Will Young: 'When I came out in the 00s being threatened was a given'

Will Young is synonymous with 00s Britain, having won the first series of Pop Idol in 2002.
Through the show, Will, now 46, earned pop superstar status with his debut track Anything is Possible, and with his nine albums that followed, he became a household name and LGBTQ+ legend.
While many fans will recall the huge explosion of media interest when he came out as gay shortly after the show, if it were to happen today, Will is happy to say no one would care.
'I mean, it's like chalk and cheese now,' Will tells Metro this Pride Month. 'I don't often really remember the sort of mini traumas that would occur being openly gay and a public figure in the early 2000s. It was so different then.'
Will, then, a charming 22-year-old adjusting his eyes to the spotlight, wouldn't have thought it was possible to be where we are in 2025.
'There was no legal support, you couldn't get married. You just operated within how it was then, which was like, 'Well, I'm going to get shouted out, I'm going to get threatened. No one's gonna care.' That was a given, which seems bonkers now to think like that,' he says.
When Will reflects on this time, he does so with even more respect for those who came before him in the 80s and 90s; the likes of singer Jimmy Somerville, Erasure's Andy Bell, Pet Shop Boys star Neil Tennant, and actor Ian McKellen.

'We have to remember those people and those before them, because they were pretty seminal,' Will says.
Our chat comes just as the international human rights group ILGA-Europe ranked 49 countries on their legal and policy practices for LGBTQ+ people.
The results found the UK, twice top of the ranking in 2011 and 2015, has dropped to 22nd, from 16th place last year.
Has Will noticed this shift?
'Wow, that's so interesting,' he says, thinking: 'I mean, I don't think I have… That rather surprises me. But it wouldn't surprise me if it was focusing on the T part of that.' More Trending
Here, Will refers to the treatment of the trans community in the UK, who are often the subject of intense political scrutiny and are more likely to be subject to harassment and violence than cis people.
'You know, that's just horrific,' Will says of the UK's treatment of trans people, with a twang of exasperation.
'That's horrific across the board, how it's been politicised. It's ridiculous. It's 0.5% of people, and it's but it's always in the top 10 of anything political. It's typical marginalisation.'
Will's advocacy knows no bounds, and he recently revealed how he's considering fostering children or becoming a school counsellor, putting his parental instincts to good use.

If you haven't, we'll assume you live under a rock. AliExpress is an international online retail marketplace where customers can shop a whole host of products from a plethora of brands. Adding to its extensive list of commercial partners is Pop Mart, which only means one thing – AliExpress will be your go-to to secure new editions of the viral Labubu characters. In recent months we have heard (and seen) the hype around the devilish faced furry Labubu. The Monsters collection – created by illustrator Kasing Lung – has taken social media by storm and caused an absolute frenzy. Originally brought to life in illustrated books and later produced as miniature collectibles, the dolls now appear in a variety of formats, including plush toys and keychains. The mystery-packaged figures, which are sold in blind boxes so the colour is a surprise to the shopper, is said to have gone viral because of former Love Island contestant-turned-presenter-come-podcast-host Olivia Attwood's obsession, though David Becham, Dua Lipa and Rihanna have been spotted with what we consider looks like a miniature gremlin on their bags. The hype around Labubu has seen hordes of people flock to Harrods in a bid to get their hands on a Labubu. The demand for Labubu's has also been evident on AliExpress, which has seen a rise in searches for the trending toy in the last two weeks alone. Now, you won't have to queue for hours in a bid to get a Labubu, as you can shop the viral sensation online through the official Pop Mart store on AliExpress, including hotly anticipated new editions of the Labubu characters. Alongside the Pop Mart shop, AliExpress is also launching an unmissable Summer Sale, which will run from June 16 to June 25. More Trending The 10-day sale will enable customers to shop to their heart's content, save more on exclusive deals, and secure free shipping as well as free returns. Just when you thought you'd heard it all, AliExpress is also set to run a live stream directly from Pop Mart's theme park Popland, in Beijing, via the AliExpress app, as well as TikTok, on June 17 to honour the sale and to introduce the range of Pop Mart products to shop – including said new Labubu's. Safe to say AliExpress really is spoiling us. Fans threaten to boycott MLB over 'disgusting' Pride stunt during national anthem at New York Mets game

The New York Mets left baseball fans furious on Friday night after showing a Pride flag on their big screen during a rendition of the US national anthem. Prior to their game against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Mets controversially displayed the LGBTQ + symbol instead of the American flag as the Star Spangled Banner played out at Citi Field. Despite a number of teams getting involved in the annual 'Pride Month' tradition in recent weeks, fans are threatening to boycott MLB over the divisive stunt that took place in New York. One user posted on X along with a video of the Pride flag being shown at Citi Field during the anthem: 'The Mets showed a pride flag instead of the American flag during our National Anthem. Boycott the MLB.' 'That's disgusting, @Mets,' said another. 'Think the @mlb is looking to be boycotted,' wrote a third. A fourth put: 'F***ing Disgrace!!!' The Mets showed a pride flag instead of the American flag during our National Anthem. Boycott the MLB. — Jack (@jackunheard) June 14, 2025 Citi Field was the latest baseball stadium to stage a special Pride Night event this month A fifth posted: 'So disrespectful. This needs to stop.' While another simply put: 'Shameful'. has contacted the New York Mets for comment. MLB teams traditionally hold Pride-themed events in June, with the Boston Red Sox also sparking controversy by staging a pre-game drag show earlier this week. Los Angeles Dodgers players also wore baseball caps with colors of the Pride flag mixed into the team's logo on Saturday, although pitcher Clayton Kershaw made a slight tweak to his hat. Kershaw, who is a devout Christian, inscribed next to the LGBTQ+-inspired logo 'Gen 9:12-16' - which is a passage from the Bible that claims the rainbow was not created by God to represent that demographic. Instead, the passage reads: 'And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth."' That extract from the Bible, which comes just after the story of Noah and his family surviving a worldwide flood on an arc, suggests the rainbow is actually the sign of a covenant God made to never destroy the earth with a flood again. Kershaw's religious statement has gone viral on social media, with a number of users of the same faith commending him for reminding people of the rainbow's meaning. The Boston Red Sox sparked controversy by putting on a pregame drag show earlier this week One wrote: 'Classy move by Kershaw. The rainbow he supports has nothing to do with pride month.' 'Courage to stand up for truth,' said another. While another fan put: 'That's a clever counter!' Others, however, were critical of the baseball player for doctoring a hat designed to raise awareness for equality. 'The rainbow can have multiple meanings,' one argued. 'Why cant the rainbow mean both?' 'What a disappointment,' concluded another.

Dodgers star Clayton Kershaw writes controversial message on Pride-themed hat

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw has sparked controversy after writing a religious message on his Pride-themed hat during their game on Saturday. As they hosted the San Francisco Giants at Dodger Stadium, LA stars wore special baseball caps that had the colors of the Pride flag mixed into the team's logo as part of an LGBTQ + initiative. Yet Kershaw, who is a devout Christian, decided to make a slight tweak to his hat despite not actually featuring in the game. The 37-year-old inscribed next to the LGBTQ+-inspired logo 'Gen 9:12-16' - which is a passage from the Bible that claims the rainbow was not created by God to represent that demographic. One wrote: 'Classy move by Kershaw. While one simply posted: 'he should stick to sports'. Kershaw, whose wife Ellen shares his Christian faith, has previously taken issue with the Dodgers for promoting a prominent LGBTQ+ charity which he accused of mocking Christianity. The MLB franchise controversially hosted the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence at their annual Pride Night back in 2023 despite the group, who frequently dress in drag, typically wearing nun habits. Due to Kershaw's unhappiness with the promotion of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, the Dodgers moved their Christian Faith and Family Day forward to an earlier date. 'I think we were always going to do Christian Faith Day this year, but I think the timing of our announcement was sped up,' he said at the time. 'Picking a date and doing those different things was part of it as well.
