ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Israeli military on Wednesday struck the Syrian government's General Staff headquarters in Damascus, following warnings from Tel Aviv that it would escalate operations in defense of Syria's Druze minority amid ongoing violence in Suwayda province.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) 'attacked the Syrian regime's General Staff headquarters in the Damascus area a short while ago,' said Avichay Adraee, the Israeli army's Arabic spokesperson, in a post on X.
Syrian state television reported 'a new aggression by the Israeli occupation air force' targeting Umayyad Square, near the military headquarters building in central Damascus. The incident took place during a live broadcast by Rudaw's correspondent Solin Mohammedamin, showing powerful explosions striking the building.
Earlier in the day, the IDF stated it had struck the entrance of a Syrian military headquarters in the capital.
Adraee also announced that the IDF had dispatched additional reinforcements, including intelligence, reconnaissance, and offensive units, 'to increase the pace of strikes and stop attacks against the Druze in Syria.'
The escalation comes a day after Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajari, spiritual leader of Syria's Druze minority in Suwayda, warned that the community was facing 'extermination.' He said a statement issued previously welcoming Damascus-affiliated forces into Suwayda was made under pressure to prevent further bloodshed.
Damascus-aligned forces entered Suwayda following days of clashes between Druze groups and Bedouin tribes. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that nearly 250 people have been killed in the violence. A ceasefire was later announced by the Syrian defense ministry, reportedly following an agreement with Druze leaders. However, clashes continue in the city.
Israel has in recent months reiterated its commitment to protecting the Druze community in Syria, citing 'strong ties' and security concerns related to any buildup of hostile forces near its borders.
Over the past 24 hours, Israeli airstrikes targeted tanks, missile launchers, combat vehicles, and pickup trucks equipped with heavy machine guns 'that were moving toward Suwayda,' Adraee said.
Meanwhile, Turkey condemned the Israeli strikes. Burhanettin Duran, head of the Turkish Directorate of Communications, said in a statement that "Israel's attacks on Syria target not only Syria's stability and security but also the tranquility of our entire region.' He added, 'Turkey will continue to support Syria's territorial integrity, as it has always done.'
Turkey has been a staunch supporter of the new Syrian government under the leadership of Ahmed al-Sharaa, formed by the now-dissolved Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement released on Wednesday that 'we are acting to save our Druze brothers and to eliminate the gangs of the [Syrian] regime.'
Netanyahu also addressed Israeli Druze citizens attempting to cross the border into Syria near Suwayda, located close to the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
'I have a single request of you: you are Israeli citizens. Do not cross the border. You are risking your lives; you could be murdered, you could be taken hostage, and you are impeding the efforts of the IDF,' he said. 'Return to your homes and let the IDF take action.'
Israel, which views Syria's new Islamist-led government as a threat, has increased efforts to target regime military infrastructure since the fall of Assad. Israeli forces have also moved into buffer zones east of the annexed Golan Heights, citing the need to prevent security threats from emerging along its northern border.
SOHR reported on Wednesday that Israel has carried out 68 attacks on Syrian territory since the beginning of 2025 - 58 of them airstrikes and ten ground-based. These attacks reportedly damaged or destroyed 102 targets, including weapons depots, command centers, and military vehicles.

China navigates Iran-Israel tensions to protect regional influence

Shafaq News – Beijing China has adopted a restrained diplomatic stance amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel, stopping short of offering Tehran direct support while urging both sides to de-escalate. According to a CNN report, Beijing condemned Israeli airstrikes and voiced support for Iran's sovereignty at the United Nations, but avoided direct entanglement, instead calling for dialogue and regional stability. Analysts say China is seeking to preserve its economic partnerships—especially energy imports—without being drawn into conflict. Despite strengthening ties with Tehran, including deeper engagement through the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Beijing has refrained from aligning militarily with Iran.

Iraq launches probe into Wasit mall fire that killed 63

Also in Iraq Iraq holds nationwide mourning after mall blaze kills 61 At least 50 killed, dozens missing in Iraq shopping mall fire Iraqi PM inaugurates Mosul airport on anniversary of city's liberation from ISIS Cardinal Sako urges Iraqi PM to halt 'violations' against Christian sites in Najaf A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Iraqi government on Thursday ordered an investigation into a fire at a shopping mall in Wasit province that killed 63 people and promised compensation for victims. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani on Thursday ordered relevant authorities to 'not show lenience with any negligent party. The measures taken must fit the scale of the incident,' as he announced the start of what he called practical steps in response to the Kornish Hypermarket fire in Kut, the capital city of Wasit. The five-story building, spanning about 350 square meters, went up in flames on Wednesday night. The fire started on the building's second floor, where perfume and cosmetic stores were located, Iraq's civil defense spokesperson Nawas Sabah Shakir told Rudaw. 'Preliminary findings show that the perfumes contributed to the rapid spread of the fire,' he said, noting that most of the victims were on the third, fourth and fifth floors, where they were trapped with no exit route. Most deaths were caused by smoke inhalation. One of the victims was a child and another was a foreign national, Wasit health authorities said. Forty-five people were rescued from the upper floors, according to civil defense teams. Shakir said there were a number of safety violations in the building. The Iraqi Council of Ministers, in an extraordinary meeting, ordered the formation of a committee to investigate the fire and identify those responsible for negligence. The committee has been given five days to complete its report and present recommendations to the cabinet. The government agreed to provide 10 million dinars (around $7,600) in compensation for the family of each victim. The health ministry was also instructed to cover medical treatment for the injured, both inside and outside the country. In a broader legal move, the cabinet approved a draft law to expand compensation for victims of multiple recent disasters. The new draft, which will be submitted to parliament, would cover victims of the Kornish fire in Kut along with other tragedies such as the fire in Nineveh's Hamdaniya district in 2023, when more than 130 people died in a wedding hall. It is intended to replace an earlier version of the law that did not include the Kut victims. Separate investigation committees have also been launched by the civil defense directorate, the Wasit provincial government, and the federal integrity commission. Wasit Governor Mohammed Jamil al-Mayahi accused the hypermarket owner of bypassing regulations and opening the business illegally just two days before the fire. 'The investor opened the project fraudulently, without obtaining any official permits,' he told reporters in a press conference on Thursday. Wasit Provincial Council on Thursday held a special session and voted to temporarily suspend the directors of Kut municipality and the occupational safety department pending the outcome of investigations. The council also decided to classify those killed in the fire as 'martyrs,' a status that typically allows families access to further compensation and social benefits.

US distances itself from Israeli airstrikes in Syria

Shafaq News – Washington The United States did not support Israel's recent airstrikes in Syria, a State Department spokesperson said on Thursday, as Washington urged both sides to reduce tensions and pursue diplomatic channels. Tammy Bruce, speaking at a regular press briefing, confirmed that the Trump administration conveyed its opposition to the Israeli strikes, which came amid growing regional instability. On Wednesday, Israeli warplanes targeted sites in Damascus and positions held by Syrian government forces in the south. Israeli officials claimed the operations aimed to push Syrian troops away from Druze areas near the Israeli border — referring to a small but politically significant minority with populations in Israel, Lebanon, and Syria. 'The United States is engaging diplomatically with Israel and Syria at the highest levels, both to address the present crisis and reach a lasting agreement between the two sovereign states,' Bruce stated. 'We are calling on the Syrian government to lead the path forward,' she added. The remarks come as diplomatic efforts intensify following the Israeli strikes, which have drawn condemnation from regional and international actors. Earlier, a senior US official told Axios that the Trump administration had privately urged Israel to halt its military operations against Syrian government targets and instead open direct communication channels with Damascus.
