Watch: Montreal fans boo U.S. anthem before 4 Nations face-off

Express Tribune16-02-2025

Fans in Montreal loudly booed the U.S. national anthem before the 4 Nations Face-Off game between the United States and Canada on Saturday, marking the second time in the tournament that "The Star-Spangled Banner" was met with jeers.
Despite public address announcer Michel Lacroix urging fans to respect the anthems, the crowd at Bell Centre reacted with sustained boos as warrant officer David Grenon of the Royal Canadian Air Force Band performed the song.
U.S. defenseman Zach Werenski acknowledged the hostility but said it served as motivation in the team's 3-1 victory over Canada.
"We knew it was going to happen," he said. "We obviously don't like it."
Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck dismissed the reaction, saying he focused on the game. "You have free speech," he said. "If you're going to boo the anthem, we sing it for the troops that protected our freedom."
The game's intensity was evident early, with Matthew Tkachuk and Brandon Hagel dropping the gloves off the opening faceoff, sparking a series of fights within nine seconds.
Forward Jake Guentzel, who scored twice, described the atmosphere as "unbelievable."
Anthem booing has occurred at past NHL and NBA games in Canada, often linked to political tensions. Veteran defenseman Drew Doughty, however, discouraged the practice. "I think we should respect the anthems," he said.

Social media reacts to Betsy Wolfe's national anthem ahead of Brewers vs Yankees

The New York Yankees began their 2025 campaign with a 4-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at Yankee Stadium on Thursday, but the game was marked by a national anthem controversy and late-inning drama. Broadway actress Betsy Wolfe performed 'The Star-Spangled Banner' before the first pitch, but fans quickly noticed she was reading the lyrics from her phone. Social media reactions were mixed, with some criticising her for relying on a screen, while others praised her vocal performance. Anybody that has to read the lyrics off their phone shouldn't be allowed to sing. Especially since it's the Star Spangled Banner — grimace (@heyyitsgrimace) March 27, 2025 Betsy Wolfe: another fine example of our "wonderful" education system. 😂😂 — Lisa Raymond (@LisaRaymondAZ) March 28, 2025 Many users were especially critical of New York Yankees, wondering why such a huge organization couldn't afford to hrie someone else. Wow! How Embarrassing Singing of National Anthem for Opening Day at Yankee Stadium. And she also Needed her Cell Phone to Remember the Words. Really! Is this the Best You Could Get/Afford for Opening Day? @Yankees — Ed (@fasteddie516) March 27, 2025 Yankees opening day didn't go as planned for fans, who expressed their dissatisfaction with the national anthem performance by Broadway actress Betsy Wolfe. The team sought to secure a victory over the Brewers, but frustrations lingered from the pre-game experience. — Neo🔥 (@neoupdate_) March 28, 2025 Once the game began, Yankees catcher Austin Wells provided an early highlight, launching a solo home run in the first inning. The blast made him the first catcher in MLB history to hit a leadoff homer on Opening Day. New York held a 4-1 lead heading into the ninth, but new closer Devin Williams faced immediate trouble. He allowed a single to Joey Ortiz and a double to Isaac Collins, conceding a run before striking out Jackson Chourio and Christian Yelich to secure the win. The Yankees and Brewers will meet again on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. ET.

The four-time NBA champion shared a clip of Smith training, paired with fourteen laughing emojis and the caption: 'WHOMP WHOMP WHOMPPPPPPPP.' The video quickly gained over 500,000 likes within an hour. The online spat is the latest chapter in an ongoing feud between the NBA star and the outspoken analyst. Their tension escalated after James accused Smith of crossing the line with personal commentary. In response, Smith claimed that had things turned physical, he wouldn't have backed down. 'I would've gotten my a** kicked… but I would have immediately swung on him,' he said. James addressed the issue during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, saying the analyst missed the point entirely. 'I'd never stop people from criticizing on-court play—that's part of your job,' he said. 'But when it gets personal, it's my job to protect my household and team.' Amid the drama, James also made headlines on the court with a buzzer-beating tip-in that sealed the Los Angeles Lakers' thrilling 120-119 win over the Indiana Pacers. He scored 13 points, but it was the final play that sent fans into a frenzy. With both James and Smith continuing to speak out, the feud remains one of the most talked-about stories in sports media. Fans are now watching closely to see how—or if—it escalates further.

Avalanche acquire Islanders' Brock Nelson in major NHL trade

The Colorado Avalanche have acquired veteran center Brock Nelson from the New York Islanders in a major deal ahead of Friday's NHL trade deadline, securing one of the most coveted players available. The trade sends Nelson and forward William Dufour to Colorado in exchange for defenseman Oliver Kylington, forward Calum Ritchie, a first-round draft pick in 2026 or 2027, and a conditional third-round pick in 2028. The Islanders then moved Kylington to the Anaheim Ducks for future considerations. Nelson, 33, has spent his entire 12-year NHL career with the Islanders since being drafted 30th overall in 2010. A key piece for Team USA at the 4 Nations Face-Off, Nelson is widely regarded as a top two-way center. He has scored over 30 goals in each of the past three seasons and remains a strong presence on both the power play and penalty kill. In 61 games this season, Nelson has recorded 20 goals and 23 assists. He and the Islanders discussed a new contract leading up to the deadline but were unable to reach an agreement. Multiple teams, including the Winnipeg Jets and Minnesota Wild, were linked to Nelson before Colorado finalized the deal. The Avalanche have sought a reliable No. 2 center since Nazem Kadri's departure following their 2022 Stanley Cup win. Nelson's addition provides Colorado with needed depth behind Nathan MacKinnon as the team prepares for a deep postseason run. Dufour, 23, has spent this season with the Bridgeport Islanders (AHL), tallying 18 points in 45 games. Ritchie, 20, was drafted 27th overall by Colorado in 2023 and has played seven NHL games this season, scoring once. The trade's draft picks come with conditions. If Colorado's 2026 first-round pick is unavailable due to a prior deal with Philadelphia, or if it lands in the top 10, New York will instead receive Colorado's 2027 first-rounder. The conditional third-round pick in 2028 will be triggered if the Avalanche win the 2025 Stanley Cup and Nelson plays in at least half of their playoff games. This marks Colorado's second major trade of the deadline period after acquiring defenseman Ryan Lindgren from the New York Rangers earlier in the week. For the Islanders, Nelson's departure could signal more moves ahead of the deadline, with veteran forward Kyle Palmieri on an expiring contract and Jean-Gabriel Pageau also drawing trade speculation.
