U.S. News & World Report's Best States Rankings: Where does NY rank?
New York jumped one spot higher overall in this year's U.S. News & World Report's Best States Rankings, falling almost right in the middle of the list at No. 22.
U.S. News & World Report's 2025 ranking takes a closer look at several metrics across eight categories: crime and corrections, economy, education, fiscal stability, health care, infrastructure, natural environment and opportunity.
Here's how New York fared across the board.
Across U.S. News' main categories, here's how New York ranked:
Fiscal stability: No. 3
Natural environment: No. 6
Health care: No. 8
Education: No. 17
Crime and corrections: No. 24
Infrastructure: No. 34
Economy: No. 41
Opportunity: No. 49
The Empire State also ranked fairly high in these subcategories: public health (No. 2), pollution (No. 5), long-term fiscal stability (No. 6), pre-K education (No. 8) and air and water quality (No. 9).
However, New York fell close to the bottom in these four subcategories: economic opportunity (No. 40), employment (No. 41), economic growth (No. 44) and affordability (No. 45).

Utah was crowned best state overall for a third straight year and ranked in the top 20 for seven of the eight categories, according to the report. Here are U.S. News' top five overall best states in America:

Idaho
Minnesota
Nebraska
Louisiana was ranked the worst state in the U.S., according to the report, and Alaska, Mississippi, New Mexico and West Virginia finished out the report's bottom five states.

Couple goes out for pizza, comes back with $1 million prize When deciding between pizza or a burger for lunch, one California family might tell you to choose pizza. Northern California man McKinley Nelson, 72, and his wife's craving for the beloved Italian dish paid off massively, with their visit leading them to a $1 million prize, according to the California Lottery. The Yolo County couple visited a Wine & Liquor store, which shares its building with Round Table Pizza, in the city of Winters, located about 40 miles west of Sacramento. Needing some change to tip service, Nelson broke a $100 bill by purchasing two lottery tickets. "I think it was $20, and I went to the truck and started scratching," Nelson told lottery officials in a news release. The retired veteran said he recalls telling his wife: "I think this one's a million, but I'm not sure." The pair proceeded to check their winning ticket through the California Lottery app, which verified he has scored a jackpot prize. 'My wife almost had a heart attack' The pair were in near complete disbelief that their decision to tip became incredibly and instantly profitable. "So, my wife almost had a heart attack," Nelson said. "And then we had to go in and buy the pizza. It was all because of her, she's the one that likes the pizza." McKinley said he has played the California Lottery for 40 years, the news release stated. "It took a long time to win," he quipped. With the money, Nelson said he will pay off his home, save a portion of it and also purchase a camper van, according to the California Lottery. With their new recreational vehicle, they plan drive to visit McKinley's family and even further to see his wife's family. Where can you buy lottery tickets? Why is Louisiana ranked the worst state on U.S. News & World Report's list of all 50 states?
U.S. News & World Report has released a list of the "Best States for 2025," in which all 50 states are ranked. This ranking assesses U.S. states across eight categories, including healthcare, education, natural environment, opportunity, economy, crime and corrections, infrastructure, as well as fiscal stability. Among the top 10 best states in the U.S., three each were located in the West, Midwest and Northeast, with only one Southern state making the top 10. On U.S. News & World Report's ranking of the "Best States for 2025," Louisiana came in last at number 50. When breaking down Louisiana's overall ranking, the state also came in last at number 50 in the crime and corrections, as well as economy, categories. Meanwhile, Louisiana's highest category rank was health care at number 44. Additionally, Louisiana ranked number 46 in education, 46 in fiscal stability, 48 in infrastructure, 49 in natural environment and 46 in opportunity. As Harvard & Other Schools Battle Trump Administration, Here's the Cost of America's Top Universities
The Trump administration has pulled funding from Columbia, Harvard and other top American universities in a battle over educational philosophies. As that dispute plays out in the courts, GOBankingRates decided to take a look at how much it costs to attend America's top universities. These institutions are not only some of the toughest universities to get accepted into — they also cost the most money. According to new research from GOBankingRates, a four-year degree from the nation's top 30 colleges comes with an estimated six-figure price tag. Be Aware: Learn More: For this analysis, researchers at GOBankingRates examined U.S. News & World Report's Best National University rankings to identify the top schools in America. From there, we calculated each university's individual expenses, including tuition, housing, fees and miscellaneous/personal expenses, to find the total yearly costs to attend as a first-year student. The University of Southern California is the most expensive university. Estimated attendance for one year is nearly $100,000, while a four-year estimate is $394,900. The four-year estimated attendance cost at the five most expensive colleges amounts to more than $385,000. With USC at No. 1, the remaining schools include Duke University (#2), Vanderbilt University (#3), Washington University in St. Louis (#4) and Brown University (#5). America's Ivy League is actually the most expensive. Brown (#5) was the only Ivy League school to rank among the top five, followed by Cornell (#6), Dartmouth College (#8) and Yale (#10). The remaining Ivy League institutions that ranked outside the top 10 include the University of Pennsylvania (#11), Columbia (#14), Princeton (#19) and Harvard (#23).
