Celtic eyeing new Sweden sensation as Brendan Rodgers plots cut-price transfer
It's a long term interest - but other foreign clubs are circling
CELTIC are eyeing a move for Sweden star Benjamin Nygren.
SunSport understands the Nordsjaelland playmaker is on Brendan Rodgers' radar as he looks to boost his squad.

But the Hoops face competition from the likes of Anderlecht and Copenhagen for the 23-year-old.
Nygren is out of contract in six months and could be available for a cut-price £2million fee.
He recently broke into the Sweden team after a standout season with Nordsjaelland in Denmark.
Nygren scored 16 goals and claimed four assists - earning a senior international chance.

And he already has two goals in four caps, including a wonder strike against Hungary last week.
Danish sources claim Celtic have scouted Nygren in recent months as interest mounts.
The gifted attacker has excelled in the No10 position for his club - but can also play off the wing or up front.
Nygren has confirmed he won't extend his Nordsjaelland contract beyond the end of this year.

And the Danes are now likely to cash in on him in this transfer window - instead of losing him for nothing in January.
Nygren came through the ranks at IFK Gothenburg before making a £3m move to Belgian side Genk in 2019 - aged just 17.

A star of the Swedish youth teams, he was tipped as one of his country's next big things.
But Nygren struggled to make an impact at Genk and was loaned to Dutch club Heerenveen before joining Nordsjaelland in 2022.

The attacker has blossomed in Denmark and is now poised to make the next step in his career.
Celtic boss Rodgers is looking to bolster several areas of his squad and Nygren would add creativity.
He fits the profile the Hoops normally look for and would give him a platform to develop.
Yet there is growing interest in the Swede after he broke into the national team due to his outstanding club form.

Nygren scored against Hungary and then started Tuesday's 4-3 win over Algeria.

Anderlecht are keen to take him back to Belgium, but Copenhagen also want to nab him from their Superliga rivals.
Celtic are ramping up their transfer activity - with Kieran Tierney confirmed on a five-year deal this week.

The Hoops are also set to bring in Aberdeen keeper Ross Doohan, while Fulham kid Callum Osmand has agreed terms.
Rodgers will look to strengthen various areas and is also chasing more options in the wide areas - with Jota potentially out until 2026.
Antwerp's Michel-Ange Balikwisha has been a long-term target and Celtic now have to decide whether to follow that up with a formal bid.
Anderlecht's Nilson Angulo has been watched, as has Sarpsborg's Sondre Orjasaeter and Raul Moro of Real Valladolid
There will also be outgoings - with the likes of Gustaf Lagerbielke and Luis Palma expected to leave permanently.

Greg Taylor seems destined to quit Celtic on a free, while talk of a Jeffrey Schlupp return has gone quiet.
Rodgers admits he also expects big-money bids for stars like Daizen Maeda in this window.
But the Celtic boss still hopes to tie down the Japanese ace on a new deal.

Thomas Frank appointed Tottenham boss on three-year deal
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy moved swiftly for former Brentford boss Frank after they dismissed Ange Postecoglou only 16 days on from Europa League glory. Following negotiations with Brentford during the past week over Frank's release clause and backroom staff, the 51-year-old has been announced as Tottenham head coach and will bring with him Justin Cochrane, who will return to the club where he started his coaching journey more than a decade ago. We are delighted to announce the appointment of Thomas Frank as our new Head Coach on a contract that runs until 2028. Welcome, Thomas! 🤍 — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) June 12, 2025 A club statement read: 'We are delighted to announce the appointment of Thomas Frank as our new head coach on a contract that runs until 2028. 'In Thomas we are appointing one of the most progressive and innovative head coaches within the game. He has a proven track record in player and squad development and we look forward to him leading the team as we prepare for the season ahead.' Frank is the 14th permanent head coach of Daniel Levy's 24-year tenure as Spurs chairman and will take over a club which won the Europa League last month but finished 17th in the Premier League. Tottenham's first trophy since 2008 did not prevent Postecoglou losing his job, with a statement last Friday citing it as 'one of the toughest decisions' the board has made. A club record in the Premier League of 22 defeats ultimately cost Postecoglou, even though he faced a winter injury crisis and prioritised Europa League success over league fixtures during the latter months of the season. Ange Postecoglou, left, embraces Thomas Frank before February's Premier League clash between Tottenham and Brentford (John Walton/PA) Postecoglou's dismissal sparked a flurry of tributes from Spurs players and Frank's initial task in north London will be to stabilise a shocked dressing room. However, the Danish coach has gained a reputation for excellent man-management skills during his impressive seven-year spell in charge of Brentford, where he won 136 of his 317 matches as head coach. 'It has been a pleasure working alongside Thomas,' Brentford director of football Phil Giles said. 'There have been so many special moments with Thomas and nobody will ever forget the day at Wembley for the play-off final or that emotional first Premier League game against Arsenal. 'We will never forget Thomas, but now it is time to thank him and take the next steps in our journey with a new leader who we believe can be just as successful and influential.' Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna is the bookmakers' favourite to replace Frank at Brentford. After a rocky start, Frank turned Brentford into one of the most entertaining teams in the Championship and clinched play-off success at Wembley in 2021 – despite the departures of Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma. Ex-Brondby boss Frank showed his supreme adaptability once in the top flight as his previously free-scoring side switched to a disciplined and organised unit, which frequently changed between a 4-3-3 and a 3-5-2 system. It enabled Frank to establish Brentford as a Premier League regular despite a modest budget and even the loss of Ivan Toney last summer failed to halt their momentum. During the 2024-25 campaign, Brentford recorded their best tally of top-flight wins (16) and goals (66) to secure a 10th-placed finish which further caught the attention of Tottenham. Justin Cochrane, left, is among the coaches moving from Brentford along with Frank (Andrew Matthews/PA) An official approach from Spurs was made on Monday before negotiations concluded on Thursday after an agreement had been reached over Frank's release clause – reported to be in the region of £10m – and his backroom staff. Frank has brought Cochrane with him to Tottenham along with Chris Haslam, previously Brentford's head of athletic performance, and first-team analyst Joe Newton. This move will also reunite Frank with Andreas Georgson, who spent a year at Brentford as a set-piece coach and now moves from Manchester United to Spurs, and technical director Johan Lange, who worked with Frank at Lyngby in their native Denmark and tried to bring him to Aston Villa in 2022. Even though Frank has failed to win any major silverware, he can change that when he manages Spurs for the first time competitively on August 13 in the UEFA Super Cup against Champions League winners Paris St Germain. Later on Thursday night, Tottenham centre-back Cristian Romero sent out a cryptic post on Instagram, saying: 'Ange, thank you for these two incredible seasons. 'From day one you paved the way despite the many obstacles that always existed and always will exist. 'Beyond everything, we won a trophy and went down in the history of this beautiful club, which is the only thing that matters. I wish you the best because you deserve the best, and thank you for everything.'

How ‘frightening' Liverpool may have found Mo Salah replacement and who gets Viktor Gyokeres

SunSport exclusively revealed that Bradley Barcola is on Liverpool's radar in a blockbuster move. Our very own Will Pugh and Dean Scoggins share their thoughts on all the deals and speculation in The Sun's new show Transfers Exposed. 'Be afraid of Liverpool' The Reds are prepared to battle Bayern Munich for the £100m-rated winger Barcola, 22. Liverpool have also not given up on signing Alexander Isak from Newcastle - though if the Toon stick to their £150m price tag - Barcola will be the alternative. Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are PSG's first choice front three. It means Barcola could want out - especially with a World Cup on the horizon. Arne Slot is building a versatile group of attackers that can play anywhere along the front in Salah, £126m man Florian Wirtz, Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz. A statement summer from Liverpool is coming with Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez expected to be their new flying full-backs. 7 Gyok to go Sporting's president Frederico Varandas has furiously hit back at Victor Gyokeres saying: "Threats and blackmail don't work." Reports from Lisbon claim the Swedish striker is considering going on strike to force an exit. Gyokeres, 27, is furious with Sporting for going back on their word over a transfer promise to him. He believes he had a gentleman's agreement to leave for £50million with a further £8million in add-ons. That claim has been rubbished by Varandas and good on Sporting for standing firm with their price. They know a sale is coming but will not be bullied into cashing-in on the cheap. Gyokeres will likely have the choice between Man Utd and Arsenal. And there should not be concern about Gyokeres' fit for the Premier League should it be a move to Old Trafford or the Emirates. 7 Viktor Gyokeres is considering going on strike to leave Sporting Credit: Getty Ruben Amorim believes he can produce one touch finishes and be a big enough physical presence in leading the line - they did effectively together at Sporting. As for Arsenal, they just need someone with a proven track record of putting the ball in the back of the net. 97 goals in 102 Sporting games suggests Gyokeres can do that. If the Gunners can add a top-quality left-winger to their squad as well, a move to North London would be the smarter choice over the circus in Manchester. Gyokeres deserves a Premier League chance. But don't expect Erling Haaland numbers straight away. The Greal Deal A changing of the guard is happening at Man City after the signings of Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Tijjani Reijnders. Cherki, 21, will get fans off their seats and the ex-Lyon man will be the wildcard Pep Guardiola has been missing. 7 Jack Grealish's days at City are numbered Credit: Getty City became a bit predictable last season, but trickster Cherki can do anything with the ball at his feet from rainbow flicks over defender's heads to goals from anywhere with either feet. Let's hope Pep does not take the creativity and excitement out his game like he has done to Grealish, who will leave after being left out their Club World Cup squad. Newcastle, Aston Villa, Tottenham and Napoli have all been linked with a move for him in the region of £40m-£50m. And the Toon should go all out to bring the 29-year-old to St James' Park. 7 They will have dreams of winning the Europa League and could do with another wide man to compete with Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy, while Grealish could also play just behind Isak as a No10. Newcastle have the money, their fans love a maverick and Eddie Howe is the type of boss to get the best out of him. 7 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW

Celtic land 'massive bonus' with latest transfer deal
McManus sees more than just a left-back with return of Tierney to Celtic Sign up to our Football newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! Learn More Sorry, there seem to be some issues. Please try again later. Submitting... It's not often a Scottish football club lands the complete package football signing for free, but there is a strong argument for such a scenario in the case of Celtic and Kieran Tierney. The Scotland defender's return to Celtic, six years after leaving for Arsenal, was confirmed on Tuesday afternoon. Tierney has penned a five-year contract with his boyhood club and his return has been warmly welcomed by all of a Celtic persuasion. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The left-back won his 50th cap for Scotland against Iceland earlier this month and comes back to Glasgow with experience of the English Premier League with the Gunners, plus a season on loan with Real Sociedad in La Liga. He is comfortable playing as a centre-half these days and, as Celtic B coach Stephen McManus points out, has plenty of miles left to put on the clock. Kieran Tierney has returned to Celtic on a five-year deal. | SNS Group 'Listen, it's massive,' McManus said of Tierney's homecoming. 'The biggest thing is the age that he's at, coming back. It's not as if he's coming back with two years to go within his career. He's still got his full career ahead of him, which is great. You look at the knowledge that he's then gained, being at Arsenal, being away, playing in major tournaments now for Scotland as well. I think it's brilliant. I think it's really, really good. The fact that he's coming and hopefully he's got a good few years ahead of him. He can stay fit and he can bring his personality and his quality to not just the football team, but to the whole football club.' McManus – a true leader in the Celtic teams he played in and now a coach of youngsters – knows a thing or two about setting examples. He believes the influence Tierney can have on the dressing-room as well as on the pitch is just as important to manager Brendan Rodgers. 'It's probably one of the biggest things once you become that kind of experienced player,' continued McManus, speaking to promote Celtic's friendly with Newcastle United next month. 'When you're young and you're developing and you're playing, you play with no fear, but then the older you get, you start to then take interest in a lot more of what goes on around the football club. How you conduct yourself on the pitch, how you conduct yourself off the pitch, especially a club like here, it becomes really important. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad A Celtic captain-in-waiting 'You can see that with Callum [McGregor], you can see that with James [Forrest], the ones that have come through the academy structure here for a long period of time. They're very similar in their personalities and that's really important. Kieran's going to then bring that as well. Again, he's younger than the other two boys, so it's going to be a massive, massive bonus not just for the football club, but also for the national team as well.' McManus accepts the notion that Celtic have another captain-in-waiting in Tierney. 'You never know what's around the corner,' he said. 'I think if Callum doesn't play for whatever reason, there's somebody that's got the personality, he's got the profile, he's got the ability. But like I said, it's just a brilliant signing for the football club because he brings so much on the pitch and so much off the pitch. 'You need people that know the football club to take it on to the next level because you're always educating the next ones that then come. But first and foremost, Kieran's a top, top footballer. He's not coming back because he's a Celtic fan. I think that's important as well. He's coming back because he's a top, top footballer and he's going to bring his experiences, his knowledge and his qualities so that he can then help our football club move forward.' Even at the relatively tender age of 28, Tierney is now the fourth oldest player in the current squad. 'Your job once you become an experienced player is to educate the younger ones and that's when you speak of the business model of the football club,' added McManus. 'What's the recruitment strategy? What does it look like? So Kieran fits that bill because, again, he knows the club but he's a fantastic footballer and his best years are still ahead of him.
