VFS Global rolls out South Africa passport renewal services in Dubai
Applicants no longer need to visit the Consulate General in Dubai to submit their passport renewal requests. They can now submit their applications at the VFS Global centre in Dubai or at the Embassy of South Africa in Abu Dhabi.

To apply for consular passport services, begin by visiting https://services.vfsglobal.com/are/en/zap, selecting 'Apply for Consular services → Passport,' and booking an appointment slot. Next, prepare all required documents according to the checklist provided online. On the scheduled date and time, visit the VFS Global centre to submit documents and complete biometric enrollment. The applicable fees must be paid at the centre during the appointment. After submission, you can track the progress of your application online using the application reference number. Please note that passports are processed in South Africa and returned to the VFS Global office in Dubai.
Applicants are urged to apply at least 12 months before their current passport expires and are advised against making firm travel plans until the new passport is in hand. The Department of Home Affairs advises a minimum of 8-to-10-week processing from the date the of submitting the application at the VFS Global centre.
Applicants can also choose from a range of optional services for enhanced convenience, including Premium Lounge services for end-to-end guidance in a plush ambience, professional form filling assistance, Photocopy and printing services, SMS/email status alerts throughout the process, and Prime Time for document submission outside of business hours. These services are completely optional and come at an extra charge. Choosing these services has no bearing on the timeline or outcome of the applications.
Currently, VFS Global offers passport renewal services on behalf of the Department of Home Affairs through a network of eight centres in four countries and offers South Africa visa services through a network of 47 Visa Application Centres in 19 countries.

Etihad Rail to slash travel time by nearly half: What UAE will be like once trains start
When Etihad Rail passenger train services are rolled out, it has the potential to reduce commute times and give greater connectivity to smaller towns, according to urban planners. The network could even prove a new regional urban system. ' Etihad Rail will redefine mobility across the UAE by enabling reliable, high-speed intercity travel at speeds of up to 200 kmph, reducing commute times by as much as 40 per cent,' said Sercan Alturk, Managing Director at FTI Consulting. 'It's widespread availability will improve social connectivity, foster stronger community ties, and facilitate seamless travel between cities for both work and leisure.' Urban planning expert Shweta Gandhi added that the rail could serve as the 'backbone' of a new regional system. 'Imagine a UAE where you can live in Ajman, work in Abu Dhabi, and spend your weekends in Fujairah, all without relying on a private car,' she said. Last week, Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum shared on social media how he rode the passenger train from Dubai to Fujairah and said that he was 'proud' of the country for the project. Etihad Rail is set to launch its passenger train service in 2026, marking a significant milestone in the country's transportation infrastructure. Reduced car dependency According to Sercan, one of the biggest impact the network will have is people's reduced dependency on cars. 'The rail network will offer a reliable and efficient transportation option even in smaller towns,' he said. 'Current projections estimate an annual ridership of 36.5 million passengers, underscoring the network's role as a cornerstone of national mobility transformation.' He added that beyond the environmental impact, the network will alleviate pressure on road infrastructure, with each train helping to reduce vehicle traffic by up to 300 trucks or private passenger vehicles. Farah Naz, Director Climate and Sustainability Advisory at Aecom, added that the passenger train network would steadily improve. 'As per the Green Transition vision, stated in the UAE's Net Zero Long Term Strategy, the country intends to invest 1,000 kilometres of train infrastructure between 2025 and 2030 to accommodate increased passenger travel,' she said. 'The intention is, the number of passenger trains will rise from 2025 onwards, with a progressive increase up to 2050. Therefore, this project is a significant player in alignment with the decarbonisation vision of UAE.' She shared how trains have one of the lowest carbon emissions among modes of transportation and that Etihad Rail would drastically lower the carbon footprint in the UAE. Jobs Farah explained how apart from having low carbon, low cost, sustainable transportation, the project would also 'establish and sustain a significant number of green jobs around the rail network and the cities and communities it will touch'. Sercan added that by 2030, the network is projected to generate over 9,000 direct jobs. 'In parallel, indirect employment opportunities are anticipated to emerge in retail, hospitality, and real estate, particularly in areas surrounding key station hubs,' he said. 'Improved connectivity is expected to stimulate local economic growth, attract new businesses, and enhance access to education and healthcare, making rural communities more vibrant, livable, and well-integrated with urban centers.' Farah added that a reduction in pollution from industry, energy, and transportation will lead to improved air quality and public health. Challenges Despite the positives, Shweta said that the success of the project could depend on a number of factors. 'How people live and work will depend on last-mile integration, first/last-mile connectivity, and how well it interfaces with local transit systems like the Dubai Metro, buses, and emerging micromobility options in other emirates,' she said. 'The rail alone is not a silver bullet, but it can certainly be a powerful backbone for a multi-modal ecosystem.' She added that if not paired with strong land use controls, there's a risk of sprawl, speculative real estate activity, or non-inclusive growth near stations, especially if smaller towns are seen merely as satellite dormitories rather than holistic communities.

Work has begun on the much-anticipated multi-billion-dollar UAE-Oman railway project. Plans for a railway between the neighbouring GCC nations have been in the offing since 2022 and work is finally underway. The railway project will initially operate between the UAE capital of Abu Dhabi and the Omani port city of Sohar. The project will cover a distance of 303km and travel at speeds of up to 200km/h. And it will be equipped to handle the diverse terrains between the two countries, as well as any unpredictable weather conditions and water flow from surrounding valleys. Innovative and sustainable engineering solutions will ensure safe journeys. Work on the huge project got underway in May 2024, following a shareholder agreement between Hafeet Rail, a company made up of Etihad Rail and Oman Rail, and construction companies. Works are progressing along the railway alignment between the two nations. The update pointed out that progress is underway in several areas in North Al Batinah and Al Buraimi governates in Oman and in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. To date, more than one million man-hours have been clocked in developing the railway. The name of Hafeet Rail for the project was decided following the joint UAE-Oman Business Forum held in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday April 23. What the UAE-Oman Hafeet Rail means for you Initially, it will operate between the Al Wathba area near Abu Dhabi and the Omani port city of Sohar. With a speed reaching 200 kilometres per hour, journeys between Abu Dhabi and Sohar will take 100 minutes. Passenger trains will be able to accommodate up to 400 people. The project board aims to 'establish a record-breaking timeline for implementation', so expect it to be established sooner than you think. The freight train will have a capacity equivalent to 300 trucks which will reduce carbon emissions generated by trucks by 80 per cent. The railway aims to be a quick and efficient way of connecting the two countries, which is hoped to reduce car traffic and, consequently, the carbon footprint. This railway project would see the two Gulf countries connect and align with long-term plans for the GCC vision of a Gulf Railway. The Gulf Railway was planned to be opened by 2025, but construction has yet to begin in earnest. And, for businesses, it's predicted that it will have a major impact on trade between the two countries as one freight train trip is capable of transporting 15,000 tonnes of general cargo. Hafeet Rail will connect five major ports and a number of free zones in both countries and will see transportation time cut in half compared to traditional on-ground methods.
