option just to remove the app altogether. For those worried that they are affected by the update, you can check what device you own by going to Settings, then go to My Fire TV. From there all the information you need should be in the About your Fire TV section. The devices Netflix will become blocked from this week are: Amazon Fire TV Stick (2014) Amazon Fire TV Stick with Alexa voice remote (2014) Amazon Fire TV (2014). However, Amazon did also confirm: "Netflix remains available on all other Fire TV devices." Amazon is currently selling the most up to date versions of the Fire TV Sticks, which provide viewing experiences in HD and 4K clarity, as well as access to Netflix. The basic and cheapest device available is the Amazon Fire TV Stick HD for £39.99. This device lets you stream all your favourite streaming services and live TV in full HD and it also comes with an Alexa function to make your searching easier. The next level up is the Fire TV Stick 4K which retails for £59.99. If you are looking for a device with all the bells and whistles, then this is the choice for you. With 4K support along with Wi-Fi 6 compatibility, this Fire Stick also comes with Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and HDR10+ support for a superb viewing experience. The most expensive device in the Amazon range is the Fire TV Stick 4K Max. Selling for £69.99, this Max device is the only device with the official Xbox app. This high end Fire Stick also comes with Wi-Fi 6E as well as Amazon's new Fire TV Ambient Experience which will make you feel like you are in a museum.
