300 terribly sick Gaza children to be evacuated to UK for treatment
Hundreds of seriously ill children from Gaza will be evacuated to the UK for treatment by the NHS, as part of a new plan due to be announced within weeks, according to a report. Up to 300 young people will enter the UK for free medical care, a scheme which will run in parallel with another similar operation run by the Project Pure Hope group, a senior Whitehall source told The Times. Since the war began in October 2023, only three children from Gaza have been issued medical visas for the UK, under the Project Pure Hope scheme, which is funded entirely by private donations. The news comes amid a starvation crisis in the ravaged Gaza Strip, where partial and complete Israeli blockades on aid have been behind more than 160 malnutrition-related deaths, including 92 children, health authorities in Gaza say. Ted Chaiban, Unicef's deputy executive director for humanitarian action and supply operations, said on Friday that more than 320,000 young children are at risk of acute malnutrition, after a recent trip to Israel, Gaza and the occupied West Bank. But Unrwa, which was once the largest provider of humanitarian assistance for Palestinians in Gaza, says it has been entirely sidelined. UK to announce plan to bring Palestinian children for NHS care 'within weeks'
The UK government will reportedly announce a plan to bring up to 300 acutely ill Palestinian children from Gaza for free medical treatment in the NHS "within weeks". Each child brought to the UK will be accompanied by a parent or guardian and siblings if neccessary with some expected never to return home, according to The Sunday Times which was briefed by a senior Whitehall source. The policy shift follows a 20-month campaign by doctors, lawyers and humanitarians who have called on the government to establish a scheme for Palestinian children similar to one created for Ukrainians. Israel's assault on Gaza that followed the Hamas-led 7 October attacks have destroyed Gaza's healthcare system. At least 12,000 adults and children are in need of medical evacuations, according to the World Health Organisation. Since October 2023, over 7,000 Palestinians have been evacuated, mostly to Egypt, the UAE and Qatar, with Jordan, European countries - particularly Italy, Spain and Romania - and the US taking much of the rest. The UK has allowed three Palestinian children into the country for privately funded medical treatment, including Majd al-Shagnobi, 15, who arrived last week. UAE delivers 65 tonnes of critical medical supplies for Gaza
The UAE has delivered 65 tonnes of essential medicines and aid supplies to WHO warehouses, in preparation for distribution to hospitals across the Gaza Strip. The shipment includes 11 trucks carrying critical supplies to ease the acute medical shortage in the Strip. It comes after the UAE carried out the the 60th airdrop of humanitarian aid as part of the 'Operation Birds of Goodness'' campaign. It aims to deliver critical relief to areas that are inaccessible by land due to current field conditions. Each drop includes a variety of food items and urgent humanitarian supplies. The total amount of aid airdropped has exceeded 3,807 tonnes, comprising various food and relief materials designated to assist Palestinians in the most severely affected areas. Alongside the airdrops, the UAE also sent 58 aid trucks into Gaza last Wednesday through multiple land crossings. The UAE's Operation Chivalrous Knight 3 campaign aims to provide multi-sectoral support to Palestinians in Gaza, including in food, shelter, education and healthcare.
