Not against Vedan, but discuss academic subjects as required: SUCC

T'puram: Save University Campaign Committee (SUCC) has denied the allegation that it opposed the inclusion of the work of rapper Hirandas Murali, popularly known as Vedan, in the Calicut University Malayalam literature syllabus.
Committee chairperson R S Sasikumar said that the lack of academic common sense in asking BA Malayalam students to compare the music of Michael Jackson and Vedan should not be viewed as a plot against the rapper.
"Vedan is an emerging artist in Kerala. Let the young man grow. Do not cast a shadow over his future by dragging him into controversies. Discuss academic subjects as academic subjects," the committee said.
"Vedan's rap and Michael Jackson's pop are unique musical blends.
Music is prioritised over poetry. Those creating the Malayalam BA syllabus should not ignore this. The most important issue is whether the rap song given as a study subject for students is appropriate for Malayalam degree students. The rap 'Bhoomi Njan Vazhunnaidam' cannot be claimed to have literary merit. There is an allegation that party politics is the reason for its inclusion," SUCC said in a statement here.
SUCC also said that it is unclear whether literature and rap music should be compared.
"Kuchelavritham was written by Muringoor Shankaran Potty. It depicts the devotional singing of the poor Brahmin Kuchelan during his great meeting with his friend Lord Krishna. Many great artists have performed this before, with slight variations, devoutly. Young singer Gauri Lakshmi beautifully sang this Kathakali Padam and released an album.
However, its visual presentation has been criticised for not aligning with devotion and not being suitable for Kuchelavritham," the statement said.
"But that's not the issue. Comparing these two renditions requires significant musical understanding. How can students who take Malayalam as an optional subject without a music requirement make this comparison? This could definitely be included in the syllabus for music degree students studying classical music," the committee said.

What is the story of Drishyam 3? Jeethu Joseph spills tea on Mohanlal's return as Georgekutty

Mohanlal recently announced work on Drishyam 3. The project will be directed by Jeethu Joseph once again and this time, the Malayalam film will release at the same time as the launch of its Hindi version. Jeethu Joseph spills beans on what Drishyam 3 will be about Attending a recent event for the Film and Drama Club of Nirmala College in Muvattupuzha, Jeethu Joseph left everyone intrigued as he spilled beans on what exactly the audiences can expect from Drishyam 3, in terms of its storyline. Without giving any detailed spoilers, he mentioned that this time, the film would be more about Georgekutty's family and not any external interference. He said, 'Drishyam 3 is more of a story that unfolds within the family, focusing on their evolving dynamics and changing perspectives. It explores how the characters, especially the children, grow and process past events differently over time.' Jeethu Joseph about completing the script of Drishyam 3 In another excerpt of the same interview, the filmmaker discussed the exhaustive process he underwent for completing the script work of the first draft of the movie. He highlighted being under a lot of pressure for the same. In his words, 'Between the shoots of Mirage and Valathu Vashathe Kallan, I would wake up every day at 3:30 a.m. to write. It was a real struggle, physically and mentally exhausting. But yesterday, I finally felt a sense of relief.' When will Drishyam 3 go on floors? As per a previous report by Cinema For You, it was revealed that Jeethu Joseph and Mohanlal would begin shooting for Drishyam 3 in September 2025. This also indicated that the two of them once again pushed back the date of their other impending project, Ram. An official confirmation is awaited on the matter. Jeethu Joseph reveals why plans to begin Ajay Devgn's Drishyam 3 before Mohanlal's were abandoned; says climax was first part that took shape: ‘Lalettan asked me to…'

Although a stellar lineup of highly anticipated films is brewing across nearly all major industries in the country, the one project that's arguably the most awaited, transcending language barriers, is the third installment in director Jeethu Joseph's crime thriller franchise Drishyam. Following the official announcement earlier this year that the threequel is in development, fans have not only been ecstatic but also actively speculating about what Jeethu might craft this time to maintain or even elevate the legacy of one of Indian cinema's most successful film series. Given that the development of remakes in other languages also hinges on the progress of Jeethu's work, it's safe to say that even the bigwigs in other industries currently have their eyes on the Malayalam filmmaker as they await a finalised draft of his script. Just days after revealing that he has completed writing the climax of Drishyam 3, the writer-director has now offered further updates on the ambitious project, its production timeline and why initial plans to launch the Hindi version before the Malayalam one were abandoned. Revealing that filming will likely begin by mid-September, Jeethu said that the scripting is currently underway and not yet 100% complete. 'When I finished Drishyam 2, I already had some thoughts about a possible continuation. Even when Lalettan watched Drishyam 2 at my home theatre. I think, because he interpreted the way I crafted the climax, he asked me if a third part was possible. Though I was not sure about what to say, at that time, I told him that if we ever went for another sequel, I wish for the climax of the movie to be crafted in a particular way. I shared my thoughts with him,' he said during a chat with Mathrubhumi. The filmmaker continued, 'Lalettan liked it and asked me to have a go at it, and if it comes right, let's move ahead with the story and he left. With the thoughts of the story brewing up in my mind, I finally ended up with the story for Drishyam 3. It was the climax of Drishyam 3 that first came to my mind.' Jeethu Joseph also shared that the makers of the Bollywood version are eagerly waiting for his final script. 'People from Bollywood have indeed approached me for the Hindi rights and adaptation. They're waiting for the script to be ready. There was even a proposal to shoot both the Hindi and Malayalam versions simultaneously, but no firm decisions have been made yet. Initially, there were efforts to begin with the Hindi version, but they faced potential legal complications, so they had to step back.' He also mentioned receiving story suggestions from fans. 'I received many emails with suggested stories and twists for the movie, but without even reading, I had deleted them. I don't want my creative process to be influenced or distracted,' he added. The original Drishyam, featuring Mohanlal and Meena in the lead roles, hit screens in December 2013 and became an instant hit, thanks to a gripping script with a jaw-dropping climax that gave it a strong word of mouth. It eventually became the highest-grossing Malayalam film of its time and was later remade in Kannada (Drishya), Telugu (Drushyam), Tamil (Papanasam), Hindi (Drishyam), Sinhala (Dharmayuddhaya) and Mandarin Chinese (Sheep Without a Shepherd). Indonesian, Korean and English remakes are also currently in development. The sequel, Drishyam 2, released in 2021, saw Mohanlal and Meena reprising their roles. It too was remade in Kannada (Drishya 2), Telugu (Drushyam 2) and Hindi (Drishyam 2).

Drishyam director recalls issuing warning to makers of Ajay Devgn starrer

Jeethu Joseph, the original writer-director of the 'Drishyam' films, has postponed the early production of the Hindi version of 'Drishyam 3', starring Ajay Devgn. This decision ensures that the Malayalam version, with Mohanlal in the lead, will proceed first. Joseph revealed in an interview that the makers of the Hindi version initially attempted to start production earlier, but backed off after receiving a legal in an interview with Mathrubhumi stated, 'There were demands on making Malayalam and Hindi versions together, but we haven't decided on those matters. There were initially some plans to start in Hindi first, but after a hint was given that this would be dealt with legally, they backed off from it.' The Malayalam version is expected to commence filming in October this year, while more details about the Hindi version remain Jeethu Joseph is putting his efforts into the screenplay of 'Drishyam 3'. He recently mentioned at a college event that he had finished writing the climax of the film, stating, 'I finished writing the climax of 'Drishyam 3' last night. I've been under immense pressure for a long time.' The director is also juggling two other projects, 'Mirage' and 'Valathu Vashathe Kallan', which has added to his workload. The 'Drishyam' franchise began with the 2013 Malayalam film, which became a major success and was subsequently remade in several languages. The narrative revolves around Georgekutty, a man who goes to great lengths to protect his family from a suspicious missing person case. In an exclusive conversation with Mohanlal said, ''Drishyam' has done great things. It gave a great uplift to the Malayalam industry. We produced that film during the Covid-led pandemic. That film was viewed by the entire India. Now they know about the Malayalam industry. They started watching more Malayalam films [after 'Drishyam']. It became a blessing for the industry, [even] internationally.'On the work front, Mohanlal, having delivered two blockbusters already in 2025 with 'L2: Empuraan' and 'Thudarum', will next be seen in 'Hridayapoorvam'. Ajay Devgn was last seen in the hit film 'Raid 2' and will next be seen in 'Son of Sardaar 2', which is slated to release in theatres on August 1.- Ends
