India's active Covid cases rise to 6000; Kerala leads with sharp rise
New Delhi, June 8 (UNI) Active Covid-19 cases in India have crossed the 6,000 mark following a surge of nearly 400 new infections reported in the past 24 hours.
The country also recorded six Covid-related deaths during this period, with three fatalities reported from Kerala, as per the data available from the Union Health Ministry.
As of now, India has 6,133 active cases and a cumulative death toll of 65. Kerala continues to report the highest number of active infections, nearing the 2,000 mark, making it the state with the largest current caseload. In the last 24 hours, 378 new cases were reported from across the States.
After Kerala, Gujarat has emerged as the second-worst affected state, experiencing a significant rise with 105 new infections recorded between June 7 and June 8, pushing its active cases to over 820.
In Kerala, an increase of 144 cases in a single day underscores the high transmissibility of the JN.1 COVID-19 variant. Protein mutations such as NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, although associated with mild symptoms, are noted for their rapid spread.
West Bengal added 71 new cases, bringing its active case tally to 693. Delhi saw a comparatively modest increase of 21 new infections, with the capital's active caseload reaching 686.
Conversely, Karnataka reported a notable decline, with over 75 fewer active cases, bringing its total down to 366.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra is touching the 600-case mark. Notably, among the six recent fatalities, Kerala reported three deaths: a 51-year-old kidney transplant recipient, a 64-year-old man with diabetes, cancer, and kidney disease, and a 92-year-old individual with multiple comorbidities, including heart disease and cancer.
All suffered respiratory complications and tested positive for Covid-19.
Karnataka reported two deaths—a 46-year-old and a 78-year-old male—both of whom had pre-existing heart and lung conditions and were found to be Covid-positive during routine examinations. Tamil Nadu recorded one death due to Covid. Respiratory complications were the major factor for these fatalities.
Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely amid concerns over new variants and localised spikes in transmission.

Patna, June 8 (UNI) With 92 per cent of health facilities almost going paperless, Bihar has emerged as the national frontrunner in digital transformation in healthcare, achieving the number one rank in the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) implementation. He further noted that Bihar has received the highest incentives under the Central Government's Digital Health Incentive Scheme (DHIS), which are being reinvested to strengthen the state's digital health infrastructure. State Health Committee Administrative Officer Rajesh Kumar said that the state's BHAVYA (Bihar Health Applications Visionary Yojana for All) model, aligned with ABDM, has redefined healthcare accessibility and monitoring across the state. According to Kumar, paperless health facilities under digital healthcare were possible following the 'Scan and Share' initiative under ABDM, which allows patients to scan a QR code at the entry of a health facility and directly proceed to a consultation without the hassle of long queues or paperwork. This simple yet revolutionary step, along with widespread adoption of ABHA IDs (Ayushman Bharat Health Account), has dramatically reduced patient turnaround time in government hospitals, from over an hour earlier to an average of just 45 minutes now, covering consultation to medicine disbursal. Kumar further said that Bihar's state-of-the-art Command and Control Centre, a technological nerve centre in the state capital, monitors real-time feeds from all district hospitals and health facilities across the state. It ensures prompt alerts, compliance monitoring, and smooth operations at all levels. This setup is further backed by District Command Centres and Data Analytics Units, allowing proactive identification and management of potential health emergencies by tracking disease trends and patient data in real time. Meanwhile, a nine-member delegation recently visited Bihar on a three-day tour of the state to understand the scale and impact of this digital leap. Expert's ‘worse than Covid' warning after fungus smuggled into US from China
A top expert on China has warned that Fusarium graminearum, a fungus feared to have been smuggled into the US by two Chinese nationals, poses a potential agroterrorism threat, saying that the country could be hit by 'something worse" than Covid. According to an FBI criminal complaint, 34-year-old Zunyong Liu, a researcher in China, brought the fungus into the US in July 2024 while visiting his girlfriend, 33-year-old Yunqing Jian. Gordon G Chang, the author of 'China Is Going To War', has suggested catastrophic consequences if the US does not sever relations with China over the incident. 'The only way to stop this is to sever relations with China. And I know people think that's drastic, but we are being overwhelmed. We are going to get hit eventually. We are going to get hit really hard, not just with Covid, not just with fentanyl, but perhaps with something worse," he was quoted as saying by Fox News. According to Chang, the couple 'should be sent to Guantanamo" – the infamous US military facility linked to abuse and torture after the 9/11 terror attacks. He said this amounts to China waging war against the US. This comes five years after the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus, which many alleged was engineered in a Chinese lab. The outbreak had brought the world to a standstill and affected millions of people, killing hundreds of thousands. Agricultural experts, however, doubted the claims that the crop fungus is a threat, as it is already widespread in the US and poses little food safety risk. According to the experts quoted in a report by news agency Reuters, it will be ineffective as an agricultural terrorism weapon and can be managed by fungicides, resistant wheat strains, and testing. The US Department of Justice has said that the Fusarium graminearum fungus is a dangerous biological pathogen with the potential to be used as an agricultural terrorism weapon. The department said in a statement that the fungus causes 'head blight" in some crops and is responsible for billions of dollars in economic losses globally each year.

Hyderabad, June 7 (UNI) Global pharma major Lupin Limited (Lupin) announced on Saturday that it has received tentative approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (U.S. FDA) for its Abbreviated New Drug Application for Oxcarbazepine Extended-Release (ER) Tablets, 150 mg, 300 mg, and 600 mg. This product would be manufactured at Lupin's Nagpur facility in India, the Pharma company said in a release. Oxcarbazepine ER Tablets, 150 mg, 300 mg, and 600 mg are bioequivalent to Oxtellar XR® ER Tablets, 150 mg, 300 mg, and 600 mg, of Supernus Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and are indicated for the treatment of partial-onset seizures in patients 6 years of age and older.
