Participants in the 2025 Tour de Bowness wait for the starting gun Sunday.
Bowness was thick with bicycles Monday, as the Tour de Bowness rolled through the community to an exciting conclusion.
It's the 22nd edition of the popular event, which combines high level competitive cycling with a community festival.
Tour de Bowness race director Bob Grunewald, who also runs Bow Cycle says it takes a lot to organize the event, which drew 202 participants from as far away as Yukon and Germany, but that it's worth it.
'It's a lot of work, but it's an absolute blast watching the racers, getting a reason for all these people to come out and watch some awesome bike racing,' Grunewald said. 'It's pretty, pretty happy for me.'

The participants compete on a one-kilometre circuit that features seven sharp turns through Bowness. It's the largest amateur cycling event in the province.
The three-day event which concludes at 5 p.m. Monday, also features a community street festival featuring food, artisanal vendors, street performers and a live music stage.
'We've got over 100 vendors,' said Kelly Freeman, executive director of the Mainstreet Bowness Business Improvement Area (BIA) .
'We've got our Zoomy Zone face painters, balloon artists, live music, and, of course, our epic races.'

One year ago, Bowness was hit by a massive water main break but Freeman said that challenge didn't dampen enthusiasm for the Tour de Bowness.
'It's amazing how resilient Bowness is,' Freeman said. 'So last year we did have our Tour de Bowness, and it was like that (water main break) didn't even happen.'

Restorative justice and the Hockey Canada trial

The Hockey Canada case captivated the country — raising complex questions about consent, hockey culture and even how sports organizations handle accusations of assault. In late July, all five of the accused members of Canada's 2018 world junior hockey team were found not guilty of sexual assault. After the verdict, a lawyer for one of the players, Megan Savard, said her client, Carter Hart, would have been open to a restorative justice process instead of a trial. Some legal experts say restorative justice is an alternative to the court process that could offer healing for victims and offenders. Jennifer Llewellyn, law professor and chair in restorative justice at Dalhousie's Schulich School of Law, joins The Decibel today. She'll explain how restorative justice works and its potential to address issues like the ones raised by the Hockey Canada case. Questions? Comments? Ideas? Email us at thedecibel@

(AP Photo/David Zalubowski) TORONTO — Toronto FC is close to acquiring attacking midfielder Djordje Mihailovic from the Colorado Rapids in a cash deal, according to a source. The transfer is not yet finalized, according to the source granted anonymity because they are not authorized to comment on the negotiations. TFC, without a designated player since buying out the contracts of Italians Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi in early July, has been looking for some star power. And Toronto, which sits 12th in the Eastern Conference at 5-13-6, needs help in attack. With 25 goals in 24 games, it ranks 26th in the league on offence. Canadian international Theo Corbeanu leads the team with five goals while Honduran Deybi Flores, a defensive-minded midfielder, tops the team with two assists. The 26-year-old Mihailovic has nine goals and seven assists in 24 regular-season outings for Colorado this season. He is making $1.775 million (all figures in U.S. dollars) with the Rapids this season, a bargain compared to the $15.4 million Toronto was paying Insigne and the $6.295 million Bernardeschi was earning. Toronto marks the fifth career team for Mihailovic and his second in Canada. He spent the 2021 and '22 seasons with CF Montreal, playing 61 regular-season games, including 57 starts. In 2021, he recorded 16 assists, erasing the previous club record of 13 set by Ignacio Piatti in 2018. Montreal had acquired Mihailovic from the Chicago Fire in exchange for $800,000 in general allocation money. Signed as a homegrown player from the Fire academy in January 2017, he played 73 regular-season games for the Fire, including 45 starts, with seven goals and 15 assists. After the 2022 MLS season, Mihailovic joined AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands. He had two goals and two assists in 36 appearances across all competitions for the Dutch side before leaving to join Colorado in January 2024, signing on as a designated player on a four-year contract through 2027 with a club option through 2028. Mihailovic has one goal in 11 appearances for the U.S., scoring against Panama in a January 2019 friendly. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 4, 2025.
