Ken Hinkley supports Willie Rioli, backs Port Adelaide's stance on 'persistent' racism in AFL

Ken Hinkley has backed Port Adelaide's stance on "persistent, ongoing" racism in the AFL as he throws his arms around troubled forward Willie Rioli.
Rioli won't play in the Showdown against Adelaide on Saturday night, having announced his decision to sit out before the league suspended him for one match.
It followed Rioli's "unacceptable" threatening message to Western Bulldogs player Bailey Dale and an AFL probe into two verbal threats the 29-year-old Power star allegedly made to a Geelong and an Essendon player.
The ban prompted Port to denounce racism in the game, calling on the AFL industry to do more to understand what Indigenous and multicultural players and staff go through on a daily basis.
Power coach Hinkley refused to shed any further light on the subject when he fronted the media on Friday.
"I'm not going to go into specifics, but I will say that I'm fully supportive of the club's position," Hinkley told reporters.
"Unfortunately I've been in this job for a long period of time and continually do see and hear different things that get done and said.
"I'm not going to say exactly what that is.
"All I want to do is say I fully support our club's position. I couldn't support it any stronger."
Hinkley said the Power, which accepted Rioli's suspension, was eager to move on from the drama surrounding the forward's behaviour.
As well as serving a one-match suspension, Rioli is required to participate in "education on respectful/non-violent language and conduct".
"From my point of view, the most important thing is that Willie's OK and he's under control," Hinkley said.
"As has been said all week, we will support Willie and put our arms around Willie and look after him.
"He made a mistake. He knows that and he owns that, and the consequences are known to everyone.
Rioli could return for Port's match against Geelong on May 17, as he would have served the AFL's one-match ban.
But the Power are yet to put a timeline on the 98-game goal-sneak's comeback.
"They're not things that are worth chatting about today, other than at the moment we know Willie's doing OK," Hinkley said.
"That's all we care for at the moment."
Hinkley was asked whether he thought opposition players might try to get under Rioli's skin when he returns.
"I would doubt anyone would go there, with the stance that the AFL have now put in place around comments said on the field," he said.
"I just don't think you'd go there, but Willie will get our support as he always has.
"Willie also has to learn and he knows that. I think he's publicly said that himself that he's got to get better."
Rioli, who met with AFL officials on Wednesday, apologised privately to Dale on Monday and again publicly on Thursday.
Port wrote to the AFL last month after the heated fallout from Rioli's online post about Hawthorn, concerned about how racist incidents had been portrayed — specifically that players such as Rioli had provoked the abuse.
"By framing racist abuse as reactive rather than endemic, we are contributing to a narrative that undermines the AFL's stated commitment to eliminating racism from our game," the club said in a statement on Thursday.
Hinkley's own focus had largely been on preparing Port for the Showdown, as they aim to bounce back from a horror 90-point annihilation from the Bulldogs.

Post-race jockey reports from the 2025 Queensland Oaks

You Wangh pulled out plenty at the business end to claim the $700,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday. The daughter of So You Think placed three runs back in the Group 1 Australian Oaks before adding Queensland's fillies' feature. You Wangh, ridden by Tommy Berry, defeated Godolphin filly Pinito and Australasian Oaks winner Benagil. The favourite Philia finished eighth. Calling for the win! ðŸ'² You Wahng takes the G1 Queensland Oaks for @Leesracing and @TommyBerry21! @BrisRacingClub @RaceQLD — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 7, 2025 The victory was trainer Kris Lees' third Queensland Oaks win, his second win in the race in the past three years. The other winners were Vitesse Dane (2005) and Amokura (2023). The win was You Wangh's third from nine starts and took her earnings to more than $590,000. This is what the riders thought of their mount's performance in the Queensland Oaks. â– â– â– â– â– 1st - YOU WAHNG (Tommy Berry) She was a little bit underdone last start with the let-up between the Sydney Carnival and here. I learned my lesson last start. I got there too early on her. I really timed my run today and lucky she's only half a horse wide because she could take them sticky little tight runs but it's just unbelievable, it's awesome to do it. 2nd - PINITO (Jason Collett) Very brave. She was definitely in for the fight and just missed out. 3rd - BENAGIL (Mark Zahra) She was very stiff, she probably should have won. She just lacks gate speed which meant we ended up on the inside, so we had a few traffic issues before we got clear air. 4th - MOVIN OUT (James McDonald) She was really good, she probably just found the 2200 metres a little bit too far for her. 5th - SHE'S A DEALER (George Rooke) No comment provided. 6th - CHURCHILL'S CHOICE (Koby Jennings) She always hits that flat spot about half a mile out, and today it was a lot more obvious because it was her last run of the prep. But she's going to grow up and get stronger. 7th - AMPLIFY (Ryan Maloney) She began very ordinarily so I wasn't able to use the barrier to my advantage. In a muddling run race, she just got shuffled back too far and when the others started making their runs I had to duck back to the inside, which probably wasn't the place to be today. So I thought she ran quite well considering. 8th - PHILIA (Kerrin McEvoy) I thought she ran well. She began okay but didn't muster as well as I would have liked, so we didn't take up as good a potion as I would've liked. That meant we had to do a bit of work and she was beaten on the corner, but she still stuck on to be beaten not far. So David has done a remarkable job with her. 9th - JENNI'S MEADOW (Ethan Brown) I thought it was a really gallant effort. She probably just over-travelled a fraction throughout, which took away from her finish. So in the circumstances, I thought she stuck on well. 10th - ELLA HAZEL (Joshua Parr) I failed to execute the necessary procedures to win the race. 11th - SUN WORSHIPPER (Angela Jones) It's just a shame that she had a bad gate and we had to settle at the back of the field, we had no chance from the position we were in. 12th - REAL CLASS (Andrew Mallyon) We moved into the race really nicely before we got deleted and didn't get our chance. 13th - SWELTERING (Rachel King) She jumped well to offset the bad gate and travelled well for the first half of the race, before hitting a flat spot. But she still finished off well. 15th - ECLAIR ENCORE (Damien Thornton) She was very disappointing today. 16th - PLEASURE ARTIST (Cejay Graham) I think she's probably just looking for a break now. 17th - SHANGRI LA IMPACT (Tim Clark) It's only her first preparation and it probably all caught up with her today. She's probably come to the end of her prep.

Post-race jockey reports from the 2025 Kingsford Smith Cup

Champion jockey James McDonald timed his run to perfection aboard Joliestar in the $1 million Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday. The Chris Waller-trained mare came from well back in the field to claim the weight-for-age feature in the final stride. Joliestar defeated Zarastro by a nose with a similar margin back to Golden Mile in third. An EPIC finish in the G1 Kingsford Smith Cup sees Joliestar nab them right on the line to take her third Group 1! 🤩 @cwallerracing @mcacajamez @BrisRacingClub @RaceQLD — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 7, 2025 The win was Joliestar's sixth from 15 starts, her third at Group 1 level, and took her earnings to more than $4.5 million. Waller indicated he would discuss Joliestar's immediate with her owners but while holding a nomination for next week's Stradbroke Handicap, the likelihood is the four-year-old will head to the paddock to begin her preparation for the $20 million The Everest in October. This is what the riders thought of their mount's performance in the Kingsford Smith Cup. â– â– â– â– â– 1st - JOLIESTAR (James McDonald) She wasn't entitled to win, but that's how good she is. When I looked up at the 600m I thought I was OK, then I got on my bike but as soon as I did that, the pace quickened and the margin went from five lengths turning for home to seven lengths. It just didn't feel like I was making ground. I was lucky I was on a proper horse, even though she didn't like the ground at Eagle Farm today. 2nd - ZARASTRO (Angela Jones) So gutsy. He was all the way there, he was there to the last stride. Very proud. 3rd - GOLDEN MILE (Jason Collett) Good performance. Positioned himself well from the gate and still there at the finish. Happy. 4th - KIMOCHI (Craig Williams) She was really good and solid. Gave me a lovely ride throughout, the leaders got a break and we had to chase them down and she stuck to the task really well. 5th - RISE AT DAWN (Ethan Brown) He found them a bit sharp off the bridle but he ran really well. He blew out a bit late but up in trip is going to suit him and I think he's come up really well this prep. 6th - GIGA KICK (Mark Zahra) Joliestar had a bit more tactical speed than us early so I came back and followed her. We gave them a big start but I probably would have liked him to finish off a bit better, like the winner. 7th - BENEDETTA (Tim Clark) She had a good run, it worked out beautifully. Just felt she lost a bit of confidence around the bend on that shifty ground and she has done a bit of racing this preparation so she may have just come to the end of it. 8th - LIBERTAD (Jamie Mott) A little bit below his best today. He had a perfect run but just found he wasn't at his best. 9th - PAYLINE (Tommy Berry) He gave himself a real good whack out of the gates and never felt great after that.
