Shortly after take-off, a middle-aged Chinese woman with a bob and a red T-shirt – rather than a flight attendant – appeared at the front of the cabin. When she started making an in-flight announcement in thick, heavily accented Cantonese, there was a buzz as passengers excitedly pulled out their smartphones to start recording her spiel.
This was not a regular safety briefing. In fact, this short-haired Chinese woman is a famous jehjeh ('older sister', or auntie, in Cantonese) from Tam Jai Sam Gor Mixian, there to introduce new, mala-flavoured instant noodles now available on
HK Express flights in the first collaboration between the airline and the Hong Kong restaurant chain.
Founded in 1996 in the city's Sham Shui Po neighbourhood, Tam Jai started as a small shop selling Yunnan mixian (rice noodles) with three choices of soup base: clear broth, sour-spicy, and numbing-spicy.

Today the chain has more than 220 outlets in Hong Kong, mainland China, Singapore, Japan and Australia.

At a joint press conference in Beijing with representatives from all three hosting regions, Chan said the Games will further create new opportunities for sports exchanges, people-to-people connections and economic collaboration in the Greater Bay Area. "To facilitate mainland visitors coming to Hong Kong to watch the events, the organising committee is actively seeking measures for mainland residents to easily obtain travel permits to Hong Kong, allowing tourists to travel alongside the competitions and further promoting the integration of sports and tourism in the Greater Bay Area," he said. Chan said the three regions have established a multi-tiered coordination system, including regular meetings and cross-border working groups, to streamline logistics like spectator mobility. Echoing the focus on accessibility, Macau's Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, O Lam, revealed plans to extend travel permits for visitors attending events in Macau, aiming to enhance "connectivity of hearts" through "soft connectivity". Meanwhile, Wang Xi, standing committee member of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, said the online ticketing platform will be launched in early August. "In late August, we will release ticket resources in phases and by events according to the progress of the competition organisation. The prices of popular events are generally affordable, and some events adopt a reservation system," he said. Wang also noted that plans for the opening ceremony in Guangzhou and closing ceremony in Shenzhen are nearly finalised. Both events will spotlight Greater Bay Area culture, including Cantonese opera and music, and feature a unified entrance for athlete delegations from all three hosts. A 100-day countdown begins August 1 with Guangdong and Macau holding special events that day. The following day, Hong Kong will host a large-scale celebration, followed by a city-wide sports day. Tong Lixin, deputy director of the General Administration of Sport, said all competition venues are nearing readiness, the Games schedule is finalised and more than half of 68 test events have been completed. He said mass participation events are also underway, reinforcing the Games' community focus.

The late US celebrity chef and travel personality Anthony Bourdain was a big fan of Vietnam and its cuisine. He even invited former US President Barack Obama to appear on the Hanoi episode of his food and travel show Parts Unknown in 2016. Like the chef, Hong Kong – known for its love of international cuisines – is not immune to the charms of Vietnam and there are plenty of Vietnamese restaurants to be found in the city. The ties between the two, however, go much deeper than food. More than 200,000 Vietnamese refugees entered Hong Kong between the end of the Vietnam war in 1975 and the 1997 handover of the city from British to Chinese sovereignty. In 1991, Hong Kong had around 64,300 Vietnamese asylum seekers, the highest number ever according to government statistics. The 1998 Hong Kong Yearbook – a government publication covering the year's developments in the city – states that more than 143,000 Vietnamese refugees were resettled to other countries between 1975 and 1998, while more than 70,000 migrants were repatriated home. Photo: RTHK Shanxi province has established a 'red cultural ecosystem' and patriotic education base at the site of the former Eighth Route Army headquarters in the war of resistance against Japan. Educational tours have been hosted at the site in Wuxiang county in Shanxi, as this year marks the 80th anniversary of victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and World Anti-Fascist War. A former soldier from Wuxiang county who participated in the war of resistance, Li Jinshui, joined the Eighth Route Army at the age of 17 and participated in multiple battles. 'With my country being in trouble, I, as a person with conscience, had to step forward and save my country with guns,' he said. Li, 98, said he was seriously injured in a battle in 1944, with a bullet hitting him in the left leg, but that he continued to fight. 'I was discharged despite my wound not having fully recovered because we only had a small hospital and many injured soldiers,' he said. "The army needed people so I returned when my condition was stable." The former Eighth Route Army headquarters, from where oversight was cast over 135 battles during the war, has now been transformed into a memorial hall. The 'red tourism' site is expected to see more than 200,000 visitors per year. Researcher Guo Xiuxiang from a research institute of Communist Party history in Shanxi said the site is of high historical value. 'The site witnessed how Chinese soldiers and people fought against a siege and attack by the Japanese army,' she said. "It also witnessed how the Eighth Route Army engaged in guerrilla warfare against Japanese forces, and as such it has a very high historical value."
