UK retailer cancels Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders a week before launch

A UK retailer has informed customers it's cancelled their Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders, causing pandemonium amongst some fans. No matter where you are in the world, the Nintendo Switch 2 is likely going to be incredibly hard to come by once it launches next week. Pre-orders here in the UK routinely sell out, while the My Nintendo Store in Japan completely ran out of stock last month. Aside from Smyths, which promises to have some stock available in its stores as part of a midnight launch, you shouldn't expect to be able to purchase a Switch 2 over the counter for a while. However, even those who've successfully scored pre-orders aren't safe from a Switch 2-less launch day, as one UK retailer has admitted it's cancelled some of them for unknown reasons. In a post to its X account, GAME apologised to customers for the cancellations. So, if you pre-ordered through GAME, you should check your emails in case you've been affected. GAME hasn't stated how many customers have been impacted, nor what the cause is, so it's unclear if it's a stock shortage issue or a technical error of some kind. Whatever's going on, GAME says it is 'working to reinstate as many affected pre-orders as possible. If your pre-order was impacted, please know that we're doing everything we can and will be in touch with further updates and next steps.' It's hardly a good look for GAME, which has been in sharp decline over the past few years. After having already halted sales of pre-owned games and its own rewards scheme, it confirmed it wouldn't be able to offer Switch 2 pre-orders in store and last month it shut down its headquarters in Basingstoke. With any luck, the situation will be resolved in time for the console's launch. Although, even if the cancellations are undone, there's now no guarantee customers will get it on launch day. At time of writing, new pre-orders in the UK are almost non-existent, with even Nintendo's own storefront out of stock. More Trending There is one Mario Kart World bundle still available at Currys, which also comes with a 256GB microSD card for data storage, the Switch 2 camera accessory, and a Switch 2 copy of Street Fighter 6. As such, it's a lot pricier than usual, at £579 instead of the usual £429.99. Currys is also running a midnight launch in Oxford Street so anyone who's pre-ordered a Switch 2 with that store can go pick it up from the counter as soon as the clock ticks 12. You can find some Switch 2's being scalped on eBay as well, but you'll be expected to cough up for above the normal retail price. Currys begins rollout of VoCoVo headsets across UK&I stores

UK-based technology products and services retailer Currys has partnered retail communications specialist VoCoVo to roll out Series 5 Pro headset technology across all its stores in the UK and Ireland. The initiative is part of Currys' investment in store safety and aims to equip every colleague with a headset by the end of May 2025. The move is a response to an industry-wide increase in shoplifting and incidents of abuse against employees, with the headsets designed to keep staff better connected and safer on the shop floor. The latest 2025 Crime Survey from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) reveals that the aggregate expense incurred by the retail sector due to crime and expenditure on preventive strategies escalated to £4.2bn in 2023/24 - an increase from £3.3bn reported in the preceding year. Of this total, theft by customers represented a significant portion, amounting to £2.2bn in losses. The UK government has enacted new legislative measures to address the escalating issue of retail crime. Following a successful trial in 20 selected stores, Currys has now initiated a full rollout of the VoCoVo headsets. Currys UK stores director Matthew Speight stated: 'Incidents of shoplifting and aggression against retail workers are continuing to rise at a completely unacceptable level. 'VoCoVo's headsets, alongside a range of other store safety measures, are allowing us to put our best foot forward in protecting colleagues and customers from dangerous situations. We're excited to be rolling out the headsets to all our stores following positive feedback from the in-store trials.' The new technology not only enhances safety but also improves the in-store experience for customers. Colleagues can communicate more effectively, ensuring that customer queries are addressed promptly. The integration of Call Points throughout the stores will enable customers to request assistance at the push of a button. These notifications will be sent directly to the headsets worn by store colleagues, ensuring that help is promptly provided. VoCoVo UK and European Union commercial growth head Olivia Robinson stated: 'Currys is one of the most recognisable UK retail brands, known for trading the best tech products. 'As a tech-first company ourselves, we share many values with Currys and are proud to announce this partnership. We have enjoyed a successful trial and look forward to continuing to support the full rollout and seeing the impact VoCoVo makes to Currys and its colleagues.' VoCoVo introduced VoCoVo Link, a wearable headset system aimed at boosting communication, efficiency and safety for smaller retail teams, especially those in convenience stores, in 2024. The lightweight headsets support discreet, instant communication among team members, enhancing teamwork, speeding up customer service and providing a more effective way to handle security issues. Second UK retailer to hold limited Nintendo Switch 2 midnight launch

A second UK retailer has revealed it's holding a Nintendo Switch 2 midnight launch, as well as Smyths. We're officially only one week away from the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, with retailers stocking up on the console in preparation for all the pre-orders. Although midnight launches aren't much of a thing anymore, earlier this week Smyths announced it has events planned across all its stores. Stock will be limited but it does mean you can claim a Switch 2 first thing in the morning on June 5. As it turns out, at least one other UK retailer is also holding a midnight launch, albeit at only one location. Currys – who have been one of the go-to places for Switch 2 pre-orders, when it has the stock – has announced it will have a launch event for Nintendo's new console. However, it is limited to the Currys store in Oxford Street, London and only for customers who have already pre-ordered a Switch 2 with them. So, don't rock up expecting to buy a console at the counter. This would also explain why we can't find any mention of the event on the Currys website. At the very least, this is an option for those who can't bear to wait for their pre-order to arrive and want the Switch 2 set up ASAP. It may be worth checking in your local Currys to ask if they'll be holding their own midnight launch, since one Redditor on the Nintendo Switch 2 subreddit claims the store in Edinburgh is holding one too. As it stands, Smyths and Currys seem to be the only UK retailers holding midnight launches for the Switch 2, which just goes to show how much they've fallen out of fashion over the years. Despite the launch not being for another seven days, several people have managed to get their hands on the Switch 2 early, with one sharing an unboxing video yesterday. More Trending A Russian YouTuber also posted a nine minute video demonstrating the set-up process, as well as a look at all the Switch 2's menus. Unsurprisingly, it's been taken down from YouTube, but you can still find it on Reddit. The video confirms that the console won't work properly without a day one patch, with an attempt to connect to the Nintendo eShop demanding a system update that isn't available yet. While a mandatory internet connection is bound to be unpopular with some customers, this is clearly Nintendo's way of counteracting this exact situation. It's unclear if this applies to physical games, but it does at least prevent digital games from being played, which explains why no footage of Mario Kart World – which is included as a digital download in certain Switch 2 bundles – has leaked yet. Currys worker's fury over missing office mug ‘out of proportion', judge rules

The colleagues of a man who became 'very upset' about his office mug going missing likely felt his response was 'out of proportion', an employment tribunal has found. A judge ruled that Adeel Habib probably gave his colleagues 'reason to believe that he viewed the loss of the mug as stealing' and that this is 'likely to have caused some resentment towards him'. The ruling came in a case brought by Mr Habib against Currys, where he was employed between January and March 2023 as a credit support associate at their office in Poole, Dorset. Mr Habib accused his former colleagues of 'cold-shouldering' him following the dispute over his mug, which he claimed amounted to racial discrimination. But his claim was dismissed after a hearing in Southampton, with Judge David Hughes saying that Mr Habib was 'probably very upset' about his mug and noting that 'he can language that is apt to strike others as confrontational, even if he does not intend to be'. The judge said: 'We find that he probably did give his colleagues reason to believe that he viewed the loss of the mug as stealing. We find that this is likely to have caused some resentment towards him.' He added: 'Sad though it is to have to say this, it seems to us to be likely that Mr Habib is, unfortunately, ill-equipped to cope with the nuances of social interaction in the workplace, and lacks the sort of social skills that might have eased tensions that arose around the mug incident.' Mr Habib also alleged that he had been racially discriminated against in his manager's decision to deny him five weeks' of holiday leave to attend weddings in Pakistan, in a request lodged a month after joining the company. But this was rejected by the tribunal, with the judge finding that 'Mr Habib was denied his requested holiday leave on a reasonable application of Currys' policy and practice'. A further claim, that he was sexually harassed by a married colleague who left a bottle of Juice Burst on his desk, which Mr Habib considered to have 'a sexual connotation', was also rejected. However, Mr Habib was awarded three weeks' additional notice pay, with the tribunal rejecting further claims for arrears of pay and bonus payments.

Secrets of Ireland's fridges uncovered as Currys launches For The Tech You Love

More than half of Ireland's refrigerators contain leftovers that will never be eaten, while one fridge in four is home to a Tupperware container which holds contents that are a mystery even to the owner. These are just two of the revelations from a new survey into how Irish consumers use our fridges, and what their contents reveal about us. The nationwide survey was commissioned by Currys to launch its new brand ad campaign For The Tech You Love. The campaign celebrates the humble fridge and indicates the truth behind our most common kitchen appliance, that we're a nation of chaos-stackers and cheese hoarders. A massive 95 percent of us always have milk chilling on standby, while 57 percent admit clinging to 'leftovers we'll never eat'. # And nearly a quarter of us confess to owning a 'mystery' Tupperware container in which the contents are best left unidentified - while almost half of us (40 percent) keep items that are technically expired but 'still smell grand'. The national debate over what actually belongs in the fridge rages on too. Two thirds of us (67 percent) keep their ketchup cold, 61 percent refrigerate their eggs, and 32 percent chill chocolate, all of which should spark another round of fridge vs press warfare in households across the country. Meanwhile, our cleanliness could use a boost: only 10 percent clean of us clean our fridge weekly, while more than a quarter wait until something starts to smell. No surprise that the feature most people want in a future fridge is a self-cleaning mode (61 percent ). Roz Purcell topped the list of Irish celebs we trust to have the most organised fridge, while south Dublin won the unofficial crown for Ireland's fanciest fridge setups (with a smug 73 percent of the vote ). While most of us admit trying to find a system to tame the chaos. Currys' new brand platform For the Tech You Love has been designed to reposition Currys as more than a retailer by tapping into the everyday relationship people have with the technology in their lives. The new creative direction reflects Currys' ambition to reposition itself in the hearts and minds of customers – not just as a tech retailer, but as a brand that understands how personal those choices can be. From the excitement of unboxing a new device to finding a fridge that makes a statement, For the Tech You Love brings these moments to life in a way that's both personal and entertaining – without taking itself too seriously. So whether your fridge is bursting at the seams or clinging to payday leftovers, Currys has the perfect model for every home, style and food habit. Find their full range of refrigeration products at
