Harnessing Women's Talent Across ASEAN: Potential US$2.3 Trillion Economic Boost, Minister

BusinessToday24-05-2025

Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz delivered a powerful keynote address at the ASEAN Women Economic Summit (AWES) 2025, emphasising the critical role of women's empowerment in driving economic growth and resilience across the region. The summit, a flagship initiative under Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship, convened prominent figures from government, business, and civil society at the Shangri-La Hotel in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, May 24, 2025.
Minister Zafrul underscored the significant demographic of women in ASEAN, representing nearly 50% of the population. However, he highlighted sobering statistics, including lower labor force participation rates, underrepresentation in senior management, and greater barriers to credit for women entrepreneurs. He warned that global challenges like trade tensions and climate change could exacerbate these inequalities.
'These gaps aren't just unfair – they're economically irrational,' stated Minister Zafrul. He stressed that empowering women is not merely a matter of social justice but an economic imperative. Citing research, he noted that advancing women's equality could add a staggering $12 trillion to global GDP by 2025, with Malaysia alone potentially boosting its GDP by 8.2%, equivalent to $50 billion, by closing gender gaps.
The Minister outlined Malaysia's commitment to women's empowerment through its MADANI Economy framework, which prioritises inclusivity. He detailed concrete measures implemented by his ministry (MITI), including the Women Exporters Development Programme, gender-responsive trade provisions, a RM200-million fund for women entrepreneurs in high-growth sectors, and the Women in Industry and Trade Initiative (WITI). Notably, he highlighted that women constitute 69% of MITI's top management.
Looking regionally, Minister Zafrul emphasised Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship theme of 'Inclusivity and Sustainability,' aiming to ensure that opportunities are accessible to all, including women. He pointed to the immense potential of harnessing women's talents across ASEAN economies, estimating a potential $2.3 trillion boost. He also highlighted the resilience and innovation that diverse, women-led businesses bring to the challenging global landscape.
Malaysia is actively pursuing ambitious national targets, including increasing women's workforce participation to 63% by 2030, ensuring 30% female representation on corporate boards, doubling the number of women-led businesses in export markets, and establishing ASEAN's first Women's Economic Empowerment Centre in Kuala Lumpur.
The Minister also posed critical questions for AWES 2025 to address, seeking actionable feedback on policy harmonization, access to finance (including a potential $1 billion ASEAN fund), digital upskilling for women, dedicated support for women industrialists and exporters, and strategies to build a robust female leadership pipeline.
In his concluding remarks, Zafrul expressed his hope for an ASEAN where every girl sees limitless possibilities, every woman entrepreneur has equal access, every company benefits from diverse leadership, and every economy grows stronger through inclusive participation. He urged leaders to inspire change, share experiences, mentor generously, and lead fearlessly, echoing Malala Yousafzai's powerful words: 'We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back.'
Minister Zafrul officially declared the ASEAN Women Economic Summit 2025 open, expressing his conviction that it will be a key turning point for women's empowerment in the region. Related

Penang housewife loses over RM500,000 in face-to-face investment scam spanning two years

GEORGE TOWN, June 12 — A housewife lost RM521,450 after falling victim to a fraudulent investment scheme carried out face-to-face in Seberang Perai Utara (SPU), near here, recently. Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the Commercial Crime Investigation Division from the SPU Police Headquarters received a report from the 57-year-old woman yesterday, with investigations underway. 'Based on investigations, the victim was introduced by her neighbour to the scheme, which promised high returns in a short period in 2022, before introducing the victim to another woman who posed as a marketing officer,' he said in a statement yesterday, adding that the woman explained to the victim how the investment worked. He said the victim then joined the investment and made 51 cash transactions into five different bank accounts from March 4, 2022, to January 22, 2024, totaling RM521,450, before realizing she had been scammed after the suspect kept giving excuses whenever she wanted to withdraw her profits. Hamzah said some of the excuses given were that the investments had not reached maturity dates and that there was no need to worry because her capital was safely stored in Bank Negara. He said the victim was also instructed to make various additional payments, including those to Bank Negara and legal fees, to facilitate the recovery of her capital and profits. 'Investigations are ongoing, including tracing those involved in the scam, and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating,' he added. — Bernama

Russia – Malaysia relations gaining new momentum, says Ambassador

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia remains a longstanding, reliable, and valued partner of Russia, with bilateral ties gaining renewed momentum, said Russian Ambassador to Malaysia Naiyl M. Latypov. Speaking at a reception marking Russia's National Day in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, Latypov said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and President Vladimir Putin had held extensive and constructive discussions during Anwar's recent visit to Russia. "This intensification of dialogue at the highest level clearly reflects the upward trajectory of our bilateral relations. Our cooperation spans a wide range of areas, including trade, investment, energy, tourism, education, and cultural and humanitarian exchange. "I hope that the motion along this trend will accelerate further, bringing more benefits to our nations," he said. Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani represented the government at the event. Also present was Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. According to Latypov, Russia-Malaysia cooperation is grounded in mutual respect and shared benefit, with both countries consistently striving to understand one another's perspectives and to act as true partners. "Our leaders' exchanges on regional and international matters have shown that the positions of Russia and Malaysia are closely aligned. "Both of our countries are firm in upholding the principles of international law, sovereignty, and non-interference in internal affairs. We also coordinate effectively at multilateral platforms, including the United Nations," he stated. As Malaysia holds the Asean Chairmanship this year, Latypov said Russia places great importance on its dialogue with the Association. Asean's centrality is founded on inclusiveness, transparency, and equality, with full respect for the identity and interests of all its members, he added. On BRICS, Latypov said Russia is committed to supporting Malaysia's smooth and effective participation in all BRICS partner formats. On Russia's national day, he noted this year holds special significance for Russians as the country solemnly marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Great Patriotic War and the Second World War. Russia and Malaysia's diplomatic relations were established in 1967, marking nearly six decades this year. During Anwar's four-day official visit to Russia last month, Putin stated bilateral ties are developing successfully and progressively, with both sides expressing strong interest in making the cooperation more substantive and transparent.
