Bernardo Silva says City's improvement is ‘a good sign for next season'
Bernardo Silva felt Manchester City delivered a statement performance as they thrashed Juventus in the Club World Cup on Thursday.
The Premier League side produced one of their best displays for some time as they ran out 5-2 winners in Orlando to secure top spot in Group G.
After an underwhelming 2024-25 campaign, it was a result that indicated their recent frustrations could be behind them and underlined their credentials to win the tournament.
They will now return to the Camping World Stadium to face Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal for a place in the quarter-finals on Monday (Tuesday 2am UK).
Silva, the new City captain, said: 'We've always been potential winners in all competitions that we play.
'Obviously it's just one game but we're happy that the performance was the way it was.
'It shows that we're improving, we're coming back to the levels and to the standards that we got people used to at this club. That's good.
'That's a good sign for next season. It's not only for this competition, but we want to build to the whole season, to the whole year, because what happened last year was quite disappointing for all of us.
'We want to change, we want to be better. This was a great performance and it shows that we can do it again.'
City had gone into the game trailing Juventus on goals scored and needing to win to secure the theoretically easier route through the knockout stages.
What they produced rendered their frustration to score a seventh goal against Al Ain in their previous game irrelevant.
Jeremy Doku's early strike was cancelled out when Teun Koopmeiners pounced on an Ederson mistake but an own goal from Pierre Kalulu restored City's lead.
Erling Haaland – with his 300th career goal for club and country – added a third before Phil Foden and Savinho turned it into a rout. Dusan Vlahovic scored a late Juve consolation.
City were beaten 2-0 by Juve in the Champions League during their worst spell of form last season but the team, rejuvenated by several new arrivals since, now look a different proposition.
Silva said: 'We had a very good performance against a tough team. They showed that in the past, they beat us last season.
'We wanted to prove that what happened last season will not happen this season, hopefully.'
Silva was chosen as captain by Pep Guardiola after the City manager decided not to hold his usual squad vote this summer.
'It's probably one of the biggest honours of my career,' the Portuguese said. 'I'm going to start my ninth season at the club. All that experience, I will try to pass it to the younger guys.
'But the leadership in a team, it's not about one guy. It's about each one of us being our own leader and helping the guy next to us in the dressing room.
'I will need that help to help the team achieve a lot of things and hopefully win titles.'

Chris Kamara's sadness as 'only five turn up' to Soccer Saturday reunion dinner
Many football fans still miss the old Sky Sports Soccer Saturday line-up, including Chris Kamara, who often tries to organise a get-together with his former colleagues Beloved football pundit Chris Kamara was left disappointed after only five people turned up to his Soccer Saturday reunion. Kamara, 67, was one of the most popular pundits over the course of his 24 years on the show. The former Sheffield United and Luton Town player provided all sorts of funny memories for the millions of people who tuned in. Three years on from walking away from the show, Kamara uploaded a photograph from their reunion. In April last year, Kamara arranged another Soccer Saturday get together which was attended by Alan McInally, Tony Cottee, Jeff Stelling, Phil Thompson and a Sky Sports producer. The Middlesbrough born pundit uploaded a picture of the 2025 reunion onto his social media pages. The producer was there again, as was Shreeves, Charlie Nicholas and Bianca Westwood. Former Soccer Saturday pundits Thompson, Cottee, McInally, Paul Merson and Matt Le Tissier were nowhere to be seen on the day. It's likely that they had their reasons for not being able to attend. Nevertheless, Kamara appeared to be disappointed with the turnout. Alongside the picture he posted, he wrote: "Soccer Saturday reunion dinner. Only five turned up. But still a fabulous night. Condo (producer), Champagne Charlie, Bianca and, of course, Unbelievable Jeff Stelling.' He also added a crying face emoji to his post, suggesting he was rather sad with the low numbers. It's been close to five years since Sky shook up Soccer Saturday by overhauling their pundits. Before the 2020/21 football season, Thompson, Nicholas and Le Tissier were sacked by the programme. Stelling, Camara and Merson were retained by the show, while the likes of Adebayo Akinfenwa, Tim Sherwood, Robbie Fowler and Joleon Lescott were brought in as replacements. Kamara left the show in 2022 after being diagnosed with speech apraxia. While he did not return to Soccer Saturday, he did make a return to live football television on Boxing Day. He appeared on Amazon Prime's live Premier League coverage, where he was reunited with Stelling, who stepped down from his position at Sky Sports in 2023 after 25 years. In an interview with the Express, Kamara opened up about the sadness he felt when he walked away from Sky as a result of his condition, which slows down speech and thought processes. He said: "After 20 plus years of being the first ever in-vision reporter at a live football match, it was with sadness when I realised that I was no longer able to do what I had always taken for granted - just be me. "At that time, I could hardly talk, wasn't able to remember the players names and was slurring my words. I knew then that I had to get help.' Ashley Cole sends warning to fans over 'great' Chelsea player
Ashley Cole has praised 'great lad' Liam Delap but believes he may not hit the ground running at Chelsea. Delap burst onto the scene last season by scoring 12 goals in his first full Premier League campaign but was unable to prevent Ipswich Town's relegation. His form made him a highly-sought after striker, with Chelsea beating the likes of Manchester United to sign him a £30million transfer. He's enjoyed a fine start to life with the Blues at the Club World Cup, assisting Enzo Fernandez on his debut before scoring his first goal for the team against ES Tunis in their final group game. Enzo Maresca's side will now take on Benfica in the round-of-16 on Saturday night in Charlotte. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. Delap was due to lead the line for England at the U21 Euros this summer but pulled out to play at the Club World Cup, but the Young Lions have still reached the final where they'll take on Germany on Saturday. Through England, the 22-year-old has worked closely with Chelsea legend Cole who is assistant manager to Lee Carsley but while the former full-back highly-rates Delap he has warned fans to be patient with him. '[I've been] working with Liam Delap on-and-off for about two years. At the start of the campaign, we had him in the squad and he was influential in qualifying,' Cole told talkSPORT. 'He is a great lad, he's enthusiastic, he wants to learn. He wants to get to the next level and he's got all the tools to do it. 'I think in this day and age, we're a little bit harsh on the younger players. They need time to grow and they don't need to be judged. I think it will take time for him to develop. 'It will take time for him to adapt to the way Chelsea want to play. Of course everyone wants these young players that go into new environments, new clubs to hit the ground running. But I think we have to be realistic. More Trending 'Yes, the price tags also affect people's perception, but again, we have to understand they're still young. 'Hopefully he hits the ground running like many players that move on to the big clubs, but I think we have to sometimes hold back a little bit and understand they are still kids.' With Nicolas Jackson proving to be hit-and-miss and with Christopher Nkunku very likely to leave Stamford Bridge, many fans are hoping Delap can break Chelsea's supposed 'striker curse'. The young forward has even taken on Chelsea's infamous No.9 shirt worn by such flops as Pierre-Emererick Aubameyang, Romelu Lukaku, Gonzalo Higuain, Alvaro Morata and Radamel Falcao.
