Special focus on ensuring women's safety, tackling cybercrime: Uttar Pradesh DGP

NEWLY APPOINTED officiating Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna on Monday emphasised that alongside a firm stance against crime and criminals, there would be zero tolerance for anyone attempting to disturb the law and order system. Krishna, a 1991-batch officer, also underlined that the rule of law would be upheld at all costs and a peaceful environment would be maintained throughout the state. He made the remarks while interacting with mediapersons at his office. The DGP presented a ten-point action plan aimed at the effective functioning of the police department. This plan includes several reform measures, strategic initiatives and essential coordination with key stakeholders to provide citizens with a more efficient and accountable police service. One of the key points is a policy of 'zero tolerance towards crime and criminals, under which coordinated and decisive action would be taken against organised crime.' The DGP also highlighted the importance of women's empowerment and protection, pointing out that special focus would be placed on preventing and addressing all forms of crimes against women. Efforts would be directed towards ensuring their safety and also strengthening their sense of security and confidence, the senior officer said. He said that effective redressal of public grievances would be a top priority. At every level, a sensitive and responsive approach will be adopted to ensure that citizens' concerns are heard and resolved promptly. He also emphasised that modern strategies would be continuously adopted and upgraded to stay ahead of evolving cyber threats. In recent years, particularly after the Covid-19 pandemic, cybercrime has emerged as a significant threat to citizens, he said. The DGP also said that keeping in view the needs and expectations of the public, police services will be made more efficient, responsive and citizen-friendly. He pointed out that special attention would be given to administrative and welfare-related issues that impact the performance of police personnel. Police welfare would be a priority, ensuring that officers remain motivated and dedicated to fulfilling their responsibilities effectively. He added that the skills and expertise of officers will be identified and utilised in a focused manner to achieve higher objectives, thereby fostering a culture of excellence within the force. Many officers and personnel possess specialized training and unique capabilities, which will be put to effective use. To enhance efficiency and transparency, an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based system will be introduced in the police department. This system will assist in accurate data management, enabling officers to perform their duties more effectively and make optimal use of available resources. The DGP further emphasised that police administration is a continuous learning process, where each experience offers valuable lessons. By regularly reviewing the outcomes of day-to-day decisions, the department has achieved meaningful improvements. It is well recognized that responsible governance requires a robust system to ensure that citizens consistently receive effective and reliable police services. On Saturday, the Uttar Pradesh government appointed Rajeev Krishna as the new officiating DGP. He replaced 1990-batch IPS officer Prashant Kumar, who served as officiating DGP since February last year, and retired on Saturday. Krishna, who hails from Gautam Buddh Nagar, was Director of Vigilance Establishment in the UP Police, with the additional charge of Chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board (UPPRPB) since February last year. In March, shortly after the government cancelled the police constable recruitment exam over allegations of a paper leak, he was assigned an additional role as the UPPRPB chairperson.

Andhra Pradesh government to streamline New Development Bank-funded road projects, to release ₹200 crore

Vijayawada: The state government has decided to streamline projects taken up with financial assistance from the New Development Bank (NDB). In 2021, the state govt, during the YSRCP regime, signed an agreement with NDB to develop approximately 1,300 km of roads. After returning to power, the NDA government decided to revive the project by providing a state grant. The govt has decided to remove works that have not commenced and will focus on ongoing projects and those for which the tender process was completed. The NDB had promised to grant a loan to widen single-lane roads from mandal headquarters to district headquarters into two-lane roads. Although the govt initially planned to widen 1,300 km of roads, only about 71 km were completed due to financial constraints following the COVID-19 pandemic. Chief minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu reviewed the project and directed officials to prepare a fresh detailed project report (DPR). He also instructed the finance department to release ₹200 crore to clear contractors' dues and expedite the balance projects. The state govt has trimmed the project to around 900 km to complete the first phase as soon as possible and has directed officials to prepare a blueprint for the second phase during 2025-26.
