Avalanche acquire Islanders' Brock Nelson in major NHL trade

Express Tribune07-03-2025

The Colorado Avalanche have acquired veteran center Brock Nelson from the New York Islanders in a major deal ahead of Friday's NHL trade deadline, securing one of the most coveted players available.
The trade sends Nelson and forward William Dufour to Colorado in exchange for defenseman Oliver Kylington, forward Calum Ritchie, a first-round draft pick in 2026 or 2027, and a conditional third-round pick in 2028. The Islanders then moved Kylington to the Anaheim Ducks for future considerations.
Nelson, 33, has spent his entire 12-year NHL career with the Islanders since being drafted 30th overall in 2010. A key piece for Team USA at the 4 Nations Face-Off, Nelson is widely regarded as a top two-way center. He has scored over 30 goals in each of the past three seasons and remains a strong presence on both the power play and penalty kill.
In 61 games this season, Nelson has recorded 20 goals and 23 assists. He and the Islanders discussed a new contract leading up to the deadline but were unable to reach an agreement. Multiple teams, including the Winnipeg Jets and Minnesota Wild, were linked to Nelson before Colorado finalized the deal.
The Avalanche have sought a reliable No. 2 center since Nazem Kadri's departure following their 2022 Stanley Cup win. Nelson's addition provides Colorado with needed depth behind Nathan MacKinnon as the team prepares for a deep postseason run.
Dufour, 23, has spent this season with the Bridgeport Islanders (AHL), tallying 18 points in 45 games. Ritchie, 20, was drafted 27th overall by Colorado in 2023 and has played seven NHL games this season, scoring once.
The trade's draft picks come with conditions. If Colorado's 2026 first-round pick is unavailable due to a prior deal with Philadelphia, or if it lands in the top 10, New York will instead receive Colorado's 2027 first-rounder. The conditional third-round pick in 2028 will be triggered if the Avalanche win the 2025 Stanley Cup and Nelson plays in at least half of their playoff games.
This marks Colorado's second major trade of the deadline period after acquiring defenseman Ryan Lindgren from the New York Rangers earlier in the week.
For the Islanders, Nelson's departure could signal more moves ahead of the deadline, with veteran forward Kyle Palmieri on an expiring contract and Jean-Gabriel Pageau also drawing trade speculation.

However, the evening wasn't without controversy. Fans quickly took to social media to criticise Swift for sitting next to hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, who is a known supporter of Donald Trump. Many expressed disappointment, with some questioning her choice of company given the political ties. Gretzky's association with Trump has sparked backlash in both the US and Canada. Despite the controversy, Swift and Kelce seemed to enjoy the game, with Swift remaining unfazed by the criticism surrounding her seating choice.

Panthers vs Oilers 3-4: Florida has unusual collapse as Edmonton take lead in Game 1 of NHL playoffs

The Florida Panthers, who had been nearly flawless in the playoffs under coach Paul Maurice, suffered a rare collapse in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Edmonton Oilers. The Panthers, who had been dominant when leading after one or two periods, let a 3-2 lead slip away, ultimately falling 4-3 in overtime on Wednesday night. Florida, defending their Stanley Cup title, had been unbeaten in 31 consecutive playoff games when holding a lead at the intermission break. But the Panthers' strategy of playing conservatively backfired as the Oilers stormed back with three unanswered goals, including a dramatic overtime winner by Leon Draisaitl. Draisaitl sealed the victory with a power-play goal, finishing off a centering pass from Connor McDavid at 19:29 of overtime, moments after Tomas Nosek was penalised for delay of game. 'We've been really good all year at not sitting back with the lead, and for whatever reason we sat back tonight,' said Sam Bennett, who had scored twice, including a franchise-record 12th postseason goal. Despite the Panthers' early control of the game, they were outshot 24-8 in the final period and overtime, and Maurice pointed to a lack of competition on key plays. 'I think we had some real good pressure. They get it back and then there were some plays we didn't compete,' Maurice said. 'I thought we were a little safe with the puck.' They are now 8-3 on the road this postseason and will need to regroup ahead of Game 2 in Edmonton on Friday night.

Tigers vs Rockies 8-6: Detroit extend strong start to MLB season

The Detroit Tigers extended their strong start to the 2025 season with a commanding victory over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night. Backed by a relentless offence and another sharp outing from Jackson Jobe, the Tigers cruised to a comfortable win in the first game of the series at Coors Field. The final score underscored Detroit's recent dominance and Colorado's continued woes in a difficult season. Detroit entered the game riding a 22-13 record and high on confidence, having won four of their previous five games — including a 13-1 blowout over the Angels. Their offence, averaging 5.1 runs per game and powered by a team OPS of .755, struck early. Spencer Torkelson got the scoring started in the first inning, and Kerry Carpenter — who came into the game hitting .355 over his last 10 appearances — added to the lead with an RBI single. By the third inning, the Tigers had established a commanding advantage, while the Rockies struggled to generate offence. Despite a few flashes from Hunter Goodman and Brenton Doyle, Colorado failed to convert opportunities, continuing a season-long trend that sees them ranked last in the league in OPS (.620) and runs per game (3.12). The game was also significant, as it marked Tigers' head coach A.J. Hinch's 900th managerial victory. On the mound, rookie Chase Dollander faced a difficult task and couldn't hold back Detroit's hot bats. Though he had shown promise in his last outing against Atlanta, inconsistency returned as he gave up multiple runs early and never recovered. Jobe, meanwhile, delivered another solid start for Detroit. The right-hander limited Colorado's chances, showcasing the poise that's defined his season so far. With support from a disciplined defence and a potent offence, the Tigers were in control throughout. Torkelson later added a solo homer, further cementing the result and lifting his season tally. Detroit's complete performance — at the plate, on the mound, and in the field — left little doubt about their status as a rising force in the league. As the final innings closed, the Rockies were left searching for solutions to a 6-28 record that has them rooted to the bottom of the standings. With the series set to continue, Casey Mize is expected to start the next game for Detroit as Colorado looks to salvage a result and find some momentum.
