Currys' boss calls on govt to show it's serious about getting people back to work

THE boss of Currys has called on the Government to show it is serious about getting people back to work.
Instead, he says, it is making employing staff 'riskier, harder and more expensive'.

Britain faces a worklessness crisis with three million on sickness benefits and a million young people not in education, training or employment.
Alex Baldock, chief executive of the electricals chain, points out that retailers are the biggest private sector employer and, along with hospitality firms, often give people their first jobs and help to get back into work with flexible, part-time roles.
But he believes these opportunities risk being cut off if the Government goes ahead with its shake-up of employment rights.
Mr Baldock said: 'The Make Work Pay reforms threaten the viability of the very jobs the Government wants to protect.
"Retailers need flexibility because shops are busier at some times than others.
'Saturdays are busier than Tuesdays and December is busier than February so we need to flex up and down how many colleagues we have on the shop floor accordingly.'
He says the biggest problem is demanding that firms give a contract to a worker based on average hours worked in the previous 12 weeks.
This could apply to those taking extra shifts in the run-up to Christmas.
Mr Baldock added: 'We'd end up paying for hours we don't need and can't afford.
"The result is we won't be able to offer them at all.

"The Government wants to protect workers, but workers need somewhere to work.
'The riskier, harder and more expensive it is for business to employ people, the fewer jobs there will be.'
Retailers have already been burdened with £7billion of extra costs following the Budget.
Mr Baldock highlighted that Currys makes just £1.80 of profit for £100 gadgets it sells, a thin margin.
He said: 'The Government said the Budget was an ugly necessity but these employment reforms are a choice.
"It's a choice they don't have to make.'
There is growing frustration that firms that could be hiring and expanding are being hamstrung.
Mr Baldock said: 'The Government is slashing red tape elsewhere and it's great to see them tackling planning reforms and leaning on regulators for growth.
"But the Employment Rights Bill is the odd one out.'

Retailers create the good, flexible jobs tailor-made to get people back to work — and get the welfare bill down.
But just when the Government needs more people back into work, its actions pull the other way.
Retailers such as Tesco and B&Q have warned Chancellor Rachel Reeves the industry will have to employ 300,000 fewer people due to a barrage of new costs and red tape.
Retailers want to help, and we can.
Our ask of Government is simple: Enlist businesses like us, don't hammer us. Let us play our part in getting Britain back to work.
BUYING'S STAMPED ON IN DIP
HOUSE prices slipped in April as a stamp duty increase for buyers dampened demand.
The average property fell by 0.6 per cent to £270,752, according to Nationwide 's house price index.

The drop follows a rush of house sales in March, when buyers raced to complete their property purchases before the duty discount was scrapped.
Separate figures by HMRC show that the number of property transactions jumped by almost two thirds from 109,700 in February to 177,370 in March.

Yet so far this year almost 15,000 people have arrived in the UK in small boats — up 42 per cent on this time last year and a 95 per cent rise from the same point in 2023. This week ministers sought to blame the weather and insisted that their policies would be effective in making good on Starmer's pledge. But what exactly is the government doing, and how successful has it been? A new deal with France From the British side perhaps the most critical element of the government's small boats strategy has been to leverage Starmer's relationship with President Macron to persuade the French to take a more proactive approach to preventing small boats setting sail from French waters in the first place. At the start of the year the prime minister hosted Macron at Chequers, where the two leaders agreed to step up bilateral co-operation to prevent Channel crossings. This led to a formal agreement a month later under which the UK extended a £480 million deal to pay for policing French beaches in return for new measures to stem the flow of boats. In particular, Paris agreed to change the law to allow police officers to apprehend vessels in shallow waters and restore the offence of an 'illegal stay' in France, which would allow the police to arrest migrants and smugglers before they attempted a crossing. There was also a commitment by France to speed up the construction of a detention centre in Dunkirk — paid for by the British — which had become bogged down in planning rows. But, so far, these commitments have yet to materialise. The plan to enable police to intervene within 300m of the shore is yet to be implemented amid opposition from the officers themselves. There is also still slow progress on Dunkirk. Verdict: Ministers believe improved co-operation with France is as close as it comes to a silver bullet to stem the flow of boats. But while Starmer has won important commitments from Paris, which were never given to the last government, these commitments have yet to materialise into action on the ground. New legal powers to tackle smuggling gangs In January ministers published a bill that they claimed would give police anti-terrorism-style powers to 'identify, disrupt and prevent' organised immigration crime. The Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill, which is going through the House of Lords, will make it illegal to handle items suspected of being used for organised immigration crime, such as boat parts and engines, with a maximum punishment of 14 years in prison. Those found collecting information that could be used by people smugglers will face up to five years in jail. This would include researching routes or vessels online, or arranging departure points, dates and times. The new offences will be accompanied by additional powers for Border Force officers, police and the National Crime Agency. They will be allowed to seize and search the mobile phones of anyone arriving in the UK illegally if they believe it will help an investigation into who organised the journey. The information gathered will also be available to be used in cases brought overseas. Verdict: Senior policing figures believe the legislation will make a difference in their ability to dismantle the smuggling gangs — pointing out that the numbers involved are in the hundreds — and are vulnerable to a concerted attempt to dismantle their activities. However, as the bill is not yet law, at the moment it remains an aspiration. Return hubs In one of his first acts as prime minister Starmer scrapped the Conservative Party's plans to send migrants to Rwanda, branding it a waste of money and a 'gimmick'. However, he is now drawing up a policy that sounds remarkably similar — sending failed asylum seekers to 'return hubs' in the west Balkans. There is one significant difference: the Tories planned to send all those who came to the UK on small boats abroad, while Labour's plan is limited to those who have exhausted all avenues of appeal. But the intent is similar: to deter people from making the crossings in the first place. Verdict: The plans are at a very early stage, and it is not a given that countries will agree to host the return hubs. Albania has already ruled out doing so. There remain significant legal and political challenges to getting the scheme off the ground. There is broader support for the idea among some EU states and also in the UN. But even if the plans get off the ground, there is no guarantee it will work as a deterrent. Deal with other countries In December Starmer negotiated a deal with Germany, which agreed to tighten its laws to make it easier to prosecute those helping to smuggle migrants to the UK. Ministers said this was important because facilitating people-smuggling to a third country was not technically illegal in Germany. However, the law has not yet been enacted, and ministers need to win approval from the new German government for it to be put into place. Starmer has also recently announced a partnership with Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia to detect and deter illegal migration operations. Verdict: The prime minister has made improving international co-operation to tackle smuggling gangs a big diplomatic priority for the government. But while the issue is a huge priority for the UK it is less important for other countries, and it remains to be seen how quickly and effectively diplomatic deals are converted into concrete action. The asylum backlog and hotels There are 8,000 more asylum seekers living in hotels than when Starmer pledged during the election campaign in June last year to 'end asylum hotels, saving the taxpayer billions of pounds'. The reality of how difficult that is has become clear. This month the National Audit Office said the cost of asylum accommodation would be three times higher than previously estimated and more than 38,000 migrants are being housed in hotels, costing the Home Office an estimated £5.5 million a day — while a further 66,000 migrants are in dispersal accommodation such as large houses, bedsits and flats across different local authorities. • Migrants will be put up in hotels for years yet, Treasury admits The vast majority are awaiting asylum decisions, so speeding up that process is seen as key. The Home Office has had some success — it has been increased by 52 per cent and 24,000 people have been removed from the country. Yvette Cooper, the home secretary, is also planning to change the law to introduce a mandatory 24-week legal deadline for all asylum appeals. Verdict: If decision-making can genuinely be sped up it will help not only to bring down the hotel bill, but could act as a deterrent for those considering making the journey across the Channel. Human rights laws Ministers will bring in a new framework for judges to work to when deciding whether to allow migrants to make claims for asylum using the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR). The most heavily used part of the ECHR, Article 8 — the right to family life — has been leveraged by murderers and paedophiles to stay in the country. Cooper revealed this week about 30 per cent of cases had been considered 'exceptional' by judges, and she wants to restrict that to a more narrow set of circumstances. • Kemi Badenoch would override ECHR on asylum for illegal migrants Verdict: Restricting the scope of Article 8 will save ministers from some embarrassing headlines but is unlikely to be enough on its own to fulfil the government's immigration pledges. An appetite to direct judges — and suggestions that the government could be open to reforming the ECHR — shows a willingness from Starmer and Cooper to step into an arena previously inhabited by the Tories and Reform UK. But as those on the right ramp up pressure for Britain to pull out of the convention altogether, the efforts may fall short.

Keir Starmer unveiled plans to extend the lifeline benefit to all kids in families who get Universal Credit in England, in a move that could save parents up to £500 a year. ‌ It marks a victory for the Mirror's long-running campaign to widen provision to stop children being too hungry to learn. ‌ The Prime Minister praised our campaign, and told Mirror readers: "My government will leave no stone unturned in our pursuit to give every child the best start in life." Teachers, doctors, and child poverty campaigners have long called for an overhaul of strict eligibility rules, which mean around 900,000 children living in poverty don't qualify. Currently, all children in England can get free school meals until the end of Year 2 but after that they only qualify if their family gets certain benefits. Youngsters whose families claim Universal Credit only qualify if their household earns less than £7,400-a-year after benefits. ‌ But from September 2026, all children in UC households will be able to get a free, nutritious hot meal. More than 500,000 kids are expected to benefit from the change, and the Government said it would lift 100,000 children out of poverty. Writing in the Mirror, the Prime Minister said: "I want every child to have every opportunity and the best support to aim high, achieve good grades, and get the best education possible. ‌ "That starts with the basics - it's common sense that children can't do well at school if they're hungry." He added: "It will put £500 in parents' pockets, help children achieve at school, and ease cost-of-living pressures. "The Mirror has long campaigned on free school meals, so I'm delighted that we're able to make this announcement today." ‌ Expanding free school meal provision can not only save parents money on packed lunches but also improve children's health, drive up school attendance and improve behaviour and concentration. Research by School Food Matters last year found 38% of teachers reported that pupils in their classes were regularly too hungry to learn. ‌ Some 24% of heads said their school was operating a foodbank. Some 2.1 million pupils - almost one in four (24.6%) - in England were eligible for free school meals in January 2024. The numbers have soared since the start of the Covid pandemic - when 1.44 million children were eligible - in a sign of the pressures on household budgets. ‌ The decision comes as pressure mounts on the Government to do more to address rising levels of child poverty. Former PM Gordon Brown said last month that Labour must act now to help "austerity's children" as 4.8 million kids could be living in hardship by 2029. Ministers have delayed publication of a long-promised plan to the autumn amid calls from Labour MPs to scrap the Tory-era two-child benefit limit, which has been blamed for pushing families into hardship. ‌ Campaigners hailed the decision to widen free school meal provision as a "game changer" for families struggling with cost of living pressures. Nick Harrison, chief executive of the Sutton Trust social mobility charity, said: "This is a significant step towards taking hunger out of the classroom. "Children can't learn effectively when hungry, so this announcement not only helps to tackle the effects of child poverty, but will also likely help improve education outcomes for disadvantaged young people. ‌ Kate Anstey, head of education policy at Child Poverty Action Group said: "This is fantastic news and a game-changer for children and families. "At last more kids will get the food they need to learn and thrive and millions of parents struggling to make ends meet will get a bit of breathing space." ‌ Daniel Kebede, General Secretary of the National Education Union, which campaigned alongside the Mirror, said: 'The National Education Union is proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with our campaign partner the Mirror in celebrating this historic win. "After years of joint campaigning, knowing tens of thousands more children will benefit from a hot, healthy school meal is the good news NEU members have been waiting for. "But we won't stop there. The cost of living still impacts too many children, so we continue to call for Free School Meals for all. ‌ "Let's make sure there is no child left behind.' Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson, Munira Wilson said: " Liberal Democrats have been pushing hard for this crucial change for years. The third series sees the positive Chelsea, played by British actress Wood, 31, try to keep her mysterious older boyfriend, Rick, played by 53-year-old US actor Goggins, calm in Thailand. Following the 2025 series, Goggins appeared to step away from his fellow co-stars, and unfollow Greater Manchester-born Wood on Instagram. They both addressed the swirling rumours during a joint interview for US publication Variety, which was published on Wednesday. Goggins said: 'There is no feud. I adore, I love this woman (Aimee) madly, and she is so important to me.' He added that 'she's special', and explained he had not addressed the reports before as he did not want to talk about Wood when she was not there. 'I think it's such a comment on where we're at culturally. Why is everyone obsessing over Instagram? That is irrelevant. We don't give a shite about Instagram,' Wood said. Goggins said that when he finished The White Lotus he 'needed to just back away from everyone', as it is his 'process' when filming a project ends. 'It's all so ridiculous,' he said. 'It's just a part of me just saying goodbye to this character so that now Aimee and I will be friends for f****** ever.' Wood previously criticised a Saturday Night Live sketch, with an cast member impersonating her with exaggerated prosthetic teeth, calling it 'mean and unfunny' on Instagram. She told Variety that it 'felt misogynistic. It felt like the punchline was a woman's appearance, which is just not funny. It's not cool'. Goggins shared the same sketch online and praised Jon Hamm for playing a version of his character, before deleting the Instagram post, ahead of hosting SNL> He said he was 'gonna say it (something) to your face', and added: 'I don't use social media in any way, and I'm not a mean guy.' SNL apologised for the April sketch, according to Wood, and the comedian and cast member who impersonated her, Sarah Sherman, sent her flowers to apologise. Wood is also known for Netflix teen show Sex Education, BBC comedy Daddy Issues and the 2022 drama film Living with Bill Nighy. Goggins has been in Western series Justified, post-apocalyptic series Fallout, and drama Sons Of Anarchy. He has had two Emmy nods, while Wood has won a TV Bafta for Sex Education and been given a Rising Star Bafta nomination.
