OGW among two detained under PSA in J&K's Kishtwar
The duo was repeatedly involved in activities prejudicial to public peace and national security.
Kishtwar senior superintendent of police (SSP) Naresh Singh said one of the accused, Rustam Ali Bagwan ,son of Fateh Mohammad Bagwan of Hunjala was an active OGW. 'He was found providing logistic support and maintaining close links with terrorist elements operating in the region. His involvement posed a serious threat to the security and sovereignty of the union territory,' said the SSP.
Acting on credible inputs, a detailed dossier was prepared by Kishtwar police, and upon approval from the competent authority, he was booked under PSA and lodged in Kotbhalwal Central Jail in Jammu, he added.
The second accused, Arshad Hussain, son of Abdul Wahid Sheikh of Guriyan was a habitual burglar with a long history of criminal activities.
'Despite being involved in multiple theft cases and having received several warnings, he continued his unlawful behaviour, creating fear and insecurity among the general public. On the orders of the Kishtwar district magistrate, he was detained under the PSA and has been lodged in Kathua district jail,' said the SSP.
The detention orders in both cases were issued by the Kistwar district magistrate.

Two Lashkar-e-Taiba Terrorist Associates Apprehended In Bandipora
Two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist associates were apprehended today in the Malpora Nowgam area of Sumbal district, Bandipora. The arrests were made during a joint checking operation conducted by the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Indian Army. The arrested individuals have been identified as Ab Majid Gojri, a resident of SK Bala, and Ab Hamid Dar, a resident of Vijpara Hajin. Two Chinese grenades, two UBGL (Under Barrel Grenade Launcher) grenades, and 10 rounds of AKs (AK-series rifles) were recovered from their possession. Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in this regard, and further investigation is underway. The police are also investigating their level of involvement with the terrorist organisation and if these arrests are linked to earlier busted Lashkar-e-Taiba modules in Bandipora. This incident highlights the ongoing efforts by security forces to counter terrorism and maintain peace and order in the region. Operation Akhal The longest counter-terrorism operation, Operation Akhal, in the Akhal forest area of Kulgam district, was called off earlier after 12 days. The operation was launched on August 1 after receiving intelligence inputs about the presence of a terrorist group in the area. The operation was launched based on credible intelligence inputs indicating the presence of 5-6 heavily armed terrorists in the dense Akhal Khulsan forest. The forest is rugged terrain with dense trees, caves, and steep slopes. It was part of a massive crackdown on terrorist networks following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025. The operation ended without recovering any more terrorist bodies, raising questions about the effectiveness of the troops.

J-K Police top Independence Day gallantry awards list
The Centre said on Thursday that 1,090 police, fire, civil defence and home guard, and correctional services personnel will be awarded gallantry and service medals on the occasion of the 79th Independence Day on Friday. Among the 233 gallantry awards announced, the highest, 127, will go to the Jammu and Kashmir Police for their counter-terrorist operations, followed by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), with 20, for operating in various Left Wing Extremism-affected states. The Uttar Pradesh Police will receive 17 gallantry awards, followed by the Border Security Force with 16, and the Chhattisgarh Police with 14. Among the 1,090 people being awarded, '233 personnel have been awarded the Medal for Gallantry (GM), 99 personnel awarded the President's Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) and 758 personnel awarded the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM),' a Union Home Ministry spokesperson said. The President's Medal for Gallantry is awarded on the 'ground of rare conspicuous act of gallantry and conspicuous act of gallantry respectively in saving life and property, or in preventing crime or arresting criminals'. 'Out of 99 President's Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM), 89 have been awarded to police service, five to fire service, three to civil defence and home guard service and two to correctional service. 'Bedroom Jihadis' the new nuisance for security in J&K
Jammu: Security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir are grappling with a new and insidious threat in the form of "bedroom jihadis" -- people who manipulate social media from the safety of their homes to spread misinformation and incite communal discord, officials said. This kind of enemy, far removed from the traditional armed terrorists, is at the heart of a sophisticated cross-border effort to destabilise the region, the officials said. An in-depth investigation has uncovered a network of social media handles, believed to be controlled by terror groups and their sympathisers in Pakistan, that have been actively intruding into local digital spaces, disseminating inflammatory content and propaganda with the clear objective of creating sectarian clashes and unrest in the Kashmir valley. "After years of fighting armed terrorists, security agencies have been facing this hidden enemy in which these new-age jihadis use computers and smartphones to wage war from just about anywhere, spreading rumours and influencing youths," an official in the know of the developments said. The trend emerged in 2017 but ended after an effective crackdown with curbs on the Internet post abrogation of the special status of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir in 2019. After the successful completion of assembly elections last year, the "bedroom jihadis" have surfaced again, possibly with an aim to destablise the elected government and create a sense of unrest, the officials said. Security agencies have also uncovered a sophisticated and concerted effort by terror groups and their sympathisers operating from across the border to use social media platforms to incite sectarian clashes and destabilise the region. The investigation, which has been underway for several weeks, involved scrutinising thousands of social media posts, comments and private messages and its analysis provided compelling evidence of a direct link between these malicious online activities and handlers located in Pakistan. During Muharram days observed by the Shia community recently, there was tension between the two sects of the Muslim community over a post but effective handling by Srinagar police doused the fire before it could spread, the officials said. Former Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police Kuldeep Khoda says the successful identification and disruption of this cross-border social media plot highlight the evolving nature of threats to security in Jammu and Kashmir. "While traditional terror activities remain a concern, the digital battlefield is increasingly becoming a front where external forces seek to destabilise the region by exploiting local tensions, which should be nipped in the bud," he feels.
