New pedestrian-priority route planned in St Helier

Yahoo10-07-2025
A new pedestrian-priority route is to be created in St Helier.
The government's Infrastructure and Environment (I&E) department said the continuous walkway would be created across the King Street and New Street junction.
Minister for Infrastructure Constable Andy Jehan said the previous traffic arrangements on New Street and New Cut would be changed for an initial 12-month trial period.
The main change would be the removal of access across Kind Street for buses and taxis, along with a minor alteration to permitted access times for commercial unloading, he said.

I&E said a recent traffic survey showed during core retail hours about 50% of vehicles using the route were taxis and 8% were buses.
Jehan said removing access to these vehicles would support pedestrian safety and reduce congestion.
Only pedal cycles and essential commercial deliveries between 20:00 GMT and 10:00 will be permitted to cross King Street via New Cut under the scheme.
New taxi rank locations were being sought in town, he said, but the rank at Library Place would remain.
Jehan said the number of blue badge car parking spaces would not be affected and a map of blue badge spaces across the island would soon be issued.
A more in-depth look at the work on New Street would be published shortly, he added.

Novo Nordisk shares dip further as Wegovy gains nearly erased

By Jacob Gronholt-Pedersen (Reuters) -Shares in Novo Nordisk fell as much as 6% on Friday before recovering some ground later in the session, extending recent losses that threaten to wipe out all the gains since the drugmaker launched its blockbuster weight-loss treatment Wegovy four years ago. The fall on Friday means the Danish firm has dropped out of the top 10 constituents of the Europe-wide STOXX 600 index. Share price declines across the sector were prompted by U.S. President Donald Trump, who sent letters on Thursday to 17 major pharmaceutical firms, including Novo Nordisk, telling them to cut drug prices in the United States. Novo Nordisk on Tuesday slashed its forecast for 2025 sales growth due to competition from compounded, or copycat, versions of Wegovy and appointed veteran insider Maziar Mike Doustdar as its new CEO, prompting its shares to fall 23% on the day. Novo became Europe's most valuable listed firm after launching Wegovy in June 2021, worth some $650 billion in the middle of last year. But its shares have lost more than two-thirds since on concerns the drugmaker is losing ground in the obesity drug race. Its market cap is now $214.5 billion. "The U.S. healthcare system is complex, but Novo Nordisk will continue to work to find solutions that help people access the medicines they need at affordable prices," Novo said in an emailed statement. Novo's shares were around 2% lower at 1453 GMT, bringing this week's losses to around 30% - the stock's worst week ever. The European healthcare index was down around 1% to its lowest since April. "Trump doesn't have the mandate to tell Novo Nordisk how to price their products in the U.S., but investors are just panicking about the risk of another downgrade," said Nordnet analyst Per Hansen. The pressure to lower prices adds to Novo's problems in the United States, its biggest market. It faces competition from Eli Lilly and from compounders - custom-made medicines that are based on the same ingredients as branded drugs. "This is a repricing of the obesity market, it's a repricing of the United States as the world's most attractive drug market, and it's a repricing of the risk from Donald Trump," Hansen said. Gold Futures Jump on Weaker-Than-Expected U.S. Economic Data

1513 GMT – Gold futures rise after U.S. economic data came in softer than expected. Futures are up 1.6% at $3,402.30 a troy ounce. Nonfarm Payroll data showed just 73,000 jobs were added in July, below analyst expectations of 100,000. Even more suprising, revisions to May and June's data revised jobs down by a huge 258,000, ING analysts say in a note. This highlights that the jobs market has lost momentum even earlier than thought and will intensify pressure from President Trump for the Federal Reserve to loosen monetary policy, ING says. With tariffs set to eat into household spending and corporate profits, the case for cutting interest rates has been significantly strengthened, ING says. Lower interest rates typically benefit non-interest bearing bullion. ( 1234 GMT – Base metal prices are mixed, with LME three-month copper flat on $9,603.0 a metric ton and LME three-month aluminum down 0.7% at $2,545.50 a ton. Metals have faced headwinds from various directions in recent days, Commerzbank analysts say in a note. China PMI figures were disappointing, Commerzbank says. Data across the board from the world's most important base metals market recorded significantly stronger declines than expected. At the same time, the Federal Reserve's Wednesday meeting surprised with a more hawkish stance on monetary policy easing than expected, the analysts add. This gave the U.S. dollar a boost, making it more expensive for international purchasers to buy dollar-denominated commodities. The reintroduction of the so-called U.S. reciprocal tariffs have further dimmed the outlook for metals demand, analysts add. (

Ford to reveal more about its new low-cost electric vehicles on August 11

Ford is set to reveal more information about its upcoming low-cost electric vehicles at an event in Kentucky on August 11. And the company is talking a very big game: CEO Jim Farley said Wednesday that the announcement is 'a Model T moment' for Ford. Farley made the comments after Ford revealed its electric vehicle division posted a loss of around $1.3 billion in the second quarter of 2025. Sales of the company's top two EVs, the F-150 Lightning and the Mustang Mach-E, are declining, all while things are looking increasingly tough for electric vehicles under the second Trump administration. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! The Insurance Savings You Expect Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You Great Rates and Award-Winning Service Farley first revealed that Ford had a skunkworks team developing a low-cost electric vehicle in February 2024. As TechCrunch first reported, the effort is being led by former Tesla executive Alan Clarke, and the team is brimming with talent from companies like Tesla, Rivian, Apple, and Lucid Motors. The company has been deliberately vague about any specifics, but has admitted that the first vehicle to be built on this new low-cost platform will be a mid-size pickup truck set for release in 2027. Ford has said it will build 'multiple vehicle styles — for both retail and commercial customers' on the platform, and that these vehicles will feature 'personalized digital experiences.' Cheaper models could help Ford, but 2027 is still a long way out. While there are basically no mass-market electric vehicles available in the U.S. at or under $30,000, that likely won't be the case when Ford's secretive EVs hit the market in two years. Tesla has said it will start selling a stripped-down (and possibly smaller) Model Y SUV later this year. General Motors is bringing back the Chevy Bolt next year. And Jeff Bezos-backed startup Slate Auto is putting its own low-cost electric pickup on sale as early as late 2026.
