Visitors warned against superstitious acts at UPSI student's grave in Terengganu, told to respect family and Islam
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, said that while he, too, was moved by the various stories surrounding the 23-year-old student, including reports that she passed away while clutching the Quran, the public must remain mindful of the family's feelings and refrain from straying into superstitious practices.
'Of course, Nurly Sahirah's parents are very hopeful about this. They do not want the kindness shown by their late daughter to cause our society to engage in superstitious things.
'I urged the public to behave respectfully, act in accordance with religious teachings and pray for the deceased. Superstition is not the way to honour the memory of the departed,' he told reporters after visiting Nurly Sahirah's family at Kampung Gong Pasir in Kerandang near here yesterday.
Mohd Na'im also advised the public to seek guidance from those with religious authority, such as state muftis, before undertaking any actions related to such matters.
Following reports of superstitious and shirk-related activities at the grave of the late Nurly in Kampung Gong Pasir Muslim Cemetery, Kerandang, the family installed a rope barrier to prevent further misuse. The action was taken after some individuals were observed taking soil from the grave and applying it to their faces, which is considered an act of superstition and disrespect.
The family also decided not to receive guests from last Wednesday (July 2) to give them space, especially for Nurly's parents, Azman Mohamad, 63, and Kamariah Abdul Latif, 60, to rest.
Meanwhile, Kamariah, when met by reporters today, urged members of the public who wish to visit their home to view the handwritten Quran manuscript by her late daughter, once the visiting session reopens tomorrow, to observe the designated visiting hours, which are from 9 am to 6 pm.
'We are truly grateful and welcome the presence of visitors. To us, they are not coming by our invitation, but by the will and invitation of Allah,' she said. — Bernama

PETALING JAYA : The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) has decided to charge Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh over statements he made on his Facebook page, 'Akmal Saleh', which were said to disrupt public order. In a statement, the AGC said it would proceed to charge Akmal under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for making statements conducing to public mischief. However, it did not specify the Facebook content in question. In a Facebook video, Akmal said police had informed him that he would be charged at the magistrates' court in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, on Friday, at 8am. He said he would cut short his trip to Mecca, after arriving there just yesterday, to face the charge against him. Last Friday, it was reported that police had launched a probe into a viral Facebook video featuring Akmal making statements that were considered to be 'hate speech' that could disturb public peace. It was not clear which video is the subject of the investigation. However, in recent days, Akmal has posted videos concerning a Jalur Gemilang mishap at a Penang hardware store, where the national flag was hoisted upside down. In one of Akmal's videos, he said prosecutors had two days to charge the shop owner, failing which he said he would personally 'teach this 'Ah Pek' (uncle) how to correctly put up a flag'. The AGC also confirmed that Bersatu Youth chief Hilman Idham would be charged under the same section over remarks he made in a video posted on the TikTok account ' Earlier, Bersatu Youth information chief Harris Idaham Rashid said the wing's chief is expected to be charged at the magistrates' court in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow over a speech he delivered during a gathering outside the Dang Wangi police headquarters last month. The AGC today said it had also decided to charge a woman named Siti Hajar Aflah Sharuddin under the same section as Akmal and Hilman, and S Chandrasegaran under the Communications and Multimedia Act for posting offensive content online. 'All charges will be brought before the magistrates' court with the appropriate local jurisdiction in due course.'

Saifuddin: Over 100,000 foreign construction workers untraceable after legalisation scheme
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — A total of 100,646 foreign workers holding Temporary Work Visit Passes (PLKS) in the construction sector failed to be detected after the foreign worker whitewashing programme implemented by the Construction Labour Exchange Centre Bhd (CLAB), according to the Home Minister. According to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, the government will implement measures and punitive actions against employers and foreign workers in the construction sector who commit offences under existing regulations. 'They come in, they hold the construction sector PLKS, but when whitewashing is carried out by CLAB, we cannot find any impact. If they misuse the passes, we will take action according to the offence. 'If their passes have expired, they should have signed a check-out memo and left the country. If they do not leave the country, we will track them down,' he said. He said this at the press conference of the Joint Committee Meeting between the Minister of Home Affairs and the Minister of Human Resources, Steven Sim, on the Management of Foreign Workers today. According to Saifuddin, the matter was revealed following a presentation by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) during the meeting. 'We will see what Act they violated and punitive action will be taken,' he said. Previously, he was reported to have said that applications for foreign worker employment quotas are now only allowed on a case-by-case basis involving three main sectors and 10 selected sub-sectors. Govt files appeal against negligence ruling in Ivana Smit's case

(Instagram pic) PETALING JAYA : The government has filed a notice of appeal against the Kuala Lumpur High Court's finding that the government and police were negligent in failing to conduct a proper investigation into Dutch model Ivana Smit's death. Her family's lawyer, Sankara Nair, said the notice was filed yesterday by the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) on behalf of the defendants – the inspector-general of police, investigating officer (IO) Faizal Abdullah, the home minister, and the government. 'Our firm continues to act for (Smit's mother) Christina Caroline Gerarda Johanna Verstappen in defending the High Court's decision, and we remain committed to ensuring that justice is pursued transparently and vigorously,' Nair said in a statement. On July 29, the High Court ordered the government to pay Smit's family RM500,000 as general damages and a total of RM600,000 as aggravated and exemplary damages, together with costs of RM100,000. Justice Roz Mawar Rozain said Faizal had 'arbitrarily classified Smit's death as suicide' despite the presence of circumstantial evidence suggesting the possibility of homicide. She also said that no immediate action was taken to arrest suspect Alex Johnson and his wife, Luna Almaz, after a forensic report stated that the man's DNA was found under Smit's nails. According to Roz Mawar, Faizal had attributed the presence of Johnson's DNA to sexual activity with the deceased. The court also noted that another High Court had directed the AGC to instruct the police to investigate the cause of Smit's death in 2019. And despite a judicial directive, the defendants failed to meaningfully comply with this order, Roz Mawar said. She also noted that a task force, which included the investigating officer, had been set up to probe the deceased's death. 'However, the investigation has remained stagnant since 2019.' Verstappen filed the lawsuit on the family's behalf in 2020. Smit, who was 18, was found dead on the sixth floor of CapSquare Residence on Dec 7, 2017, after falling from a unit on the 20th floor. An inquest held in 2018 determined that her death was a 'misadventure'. Upon revision, the court ruled that Smit's death was caused by 'persons known or unknown'.
