Kerala BJP leader seeks NIA probe against rapper Vedan for ‘disparaging' PM Modi in his songs

Ambedkarite rapper Vedan, who courted controversy with law enforcement and Sangh Parivar organisations, drew the spotlight on Friday (May 23, 2025) after a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader in Kerala sought a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe against the artist.
The complainant, V.S. Minimol, BJP's counsellor in the Palakkad Municipality, told The Hindu that the Hirandas Murali alias Vedan's 'divisive lyrics which lampooned Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a fake patriot' had prompted her to write to the Union Minister of Home Affairs, Amit Shah, seeking an NIA investigation under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention Act).
Mr. Vedan, who had recently risen to levels of stardom arguably unmatched by anyone in the relatively nascent but developing Malayalam poetry and rhythm hip-hop genre, had voiced an oblique critique of those at the apex of the Central government in the song 'Voice of the Voiceless' in 2019.
Ms. Minimol said that Indian society had relegated caste prejudice to the dustbin of history. She accused Mr. Vedan of seeking to promote caste hate at the behest of forces seeking to divide Hindu society.
Mr. Vedan had rocketed quickly to becoming a youth icon by poignantly rapping about the 'subtle but strong undercurrents of skin tone bias and allied casteism in Kerala society', earning accolades from the ruling front and opposition and brickbats from the Sangh Parivar leadership.
The Left Democratic Front (LDF) government had provided stages for Mr. Vedan at its fourth-anniversary celebrations across the State, drawing huge crowds trending towards the young demographic. Leader of the Opposition V D Satheesan and Kerala Pradesh Congress President (KPCC) lauded Mr Vedan's social criticism through music.
In contrast, Mr. Vedan earned the ire of the Sangh Parivar organisations. The BJP-controlled Palakkad municipality demanded the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) department compensate for the public property allegedly damaged by the audience at Mr Vedan's government-sponsored event in Palakkad.
At a Hindu Aikya Vedi meeting in Palakkad, the organisation's chief trustee, P. Sasikala, recently stated that Vedan music was a blot on the rich heritage and folk culture of scheduled caste and scheduled tribe communities in Kerala. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] has demanded the police book Ms Sasikala for making insulting and casteist insinuations against Mr Vedan, who hails from an SC/ST community.
On May 17, the Kolam police indicted the editor of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) mouthpiece, Kesari, N. R. Madhu, for allegedly committing the offence of promoting enmity between different groups and doing acts prejudicial to the maintenance of communal harmony, as specified in Section 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) by 'denigrating' Vedan as a caste terrorist.
The Democratic Youth Federation of India's (DYFI) national president and CPI(M) State committee member, A A Rahim, MP, told the Hindu that the NIA complaint against Mr.Vedan was emblematic of the BJP's intolerance to dissent and opposition to the RSS's revanchist Hindu majoritarian ideology, rooted deeply in the socially abhorrent and outlawed caste system.
'Vedan's massive acceptance in Kerala society, especially among youth, for his critique of society and power has given the regressive BJP and Sangh Parivar sleepless nights. The BJP's threat that it would jail an artist for criticising Modi through his art would not pass muster among the masses', he said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to shift focus to organisational matters, particularly the appointment of its next national president. While the party has made no official announcement yet, sources suggest that internal deliberations are underway and a formal process could begin as early as mid-June. According to sources cited by Live Hindustan, the BJP has completed organisational elections in most states, which are a necessary precondition under the party constitution before electing the next national president. The recent announcement of 70 district presidents in Uttar Pradesh has further fuelled speculation that the central leadership may soon decide on the BJP chief post. However, the process is said to have been briefly delayed in the wake of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu, and Kashmir on April 22. Party sources reportedly indicate that before the national-level appointment, the BJP may first finalise new state unit presidents in key states, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. In Uttar Pradesh, where caste equations are pivotal, a Brahmin face was reportedly being considered earlier. However, a growing demand for an OBC leader has emerged within sections of the party, reported Live Hindustan. This shift could reflect the BJP's broader attempt to consolidate its OBC support base, particularly after recent electoral trends. In Madhya Pradesh, the current leadership structure has an OBC Chief Minister and a Brahmin state president – a balance that has so far worked for the party. However, sources suggest the party is now considering appointing a tribal leader as the state chief, given the relatively low tribal representation in the current state and national leadership. In Uttarakhand, a Brahmin leader is said to be the frontrunner for the state president's post, although no official confirmation has been made. Even as the state-level equations are being finalised, names of potential contenders for the national president's post have started doing the rounds in party circles. Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan, a key OBC leader from Odisha, known for his organisational acumen and proximity to the central leadership is one of the key bigwigs in the race for the party's president post. Shivraj Singh Chouhan has emerged as another top contender. A former Madhya Pradesh chief minister and now a union minister, is seen as a mass leader with grassroots experience. Manohar Lal Khattar, who recently transitioned from his role as Haryana chief minister to the union cabinet, could represent continuity and administrative experience; hence, he is said to be one of the big three names the BJP may choose from. According to sources, the party's final choice is likely to factor in organisational experience, regional representation, and caste balance. The current national president, JP Nadda, has held the post since January 2020. His term was extended to steer the party through the 2024 general elections. With that mandate now fulfilled, leadership transition discussions have gained momentum. A central election committee is expected to be constituted to oversee the election process, which will include nomination filing, scrutiny, and, if necessary, voting. As of now, it is unclear whether Nadda will seek a second full term or the party will opt for a fresh face. Opposition parties , including the Congress and AAP, are said to be following the developments closely. The new chief will be instrumental in framing electoral narratives ahead of crucial state elections in 2026 and the next Lok Sabha polls in 2029.

Hyderabad: Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government is working tirelessly with a vision to create a strong, self-reliant and self-sufficient developed country for future generations. While addressing the media during his visit to the BJP State Headquarters on Friday, the Minister noted that the Modi-3.0 administration will complete one year on June 9. Over the past 11 years, the government has operated with the motto 'Nation First,' aligned with the Viksit Bharat 2047 agenda. He emphasised that India has surpassed Japan and is now the fourth-largest economy in the world. Economists project that India could become the third largest economy, surpassing Germany, with a five trillion USD economy by 2027. Sanjay Seth urged BJP party activists and the public to actively participate in the Viksit Bharat agenda. He pointed out that previously, India was a major importer of defense equipment and had not achieved self-reliance in fulfilling a significant portion of its defense needs through domestic production. However, the country is now exporting defense equipment to around 90 countries. He highlighted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi and Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the Indian defense forces demonstrated their valor during Operation Sindoor, which successfully destroyed nine terrorist hubs inside Pakistan in just 22 minutes. This operation showcases India's military prowess and the preparedness of its forces. Additionally, the Minister mentioned the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' initiative, which involves the mass plantation of saplings across the country. He said that Tiranga Yatras are being organised even in villages, as the local populations wished to express their support for the soldiers guarding the borders thousands of miles away. Earlier, during a meeting with senior leaders of the state party, BJP National Vice-President and Mahbubnagar MP DK Aruna honored Sanjay Seth for his contributions.

PM Modi says he will attend G7 summit in Canada
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday that he will attend the upcoming meeting of the Group of Seven, or G7, countries, following an invitation from his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, who is hosting the summit. The G7 summit, which brings together the heads of France, Britain, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States, is being held this year in Kananaskis in the Canadian province of Alberta from June 15 to 17. 'As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests,' Modi said in a post on X. On Tuesday, the Congress criticised the Narendra Modi-led government, claiming that India not being invited to the G7 summit was yet another ' major diplomatic bungle '. Party leader Jairam Ramesh said that Indian prime ministers had regularly attended the summit. 'Before 2014, G7 was actually G8 for many years and had included Russia,' Ramesh said in a social media post. 'Dr Manmohan Singh would be invited for G8 Summits where his voice would be heard.' He added: 'For the first time in six years, 'Vishwaguru' will not be in attendance at the Canada summi. Whatever spin may be given, the fact remains that this is yet another big diplomatic bungle.' Ties between India and Canada have been strained since September 2023, when Canada's former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told his country's parliament that Canadian intelligence agencies were actively pursuing 'credible allegations' tying agents of the Indian government to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar near Vancouver. Nijjar was a supporter of Khalistan, an independent Sikh nation sought by some groups. He was the head of the Khalistan Tiger Force, which is designated a terrorist outfit in India. India rejected Trudeau's allegations as 'absurd and motivated'. After extending an invitation to Modi, Carney was facing criticism in his country, The Guardian reported. Carney has, however, defended the move, saying it was important to invite the Indian prime minister, considering the country was the 'fifth largest economy in the world, the most populous country in the world and central to supply chains'. Carney was elected as the country's prime minister in March, when he replaced Trudeau, who said in January that he would resign as the leader of the party and therefore as the prime minister. During his poll campaign, earlier this year, Carney had said that his government would look to diversify Canada's trading relationships with 'like-minded countries' and that 'there are opportunities to rebuild the relationship with India'.
