Mixed emotions coursing through , yet here is a chance to explore the NEW. Always start afresh . Believe in yourself and make the most of opportunities. They're there today. The future isn't here yet. 🙂 Live it up.". Fans dropped heart emojis in the comment section.
Veteran stars Sharmila Tagore and Simi Garewal lit up the red carpet at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where they reunited for a historic screening of Satyajit Ray's Aranyer Din Ratri (Night and Day in the Forest), a newly restored 4K version of the 1970 classic. Their reunion image was shared by Vogue India and quickly went viral. Fans across generations celebrated the moment, calling it 'iconic" and a 'perfect tribute to Indian cinema's golden era."
In a conversation with ETimes, Sharmila reflected on the enduring presence of Indian cinema at Cannes. She said, 'Chetan Anand's Neecha Nagar in 1946 was the first Indian film to win the Grand Prix du Festival International du Film, the precursor to the Palme d'Or." She also praised Payal Kapadia's All We Imagine As Light, which won the Grand Prix last year.
'Indian representation has always been there. My film Devi was nominated in 1962 for Palme d'Or. There is an Indian pavilion as well. A lot of people showcase Indian films there. Our films have been recognised, and Cannes gives them a wider platform," she added.

When Lata Mangeshkar REFUSED to sing for Raj Kapoor's films after demanding royalty: I will sit outside your house till…'

The collaboration between Lata Mangeshkar and Raj Kapoor, though legendary, faced turbulence during 'Satyam Shivam Sundaram' when Kapoor replaced Mangeshkar's brother as composer without her consent. This led to a rift, with Mangeshkar demanding royalties and avoiding Kapoor. Eventually, through mediation and Kapoor's persistence, they reconciled, allowing Mangeshkar to continue singing for his films. The legendary collaboration between Lata Mangeshkar and Raj Kapoor gave Bollywood some of its most timeless melodies, but behind the scenes, their relationship was marked by moments of tension and disagreement. One such episode during the making of Satyam Shivam Sundaram revealed the complex dynamics between the iconic singer and the visionary filmmaker—an episode that nearly ended their partnership but ultimately showcased their resilience and mutual respect. Tensions rose during Satyam Shivam Sundaram when Raj Kapoor asked Lata to bring her brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar on board for the music. She agreed, but was later shocked to learn that he had been replaced by Laxmikant-Pyarelal—without her knowledge. This incident led Lata to refuse to sing for Raj for a period, and their relationship was further strained by disagreements over royalties. Despite the ups and downs, their creative partnership left an indelible mark on Indian film music. In Raj Kapoor: The One and Only Showman, Raj Kapoor's daughter Ritu Nanda detailed a pivotal moment that strained the filmmaker's long-standing collaboration with Lata Mangeshkar. At Raj's request, Lata persuaded her brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar—who was initially reluctant—to compose the music for Satyam Shivam Sundaram, a suggestion originally made by singer Mukesh. However, while Lata was away on a US tour, Raj Kapoor quietly replaced Hridaynath with composer duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal without informing her. The unexpected move caused a serious rift between Lata and Raj, marking a low point in their otherwise iconic association. Lata Mangeshkar found the situation deeply embarrassing, especially since her brother Hridaynath had accepted the film project on her recommendation, only to face negative press that suggested otherwise. Hridaynath felt offended and humiliated by the turn of events. On returning from her tour, Lata confronted Raj Kapoor, questioning why he had replaced her brother after she had convinced him to take on the project at Raj's own request. According to Ritu Nanda, Raj Kapoor's daughter and author of Raj Kapoor: The One and Only Showman, this incident became a major point of conflict between Lata and Raj. Following the fallout, Lata began demanding royalties from Raj for the songs she recorded, as she did with other producers, and reportedly caused delays in recording sessions, making their professional relationship increasingly strained. To ease the tension between Lata Mangeshkar and Raj Kapoor, Pandit Narendra Sharma, a fatherly figure to Lata, stepped in and persuaded her to lend her voice to Satyam Shivam Sundaram, believing no other singer could do justice to the songs. However, Lata set strict conditions: she agreed to sing only if she could avoid interacting with anyone in the studio. She went as far as requesting Laxmikant Pyarelal to prevent Raj Kapoor from entering the studio during her recording sessions. Lata sang the song and left immediately without speaking to anyone. Around that time, the film Bobby was in production, and she contacted Raj Kapoor to inform him that the singers' association had instructed singers to collect royalties directly from producers. Raj's response was sharp: "I have come here to do business, not distribute royalty." Lata, unfazed, replied, "You have come here for business, and I have come to the zoo," recalling the exchange with a mix of humor and frustration. Tensions reached a boiling point, prompting Raj Kapoor to ask Laxmikant Pyarelal to mediate the ongoing cold war between him and Lata. Though she initially resisted his efforts, Lata eventually received a call from Raj Kapoor, who playfully warned her, 'If you refuse to sing for my film, I will put up a tent right outside your house.' The two eventually reconciled, with Lata going on to sing for Bobby and all the other films Raj Kapoor made throughout his career. Made in Rs 50 lakh, this film won 4 National Awards, is set to re-release in theatres, remake was a super flop, lead actors are... Film Umrao Jaan , released in 1981, is considered one of Rekha's most compelling and beautiful works. Her portrayal of Amiran, a courtesan-poetess, is regarded as one of the finest performances in Indian cinema's history, earning her National Award for Best Actress. Besides that, the period drama won many accolades, including 3 National Awards, and 2 Filmfare awards for Best Director and Best Music Director. Its evergreen songs like- Dil Cheez Kya Hai, In Aankhon Ki Masti, and Justuju Jiski Thi remains loved across generations. Umrao Jaan was remade in 2006, starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan in lead roles. Well, cinemagoers can now relieve the magic and grandeur of Rekha's Umrao Jaan, as it is set to re-release on the big screen. Not just that, the film will be beautifully showcased, resorted in 4K resolution, which is accomplished by National Film Archive of India (NFAI) and National Film Development Corporation (NFDC). Reflecting on the re-release, veteran actress Rekha said, 'Umrao Jaan is not just a film I acted in — she lives within me, breathes through me, even now. At the time, none of us could have imagined the timelessness of the film, the way it would gently etch itself into the soul of Indian cinema. To see it return to the big screen is like watching an old love letter being opened by a new generation. My heart is full.' The Director of cult classic, Muzaffar Ali, also spoke about its re-release. He shared, 'Umrao Jaan was not just a film—it was a journey into the soul of a lost culture, a forgotten tehzeeb. Through her pain, poetry, and grace, we tried to resurrect the elegance of an era where love and longing spoke in verse. I had actors who brought a lot of heft to their characters, and then there was Rekha, who lived Umrao Jaan and truly immortalised it. I am thrilled that the film is back on the big screen for a whole new generation to discover a time and culture that's very much a part of our being.' Bankrolled by SK Jain & Sons and Integrated Films, Umrao Jaan is scheduled to be re-release on 27th June. Apart from Rekha, the film's illustrious cast includes Farooq Shaikh, Naseeruddin Shah, Raj Babbar, Shaukat Kaifi, Dina Pathak, Gajanan Jagirdar and Farrukh Jaffar, who marked her acting debut with Umrao Jaan.
