Ayr United take play-off advantage as Jamie Murphy heads Firhill winner for Honest Men

Daily Record06-05-2025

United will go into Friday's second leg with a narrow lead after coming through tonight's Firhill tie on top.
Jamie Murphy used all of his experience to put Ayr in the play-off driving seat as the Honest Men mastered Maryhill on Tuesday night.
The veteran playmaker popped up with a glancing header early in the second half to deservedly hand United the advantage going into Friday's second leg at Somerset.

United were measured for large parts of this contest and even had to negotiate an early injury reshuffle at the back which threatened to derail their plans.

They had been dealt a huge body blow before a ball was even kicked when George Stanger - an ever-present in the Championship this season - was ruled out through injury.
And United could name only six on their bench as they went with a reshaped back three with saw Nick McAllister and Lenny Agbaire alongside Scott McMann.
Their woes continued just seconds into the game when McAllister sustained a head knock challenging Dan O'Reilly and, although able to continue for a few minutes, ultimately had to be withdrawn.
That meant another reshuffle with the game barely underway, but Ayr refused to be knocked from their stride and began the game brightly.
Marco Rus went close as they had the game's first chance before a flurry of stoppages in play by ref David Dickinson threatened to spoil the contest.
Ayr needed Josh Clarke to come up big with a massive stop to deny Thistle co-manager Brian Graham when he plucked the striker's goalbound header out of the air - just as it looked to be soaring into the top corner.

Seconds later, Dickinson came to Ayr's aid when he waved away loud penalty shouts after Agbaire had tussled with Robbie Crawford inside the box.
Half time was met with a chorus of boos from the home support, who showered Dickinson with a less than positive appraisal of his display to that point.
And the mood of the Thistle support didn't improve much after the interval as Ayr forged in front with a beauty of a goal. Connor McLennan did the spadework down the right with a wicked delivery and veteran Murphy arrived with the deftest of headers to send the Ayr support wild.
United could have been dreaming on the hour mark when McLennan picked the pocket of the Thistle defence but he couldn't play in Oakley with the Ayr number nine screaming for a pass when unmarked in the box.
And with Ayr beginning to enjoy themselves, McLennan then flashed an effort inches wide of the post as the visitors looked to flex their muscle on the tie.
The hosts piled forward in the latter stages in the hope of a dramatic leveller and Graham headed wide with the clock ticking down but Ayr were able to see it out.

Thomas Tuchel's reason for choosing England over Man Utd - 'Straightforward'

Thomas Tuchel was among the favourites to replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, but the German opted to venture into international football with England Thomas Tuchel admitted it was the focus on football that was his reason behind accepting the England job instead of replacing Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. Prior to the Dutchman's sacking at Old Trafford last October, Tuchel was among the favourites for the job following the summer talks he had with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Tuchel - who'll lead his side in their World Cup qualifying clash against Andorra on Saturday - opted to ignore United's overtures as he was announced as new manager of the Three Lions less than two weeks before Ten Hag was dismissed. ‌ Despite the interest from the Premier League giants, the ex- Chelsea boss admitted it was an easy decision to make the foray into international football for the first time in his career because of the onus that was placed on football in the presentation he received from England executives. ‌ "The idea and the way John [McDermott] and Mark [Bullingham] presented it was very fast and confidential," he said when asked why he took the role ahead of waiting for United. "It was very straightforward, it was a decision for this job and not against anything else. They made it clear it's about football and that got me excited," he continued. "I wasn't sure this was the job for me because the schedule is very different. I always wanted to come back to England, that was my big goal. "The offer came at the right time and we found a vision to share. Now I have to live up to it. I know there are some trophies and I want to help that happen." Tuchel has won his first two games in charge of the Three Lions, with a 2-0 victory over Albania in March opening his England account before his side secured a comprehensive 3-0 win over Latvia three days later to top Group K. ‌ Having signed an 18-month deal, the contract will see Tuchel lead England out for the 2026 World Cup – providing they get there. And he previously insisted the quality of talent he has at his disposal means there are high standards for his team to live up to. "We have players who compete in the strongest leagues in the world day in, day out," he declared. "We will need luck, momentum, luck to not have injuries and so on. "We feel confident to add something from our experience in club football that can maybe help. We have to prove ourselves all the time. We have to live up to these standards but I'm confident everyone is used to that." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. 'Sir Alex called me Big Time Charlie – this is the truth about our relationship'

Sir Alex Ferguson has delivered many scathing interviews and comments, but few came close to what he had in store for one of his ex-Manchester United players Sir Alex Ferguson's barbs were notorious for their sting and their ability to stick – just ask former Manchester United midfielder Paul Ince. Back in April 1998, ahead of a Premier League showdown with Liverpool, Sir Alex was dishing out his tactical wisdom. His focus sharpened on the Reds star and ex-United ace Ince, who had made the switch from Inter Milan the previous summer. Ferguson's voice rose, not quite to the decibel-shattering heights of his infamous hairdryer rants, but enough to command undivided attention. ‌ It was during this team talk, famously captured by cameras for the Granada documentary 'The Alex Ferguson Story', that he unleashed an iconic put-down of the ex-England international. ‌ "If he tries to bully you he will f***ing enjoy it. Don't ever let him bully you. Right," bellowed the Scot, his words immortalised by the lens. "You just make sure you are ready for him. That's all you need to worry about. He's a f***ing big-time Charlie." Those four words encapsulated Ferguson's disdain for oversized egos within the squad. By 2008, the legendary manager expressed regret over those remarks, labelling them a "mistake" and vowing to keep cameras away from his motivational speeches henceforth. In a candid chat with the Manchester Evening News, Ince, while representing bet365, agreed with his former manager and now close friend. He said: "Am I a big time Charlie? Probably, yeah. I played for the biggest clubs in the world. You've got to have that kind of arrogance, not to the extent people don't like you. "But you've got to have some kind of big-time mindset to play for the biggest clubs in the world. In a way, he was right, but it's nothing that was ever going to affect me because I know how close we were." A decade on from Fergie putting his words out there for all to see, Ince was managing Blackburn Rovers against his old boss. Reflecting on the past remarks before the game, Ferguson said: "I regret saying that. That was a mistake. We let a camera into our dressing room, which we had never done before, and it won't happen again. It wasn't a personality issue with Paul. With Paul you could not have a honeymoon all the time, because he was such a volatile character, but he never let us down." ‌ Revisiting the legendary manager's moment of remorse, an event rarely witnessed during or after his illustrious career, Ince said: "Listen, people seem to have the impression that me and Sir Alex Ferguson never got on. "I used to speak to him all the time and when I was managing Blackburn Rovers, I was on the phone to him all the time. When he said it, I was playing for Liverpool and, really, I think he was trying to wind up the likes of Roy Keane and say 'Oh Ince, he's just a big time Charlie' and all this type of stuff. ‌ "Things like that didn't affect me. Maybe it would with players from today, but not Paul Ince back in my time. The fact that he regretted saying it was neither here nor there. The comment did not affect our friendship." Today, the ex-United manager and the former midfielder enjoy a bond that withstands the test of time and competition. That does not mean they have stopped competing against each other, though. "I will always go to his house and play snooker, and kick his a***, and I will always pick my phone up to ring him," Ince added with a chuckle, highlighting the strong relationship that spans over three decades. Paul Ince was speaking on behalf of bet365, the official global partner of the UEFA Champions League. bet365 have given away more than 3000 UEFA Champions League tickets to fans this season, including the semi-finals and final.
