Tottenham Hotspur appoint Brentford's Thomas Frank as manager

At Brentford, manager Thomas Frank created a high-scoring side who have punched above their weight since reaching the Premier League in 2021 via the playoffs. PHOTO: REUTERS LONDON - Tottenham Hotspur named Thomas Frank as their fifth full-time manager in six years on June 12 with the Premier League club confirming they had hired the former Brentford boss on a three-year contract to replace the sacked Ange Postecoglou. The 51-year-old Dane, who has been in charge of Brentford since 2018 and established them in the top flight, will take charge of a club that will take part in 2026's Champions League after they won the Europa League in May in Bilbao. 'In Thomas, we are appointing one of the most progressive and innovative head coaches within the game,' a club statement said. 'He has a proven track record in player and squad development and we look forward to him leading the team as we prepare for the season ahead.' Australian Postecoglou's achievement in delivering Spurs' first trophy for 17 years was overshadowed by a woeful Premier League season which saw them finish 17th with 22 defeats, their worst campaign since the club were relegated in 1977. Frank began his coaching career with Denmark's under-age sides before taking charge at Brondby in 2013, leaving in March 2016 and in December that year joined Brentford as assistant to Dean Smith in the Championship (second tier). In October 2018, after the dismissal of Smith, Frank was appointed Bees manager. 'From the moment he replaced Dean Smith, he understood what we were trying to build and his wisdom, coaching ability and emotional intelligence have helped transform the club,' Brentford director of football Phil Giles said. 'We will never forget Thomas, but now it is time to thank him and take the next steps in our journey with a new leader who we believe can be just as successful and influential.' Frank has been impressive during his time at Brentford - creating a high-scoring side who have punched above their weight since reaching the Premier League in 2021 via the playoffs. In their four Premier League seasons under Frank, Brentford have finished 13th, 9th, 16th and 10th and last term only four teams scored more than their 66 goals. A keen user of player data, Frank and his backroom staff have proved especially adept at unearthing gems and selling those players on for huge profits, such as forwards Ollie Watkins, Ivan Toney and Said Benrahma, plus goalkeeper David Raya Despite the outgoings, Brentford have managed to remain competitive in the top flight under Frank and last season were in the mix for European qualification. Forwards Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa scored 39 Premier League goals between them last season and both could well be Tottenham targets during the close season. Frank has gained a reputation for his attention to detail and it is no surprise that his Brentford side scored inside 40 seconds in three successive league games last season. 'We have a kick-off strategy and we tweak it from game-to-game. And as a mindset and philosophy, we like to get straight on the front foot and be positive,' Frank said at the time. He now faces a completely different challenge at Tottenham and a fast start to his reign will be important to win over fans who felt Postecoglou should have been rewarded for winning a trophy by being given another season at the helm. Brentford assistant first-team coach Justin Cochrane, head of athletic performance Chris Haslam and first-team analyst Joe Newton are also joining Frank at Spurs, along with Andreas Georgson from Manchester United. Medvedev overcomes Mannarino in Den Bosch, Mertens and Andreescu advance

FILE PHOTO: Tennis - French Open - Roland Garros, Paris, France - May 27, 2025, Russia's Daniil Medvedev in action during his first-round match against Britain's Cameron Norrie REUTERS/Gonzalo Fuentes/File Photo Top seed Daniil Medvedev beat former champion Adrian Mannarino to reach the Libema Open quarter-finals in Den Bosch on Thursday while in the women's draw third seed Elise Mertens comfortably defeated Maria Sakkari and Bianca Andreescu also advanced. Medvedev earned a straight-sets win over the 2019 winner, but the French lucky loser battled hard before the Russian claimed a 7-6(6) 6-4 victory to kick-start his grass season. Mannarino broke serve in the opening game with Medvedev responding immediately, and the Russian came out on top in the tiebreak after saving two set points. Medvedev made the decisive break in the second set to lead 5-4 and held serve for the win. The pair came into the meeting level at 4-4 in their head-to-head but Medvedev has now won three on the trot against Mannarino and will next meet lucky loser Reilly Opella after the American beat Chile's Nicolas Jarry 7-6(5) 6-3. French second seed Ugo Humbert beat Briton Daniel Evans 7-5 6-3 and in the last eight will face Portuguese seventh seed Nuno Borges, who got a walkover after Finn Otto Virtanen failed to recover from a knee injury picked up during his first-round win. Poland's Hubert Hurkacz also withdrew through injury, sending Estonian qualifier Mark Lajal into the quarter-finals where he will meet Zizou Bergs after the Belgian beat Australian fourth seed Alexei Popyrin 6-7(3) 6-2 7-6(3). Belgium's Mertens had little trouble seeing off Greece's Sakkari 6-3 6-0 and her win versus the former world number three earned her a quarter-final meeting with China's Yuan Yue after the lucky loser's 6-4 6-3 win over Australian Kimberly Birrell. Wildcard Canadian Andreescu eased to a 6-0 6-4 victory against New Zealand's seventh seed Lulu Sun, and last year's losing finalist will meet qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania in the last eight. Ruse had a 6-4 6-3 win over fellow-qualifier Carson Branstine of Canada, who had knocked out defending champion Liudmila Samsonova in the first round. Suzan Lamens of the Netherlands beat American Ann Li 7-6(4) 7-6(5) and will next face Italy's Elisabetta Cocciaretto. Spaun grabs early U.S. Open lead, McIlroy two back

Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images REUTERS OAKMONT, Pennsylvania - J.J. Spaun emerged as the surprise early first-round U.S. Open leader on Thursday at Oakmont Country Club where Rory McIlroy was two shots back, defending champion Bryson DeChambeau opened with a bogey and Scottie Scheffler had yet to start. Spaun, who started on the back nine and completed 11 holes on the notoriously challenging Oakmont layout, was four under on the day without a bogey on his card and sat one shot clear of 2019 U.S. Open champion Gary Woodland (through eight holes). McIlroy reached the turn bogey-free at two under and was part of a five-player group who were in a share of third place while DeChambeau was a further two shots adrift. Much of the talk ahead of the U.S. Open was how Oakmont, with penal rough framing narrow fairways that lead to slick greens, would keep scores in check, and while many players struggled there was more red on the leaderboard than expected. McIlroy picked up his first stroke at his second hole, the par-four 11th, where he walked in a 27-foot birdie moments after getting a good read on the putt from playing partner Justin Rose, who missed his attempt to the left. The Northern Irishman followed that with his longest drive of the season, a monstrous 392-yard strike down the 12th fairway that got a helping hand by a generous bounce en route to a birdie that gave him a share of the early lead. McIlroy followed that with a string of six pars. DeChambeau got his title defence off to a shaky start with a bogey, got back to even par with a birdie at the fifth, moved into red figures with a birdie at the seventh where his approach shot settled six feet from the cup and then bogeyed the ninth. Australian Adam Scott, whose 96th consecutive major start this week is the longest streak among active players, was two under through his first 10 holes and part of the group in a share of third place. Tournament favourite Scottie Scheffler, who counts the PGA Championship among his three wins in his last four starts, will head out at 1:25 p.m. ET alongside two-times major winner Collin Morikawa and world number 14 Viktor Hovland.
