Litter clean-up under way at A1 'grot spots' in Lincolnshire
Work is under way to remove rubbish dumped by motorists along a stretch of the A1 in Lincolnshire.South Kesteven District Council said the project was being funded from a £60,000 budget agreed in a cross-party vote to tackle "specific grot spots".The affected area includes stretches from South Witham up through Colsterworth, Grantham and Claypole.It comes after discarded drinks cans, fast-food wrappers and plastic prompted complaints from residents.
'Selfish individuals'
Councillor Rhys Baker, cabinet member for waste and the environment, said the initiative marked "a significant investment" towards keeping the road network clean and safe.However, he added: "The simple truth is that we wouldn't need to do this if it wasn't for the actions of selfish individuals who illegally throw their waste and litter out of the vehicle window, impacting our countryside and threatening our wildlife."In order to carry out the work safely, the council said it had struck a partnership with roadworks contractors to allow litter-picking teams to be deployed at night in designated areas where roadworks were taking place.The authority said it had invested in new bins for A1 laybys in the district, which it said were emptied three times a week.Officials previously said the cost of tackling litter on the A1 was taking money away from other services.Listen to highlights from Lincolnshire on BBC Sounds, watch the latest episode of Look North or tell us about a story you think we should be covering here.

Hundreds of vintage motorbikes to join Banbury Run
About 300 vintage motorcycles are set to take part in an annual ride out, which is celebrating is 75th year. The Vintage Motor Cycle Club Banbury Run will be hosted at the British Motor Museum in Gaydon, Warwickshire, on Sunday 8 June. During the course of the day, the motorcyclists will be riding up Sun Rising Hill, near Tysoe, which was once used to test out newly manufactured run began in 1949 and Tom Caren, show manager at the British Motor Museum, said its longevity demonstrated just how "immensely popular" it was. He said the hundreds of vintage motorcycles in action promised a "motoring spectacle". The museum will be open from 9:00 until 17:00 BST, with the first bikes departing at 10:00. Police appeal after van driver in his 20s dies in M1 crash
A man in his 20s died in a crash that closed a section of a motorway for several hours, police services were called to the southbound M1 between junctions 15 near Northampton and 14 for Milton Keynes at about 17:45 BST on Police said a Vauxhall Combi van was involved in a single-vehicle collision and its driver was pronounced dead at the appealed for witnesses or anyone who may have seen the van before the incident to get in touch.
