Blackstone buys Kolkata's South City Mall for ₹3,250 crore

Mint8 hours ago

Bengaluru: Global asset manager Blackstone Group has acquired South City Mall in Kolkata for ₹ 3,250 crore from South City Projects, in the largest retail asset buyout in recent years.
South City Projects is a consortium of real estate developers and business families in Kolkata. Launched in January 2008, South City is the largest shopping mall in eastern India, with over a million sq. ft.
The deal took around nine months to close. Property consultancy Anarock Group was the transaction adviser.
'We are thrilled to strengthen our presence in India and invest in this iconic asset. South City Mall is a definitive destination in Kolkata for shopping, dining, leisure, and entertainment," Asheesh Mohta, head of real estate acquisitions—India, Blackstone, said in a statement.
'We are committed to continuing South City Group's wonderful work and positioning South City Mall for long-term success, benefiting from our scale, operational expertise, and deep experiences in the retail sector, particularly in India, where we own one of the largest retail portfolios,' Mohta added.
Nexus Select Trust, India's first and only publicly listed retail-focused real estate investment trust (Reit), is backed by Blackstone.
Sushil Mohta, chairman of real estate firm Merlin Group and director of South City Projects, says, 'South City Mall is a prime retail asset in south Kolkata. The mall has numerous premium retail and lifestyle brands."
Blackstone has acquired the mall in Kolkata, at a time when Mumbai-based Phoenix Mills Ltd, the largest shopping mall developer, is building a large mall in the city's upscale Alipore neighbourhood.
'South City Mall has a very high footfall, ranging between 55,000-60,000 daily, surging to 75,000–200,000 during weekends and festive seasons,' said Soumendu Chatterjee, regional director—land, Anarock Group.
Blackstone has invested in multiple real estate asset classes in the country, including commercial office, retail, warehousing, and, more recently, residential.
Over 16.6 million sq. ft of new Grade A mall supply is expected to enter the top seven cities in 2025 and 2026, as consumer demand and leasing momentum remain high, as per Anarock research.
With a combined 65% share of this supply, Hyderabad and Delhi-National Capital Region will command the lion's share among the top cities.

HC Plea Seeks Resumption Of Non-Parking Works At Deekshabhoomi

Nagpur: Amid a state-imposed stay on the controversial underground parking project at Deekshabhoomi, a fresh plea was filed in Nagpur bench of Bombay high court urging the govt to resume other halted works unrelated to the parking structure. The application was submitted during the hearing of a pending PIL concerning Deekshabhoomi's overall development. Advocate Shailesh Narnaware argued that while the parking component remains contested, several crucial elements of the master plan were also stalled unnecessarily. "Only the parking facility has been stayed. The govt must proceed with other planned works by holding cabinet meetings, completing procedural approvals, and releasing necessary funds," he urged. The plea also sheds light for the first time on a previously undisclosed land-use proposal. According to documents now on record, the master plan developed by Noida-based Design Associates Incorporated was based on a total of 37.84 acres. This includes the existing 22.80 acres with Deekshabhoomi, along with 11 acres from the health department and 3.84 acres from the Cotton Research Institute. Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) has been identified as the implementing agency. A Deekshabhoomi Smarak Samiti member earlier wrote to the district collector seeking formal transfer of the additional land and administrative approval for the Rs325.86 crore master plan. The court is expected to consider the plea in upcoming hearings.

Infosys's US arm wins large ERP modernisation deal from Nexcom

Bengaluru: Infosys Public Services (IPS), the US subsidiary of Infosys, won a large deal from the US-based Navy Exchange Service Command (Nexcom). Nexcom chose IPS to spearhead a major transformation initiative, implementing Oracle Fusion Cloud to modernise and replace its current ERP financial management and procurement systems, sources told TOI. Infosys is one of the top Oracle implementation partners among system integrators. The US-based Nexcom signed a 14-year agreement with Infosys, which involves a combination of software licensing, professional services, and maintenance and support services. The deal is significant as it could potentially unlock newer opportunities in the Department of Defense. It also strengthens Infosys's position to tap into emerging opportunities in the federal sector, especially considering recent DOGE-related developments. Infosys defines large deals as contracts over $50 million. Nexcom supports warfighter readiness and Navy quality of life by delivering essential products, services, and hospitality to military communities worldwide. Through its retail stores, Ship's Store Program, telecom and uniform offices, textile research facility, and Hospitality Group, Nexcom effectively sustains the Fleet and military families. Nexcom is a non-appropriated fund instrumentality (NAFI) of the Department of Defense and the Department of the Navy, generating sustainment and modernisation funds through operations. An email sent to Infosys and Nexcom didn't elicit a response by the time of going to the press.
