Teenager who planned mosque attack in Scotland detained for 10 years

A teenager who listed Hitler, Mussolini and the Norwegian mass murderer Anders Breivik as his inspirations and who planned a terrorist attack on a mosque has been sentenced to 10 years in custody. The 17-year-old, who cannot be named because of his age, had intended to set fire to an Islamic centre in Greenock, Inverclyde, after befriending the imam and mapping out the building's interior on his phone. The teenager was arrested at the door of the centre in January this year. He was carrying a military-style rucksack that contained a German-manufactured Glock-type air pistol, ammunition, ball bearings, gas cartridges and aerosol cans, according to prosecutors. He was sentenced at the high court in Glasgow on Thursday after pleading guilty to two terrorism charges, with a further eight years of supervision on licence upon release. In his sentencing statement, Lord Arthurson said: 'What you had in mind was what can properly be characterised as a quite diabolical atrocity involving extreme violence and multiple deaths. You even requested that your attack be livestreamed. Your conduct was only stopped by your arrest, when you were quite literally at the very door of the centre.' Prosecutors said the teenager, who became radicalised online, began plotting the attack in December 2024 and joined the mosque's WhatsApp group saying he was 'looking for guidance', later winning the trust of the imam during several visits. Meanwhile he was boasting of his plans to set the centre on fire on the social media platform Telegram and later filmed himself wandering the corridors, including footage showing him superimposing a hand carrying a semi-automatic pistol. Sineidin Corrins, deputy procurator fiscal for specialist casework at the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, said: 'This heinous plan to attack those within his own local community was prepared and driven by racial and religiously motivated hatred, and showed that he not only held neo-Nazi beliefs but was about to act on them to cause pain and suffering'.

Georgia man may have tried to enter CDC campus two days before he attacked agency

The Georgia man who shot at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention buildings on Aug. 8 apparently tried to enter the campus two days earlier but was turned away by security, according to an internal CDC email. Security video indicates 'a very high likelihood' that the 30-year-old shooter — Patrick Joseph White — tried to enter the campus on the late afternoon of Aug. 6, the email said. 'The video evidence does not 100% confirm the person's identity' but law enforcement thinks it was White, according to the email sent to CDC employees on Thursday. 'The probing of a site is a common practice for individuals planning to engage in violent acts,' Jeff Williams of the CDC's security office wrote in the email. The Associated Press viewed a copy of the email, which was first reported on by Stat News. White blamed the COVID-19 vaccine for making him depressed and suicidal. On Aug. 8, he opened fire from a spot at a pharmacy across the street from CDC's main entrance. He killed a police officer and fired more than 180 shots into CDC buildings before killing himself. No one at CDC was injured. Williams, in his email, said: 'Due to our existing security protocols, the shooter did not attempt to enter campus on Friday, August 8, prior to the attack.' A spokesperson for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the investigation is active and ongoing. "We have no further information to release at this time,' said the spokesperson, Sara Lue. ___ AP reporter Jeff Amy in Atlanta contributed. ___ The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Science and Educational Media Group and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Father-of-two who was gunned down in drive-by shooting outside pizza takeaway had beaten lung cancer just six months prior, heartbroken family reveal

A father-of-two who was killed in a horrific drive-by shooting had just beaten lung cancer months before his tragic death. Dale Stogden, 50, known as Brett, had only received the all clear in February after several rounds of chemo and radiotherapy. The former security guard was gunned down outside a pizza takeaway in Wakefield on August 12. A police investigation was launched following the shooting and three men have since been charged with Brett's murder. The trio appeared before Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday, where they pleaded not guilty and were all remanded to custody. A trial date has been set for February 24, 2026. Mr Stogden leaves behind two daughters - Piper, 18, and Alyssa, 20 - who led the tributes to their father describing him as the 'kindest and the funniest person in world'. And speaking to the Daily Mail on Thursday, their former foster mother Diane Green, 60, who is raising money for Mr Stogden's funeral through a Gofundme page, described him as a 'gentle giant'. She said: 'Everyone said he was a lovely man, always smiling and everybody described him as always being happy and smiling and joking. 'He was a gentle giant. 'He was always very pleasant and polite to me over the years.' Ms Green, from Barnsley, fostered the pair in 2013 when they were seven and eight years old but is no longer living with them. 'I was the first port of call,' she said. 'They called me when the news broke. 'I was at the hospital with the girls as their support. Contrary to some reports, I was not there to identify the body. 'I always kept contact with the family, including him. She told the Daily Mail how Piper and Alyssa's relationship with their father had been evolving in the run up to his heartless murder. 'They were building a different kind of relationship, as young women getting to know their dad,' Ms Green added. 'They were going out with him for meals, breakfast and walks along the canal. 'They also enjoyed listening to music together and having movie nights. 'They were just getting to know each other.' The former foster mother also revealed Mr Stogden had just recovered from his lung cancer ordeal months before the drive-by shooting. 'Brett was diagnosed with lung cancer last year. 'Alyssa managed his hospital appointments. He was given the all clear in February this year.' She added that his daughters had been battling through after the heartbreaking news this month but were struggling to pay for the funeral. Ms Green said: 'The whole thing is unbelievable - it is not supposed to happen to your family. 'They're quite resilient young girls. They're doing their best to try to give him a fitting send off. 'It is upsetting them, organising the funeral after having to also go to the hospital and identify the body. 'It is not something you expect to be doing at that age.' In a statement, his daughters said: 'Over this last year dad battled lung cancer - Alyssa organised all of his hospital appointments and went with him to St James' Hospital in Leeds. 'He got the all clear in February and now he is gone because of one viscous cruel act. 'Our favourite memories with him were when the 3 of us went to out for breakfast he was always joking around. 'Sometimes times we would walk to the canal and sit on bench and watch the ducks whilst listening to music. 'We would have a movie night watch the Simpsons & order deserts these are treasured memories. 'Dad had the biggest heart of gold and no matter what he was going through he always had a smile on his face. 'We will always remember dad as the kindest and the funniest person in world we will miss his smile, funny jokes and the good times we had together. 'We will really miss him, his voice, his smile and his hugs especially his hugs he was a gentle giant. 'We will miss and love you forever Dad our memories will keep you close I our hearts. 'We would like to thank West Yorkshire Police for dealing with our dads death so quickly and efficiently.' South Yorkshire Police have since confirmed Marc Carter, 19, Adam Ahmed, 20, and Leyton Davies, 27, have been charged with the murder of Mr Stogden. A spokesperson for the force said: 'Police investigating the death of a man in Wakefield have charged three males with his murder. 'The charges relate to the death of Brett Stogden, who died after a shot was fired from a vehicle on Doncaster Road on the evening of Tuesday, 12 August.'
