‘Incredibly moving' app lets you feel your unborn baby's heartbeat through your phone

New York Post5 days ago
It's making waves!
A new AI-powered app is giving expecting parents the chance to literally feel their unborn baby's heartbeat through gentle vibrations on their phone.
Trellis Health's 'heartbeat feature' might sound spookily futuristic, but it delivers the opportunity for parents-to-be to experience their baby's pulse in their palm anytime they like.
Trellis Health's new 'heartbeat feature' offers parents-to-be the opportunity to feel their baby's pulse in their palm anytime they like.
Trellis Health
'This feature offers a deeply emotional and tangible way for members, and their families, to connect with their baby during pregnancy, something that has traditionally been limited to fleeting moments in a clinic or sonogram room,' Estelle Giraud, CEO and co-founder of Trellis, told The Post.
'Feeling your baby's actual heartbeat, synced in real time through gentle vibrations, creates an intimate bond that helps make the pregnancy experience more real and present, especially in the early months when physical signs are subtle.'
Giraud said the feature offers 'peace of mind' to parents feeling anxious between doctor's appointments.
The doctor sends the ultrasound to Trellis for use in the app.
'The reactions have been incredibly moving, with many partners describing it as a critical moment of connection to their baby,' Estelle Giraud, CEO and co-founder of Trellis, told The Post.

'It's a haptic loop to the beat of the recorded fetal heart rate directly from the ultrasound,' Giraud explained.
'The member taps the heart icon in the individual ultrasound, and the loop will continue until deactivating with another tap.'
Any ultrasound that includes a fetal heartbeat can be used — though Giraud noted that 'earlier in-pregnancy stage ultrasounds do not always report a fetal heartbeat, but this doesn't mean that there isn't one.'
The app, which launched on May 20, costs $96 a year.
The Seattle-based health tech startup aims to address 'glaring gaps in women's health,' such as high maternal mortality rates, 'nearly nonexistent' postpartum care and an 'overwhelming and fragmented' healthcare experience.
The app includes a straightforward, comprehensive view of your health history, help with questions to ask the doctor and easy access to midwife support.
Recent adopters of the heartbeat feature seem to be impressed.
Giraud said that 'the reactions have been incredibly moving,' with many parents describing it 'as a critical moment of connection to their baby.'
'Family members have also been deeply impacted, being able to hold and feel the baby's heartbeat has helped them feel more involved in the journey,' she added.
'We've heard everything from, 'I cried the first time I felt it' to 'It brought my partner and me closer to the pregnancy in a way we didn't expect.''

Black Tech Week draws Keke Palmer as attendance and sponsors surge

Keke Palmer, fresh off the ESSENCE Festival stage in New Orleans, headlines this year's Black Tech Week, a rapidly growing Midwest-based tech summit that blends entrepreneurship, cultural influence and genuine funding opportunities for underrepresented founders. Why it matters: The three-day event, which kicks off Monday, has become a hub for dealmaking, upskilling and ecosystem building for Black and brown innovators in the Midwest and beyond. Only 0.4% of U.S. venture funding went to Black‑founded startups in 2024— the lowest share in years. Black Tech Week is built to close that gap. The Big Picture: Organizers expected fundraising and turnout to take a hit, but the opposite happened. Black Tech Week is growing — even as many major companies, such as Target, Google, Amazon, Meta, and T-Mobile, cut sponsorship funds or eliminate DEI roles due to political and shareholder pressure. Organizers tapped into Ohio institutions, garnering strong local support from the state's Fortune 500 companies. This year, Black Tech Week expanded its sponsors and added workshops focused on entrepreneurship, AI and access to capital. What they're saying: Candice Matthews Brackeen, CEO and founder of Lightship Foundation, which acquired the event, says the event's growth is personal and political. "While other companies pulled back after November, we've gotten bigger," Brackeen told Axios. "The city, the county, the state — they've all shown up to support this." Zoom in: As an Ohio native, she's proud to host a conference that helps put the Midwest at the center of innovation and culture. Brackeen points out that Cincinnati is quickly becoming a core hub, thanks to Intel, Amazon, and massive public-private investment. Ohio is often overlooked, she says, "but Ohio builds businesses, too." Zoom out: When Brackeen first attended the Black Tech Week conference a decade ago, there were only a few hundred people in attendance. This year, more than 6,200 attendees are projected to attend. Speakers for the conference include Fawn Weaver of Uncle Nearest, Calvin Butts Jr. of private equity firm East Chop Capital and a growing slate of Black founders with major exits. Workshops cover AI, venture capital and the soft skills often missing from traditional tech training. "We go from panels in the morning to workshops in the afternoon," Brackeen said. "This isn't just about inspiration — this is where the real work gets done." The vibe is less buttoned-up expo, more real-talk block party for builders, dreamers and dealmakers, said entrepreneur Rodney Walton, who has gone from attendee to speaker. "You don't have to be uptight. You can be who you are," Walton said. "It's authentic, and when people show up that way, business actually gets done." Walton says the conference helped him connect with investors — and even the pastor who officiated his wedding. The bottom line: Brackeen said they are looking for business leaders who are moving the culture every year.

DOGE told regulator to ‘rubber stamp' nuclear

The resurgence of nuclear power is rooted not just in bipartisan interest, but in the emergence of companies building small modular reactors, or SMRs. The advanced reactors by developers including TerraPower, X-energy, General Electric Hitachi Nuclear Energy, NuScale Power and Kairos Power are factory-built and meant to bring down the daunting development costs of large, conventional nuclear power plants. Big tech companies such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Meta are also signing long-term agreements with utilities that own nuclear reactors and SMR startups for future purchases of electricity to power their AI data centers. The NRC is assessing a plan to reopen a closed unit at the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania. And last month, the agency received a combined license application from Fermi America, a Texas-based company led by former Energy Secretary Rick Perry that plans to build the nation's largest nuclear power complex. The 'HyperGrid' site is in Amarillo, Texas, near the largest U.S. assembly plant for nuclear weapons known as Pantex. 'The Chinese are building 22 nuclear reactors today to power the future of AI,' said Perry, the former Texas governor. 'America has none. We're behind, and it's all hands on deck.' One of the three people with knowledge of the May meeting and Blake's 'rubber stamp' remark said the influx of nuclear license applications — and from politically connected people — is adding pressure and scrutiny to the process. 'This is where the rubber hits the road,' the person said. All of this comes amid a shake-up of senior leadership at the NRC. That includes the commission's Executive Director of Operations Mirela Gavrilas, who had worked at the agency for more than 20 years and who was effectively forced out, according to the three people. As the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee sent Wright's renomination to the full Senate on Wednesday, its top Democrat, Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, withdrew his support. '[Wright] came before our committee, however, not just as a nominee but as the present leader of the commission,' Whitehouse said. 'I hoped to see Chairman Wright rise to the occasion, but circumstances right now at the NRC continue to deteriorate.' 'In response to my questions for the record, the chairman acknowledged there is a DOGE staffer at the agency. This individual sits in an office that reports directly to the chairman. However, the staffer is — and I quote the [question for the record] from Mr. Wright — the staffer is 'on detail from the Department of Energy, and as such does not have an NRC supervisor,'' he continued. In written replies to the committee, Wright committed to 'ensure that the NRC's regulatory independence is preserved.'
